Thorne & Daughters Paper Kite Semillon Blanc Swartland 2021🍷

John and Tasha (+ daughters!) are at the forefront of the new wave of South African winemakers and their ethos is about bring the sunshine of the Western Cape into their wines so that you are transported when you drink it.

This Semillon is from 60-year-old vines that produce a wine of real intensity. There’s quince, blackcurrant leaf, black tea, green fig and a touch of honey all held together with racy acidity. An absolutely intriguing wine, and one not made in huge quantities so check it out soon!

Mullineux Old Vine White Swartland 2022 🍷

This absolute banger of a wine from Mullineux is absolute proof that a natural ferment/low intervention white can be both fulsome and utterly elegant. Based on 73% Chenin Blanc (a grape South Africa has made its own to such an extent it rather eclipses chenins from the Loire), it’s heady with peaches and nectarines, but bright with a racy acidity to balance out the full body and richness. Swoonsome stuff.

What I love most about Ataraxia is that winemaker Kevin Grant has an approach to wine-making that is both minimalist and non-interventionist. Through this, he reflects a sense of place and expression of his terroir.

He barrel-ferments his wine completely and through this his chardonnay shows itself to be old-world in style, whilst balancing subtlety and intensity. The flavours displayed in this fantastic chardonnay include tropical fruits, peach, and vanilla. These reasons show why it is a firm staff favourite here at Philglas & Swiggot!

Philglas & Swiggot was founded in 1991 on Northcote Road in Battersea by Mike and Karen Rogers and subsequently expanded to add further stores and became one of London's most loved independent wine merchants. With an exceptional range and notable strength in Italy, France, South Africa, Australia and California the company now supplies a wide range of private, corporate and wholesale customers and operates two stores & a newly launched Enoteca in Marylebone. In November 2018, O’Briens Wine purchased the business to begin a new chapter in its history. Founded as a family business in the 1940s and specialising in wine, beer and spirits since 1973, O’Briens has grown to 34 stores across the Republic of Ireland as well as 2 stores now in London (Battersea and Marylebone). With ambitious plans and a highly experienced management and buying team in place including two Masters of Wine to oversee the wine range, Philglas & Swiggot continue to operate at the forefront of the UK Fine Wine market, offering expert advice and exceptional levels of service.
