Bertrand Bachelet created this domaine in 2011 after taking over from his father, Jean-Louis. Since then, Bertrand has been a busy bee, acquiring more hectares, planting more vines and building himself a smart new cuverie on the edge of the village of Dezize-lès-Maranges.
He is a very engaging, hard-working young man with a real passion for what he does. Bertrand currently farms around 13 hectares but it easy to believe that that number may increase over the coming years. He has a strong position in Maranges, but he has also recently increased his presence in St Aubin and Chassagne, with several new plantings of Chardonnay in the former. In terms of vinification, Bertrand works fairly traditionally. All the Pinot is fully destemmed, he still does a little pigeage, although less than he used to, and the wines generally receive around 25% new oak, though Bertrand is playing around with larger barrels for certain cuvées, where he wants the oak influence to be minimal.

Domaine Ballot-Millot can trace its roots back in Burgundy almost 400 years and, officially, Charles is the 15th generation of his family to take up the mantle of vigneron. He took over from his father Philippe Ballot at the start of the new Millenium, though his father was still quite youthful at that time. But it was clear even then that Charles was destined to do something special at the domaine so why delay?

Twenty years on and Charles has firmly established himself as one of the top names of Meursault. He has around 10 hectares of which about 20% are red. He also has a good smattering of old vines. The wines spend 12 months in barrel and then a further 4-6 months in steel so that they get a second winter in the cellar. He is quite sparing with new oak, generally keeping to 15/20%. He likes to work with lees to keep his wines in a slightly reductive state during élevage.

Known locally as a source of exceptional Meursault, Domaine Buisson-Battault remained an insider’s secret for a long time, with little international renown. This may have been partly due a strong local demand combined with their decision to release their wines late (after the main en primeur season was finished).

It is rather extraordinary to think that in the last 78 years, the domaine has only had two winemakers and yet it has seen much change during that period. Today the domaine is run by François Buisson. François’ grandfather was responsible for planting many of the old vines that this domaine is famed for, and his father André Buisson (who had been winemaker since 1945) had been responsible for the direction of vinification, quietly assisted by François from 1985 to 2003. The winemaking is traditional with up to 20% new oak, no battonage and extended lees ageing.

We are kicking off our countdown to the 2022 Burgundy En Primeur tasting with exclusive pictures and interviews of our Burgundian winemakers!

First up, Stéphane Magnien of Domaine Stéphane Magnien.

Located in Morey-St-Denis, this fourth-generation-run domaine boasts twelve appellations, including top grands crus Clos Saint-Denis and Charmes-Chambertin, despite being a small domaine of only 4.5 hectares. Since taking over in 2008, Stéphane's commitment to minimal oak and light extraction has resulted in expressive and complex wines with finesse.

It's finally that time of the year people have been waiting for with much anticipation: Roagna's new releases. The vintage in focus is 2018. It’s one that Luca Roagna describes as ‘elegant, pure and approachable’ and ‘classic’, thanks to the wines’ potential for ageing. They are typically mid-weight and, in many cases, disarmingly expressive even now, but with a presence, persistence and sense of place that is simply beguiling.

A little throwback to last year's visit at Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm to announce the new 2022 releases!

"Lush yet energetic, the 2022s from J.J Prüm is a vintage to enjoy rather than enshrine, but this being Riesling from the Mosel, the wines can be cellared with confidence for a couple of decades at least."

NEW RELEASES FROM PIERRE-JEAN VILLA

Pierre-Jean Villa’s luminous, mineral reds and textured yet energetic whites are among the highlights of Stannary’s Rhône portfolio. His range takes in Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage and Condrieu as well as Côte Rôtie, where P-J is one of a handful of vignerons to have acquired vines since this tiny (224 hectares) appellation’s reputation went stratospheric in the 1990s. He also produces two superb wines from prime parcels in the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes.

Our offer features new releases from 2022 and 2021. Volumes of the 2021s in particular are strictly limited, so please register your interest as soon as possible. All the wines in the offer will ship in the coming weeks, landing in the UK by December 2023. Discover the offer through the link in bio.

“In cricket, top batsmen often refer to that moment in their careers when everything comes together as being ‘in the zone’. They see the ball as big as a football and everything is effortless and instinctive. It genuinely feels like Arnaud Mortet is at that stage in his winemaking journey. Meeting him at his cellars, he arrives in good humour and with a warm smile, clearly delighted to showcase his 2021s. His bright disposition contrasts sharply with one or two vignerons, who seemed to have succumbed, quite understandably, to the stress of this frost-ravaged vintage. If one judges a winemaker by his ability to fashion great wines in challenging circumstances then Arnaud can take a long, well-deserved bow.” –Jason Haynes, Burgundy Buyer.

We are delighted to announce the 2021 En Primeur Release of Domaine Denis Mortet. Find out more via the link in bio.

Domaine de Montille’s chef de cave Brian Sieve was born in the US, but at age 30 he had already traveled the world. He more or less tried his hand at everything: working as ski patrol at a Colorado resort, fly-fishing guide, harvester and vineyard worker in Sonoma and studying oenology. Passionate about terroir, Brian finally settled in Volnay. After working for Domaine de Montille for a year, he became chef de cave in January 2010.

Tasting with Brian Sieve, Chef de Cave at Domaine de Montille, is always a masterclass in terroir. Originally from Indianapolis, he travelled the world before settling in Volnay where he was drawn to ‘the land of terroir’. Brian has an uncanny ability to combine a classic expression of Burgundy with a modern flexible approach, but always in harmony with nature.

In antithesis to last year's frosts and hailstorms, the 2022 vintage has seen heatwaves and early harvests. Now that the vendange is done, we look back at the 2022 harvest from some of our Burgundy producers. The region mostly escaped the hottest weather this year and the nights remained surprisingly fresh, producing excellent yields in both quality and quantity.

1. No wonder Pierre and Marianne Duroche are beaming in front of their vats at Domaine Duroche in Gevrey-Chambertin. When asked if he was happy with the vintage, Pierre replied, ‘very, very, very happy!’
2. A very calm sorting table at Domaine Hudelot Noellat in Vougeot
3. Charles Van Canneyt of Domaine Hudelot Noellat in Vougeot looking very relaxed and happy as his grapes come in. Not much to be done on the sorting table this year!
4. Amelie Berthaut at Domaine Berthaut Gerbet in Fixin is busy loading the boxes of grapes onto the sorting table. 2022 ,despite some hail in June, is the most bountiful vintage since 2017 and 2018
5. Romain Taupenot and son Louis very much giving the ‘thumbs up’ to the exciting 2022 vintage as they complete the last few days of harvesting
6. Gorgeous looking grapes coming in from Les St Georges at Domaine Henri Gouges in Nuits St Georges
7. A tractor being loaded with full boxes of grapes at Domaine Henri Gouges in Nuits St Georges

We are deeply saddened to hear of Daniel Vollenweider’s passing over the weekend. Daniel was born in Switzerland with no familial ties to the Mosel, or indeed to winemaking. The story goes… he tried a bottle of 1990 Egon Muller and on the spot was convinced that there was no place better than the Mosel. Not knowing a single person, he shortly moved and bought a 1 hectare plot in the Wolfer Goldrube. Word soon got out of this Swiss making explosive, rich and mineral Mosel Riesling and the wines have just grown and grown from there. Thankfully Moritz Hoffman, co-owner of the estate, will continue the good work of this winemaking maestro.

Our first peek at 2021 Burgundy sees the release of perennial over-achiever, Domaine Olivier Leflaive. 2021 saw devastating frosts (more widespread than 2016) but the individual attention the vigneron paid to the few remaining vines has paid off and tasting in situ last week confirmed this, a small but mighty vintage. DM for a copy.

Day 1 of celebrates these two young bucks at Merkelbach. Our favourite octogenarian brothers, Alfred and Rolf, are firm believers in traditional winemaking and champion a hands - off approach at their tiny 1 hectare estate. Many of their vines on the steep slopes of Urziger Wurzgarten and Kinheimer Rosenberg are ungrafted and they are making incredibly pure, focussed Riesling. 😍

And that’s a wrap! 2018 White Burgfest is complete with the very best of the industry sampling the vintage. In the words of Jason Haynes, our Burgundy buyer and Director: “The end of a fascinating and unique 4 days of blind tasting, when we revisited 1er and Grand Cru whites from the bountiful 2018 vintage. Over 200 wines tasted, dissected and scored. The best wines were very good indeed and the likes of Ballot - Millot and Olivier Leflaive really shone. More detailed results to follow.”
