Our Wine of the Week this week is a delightful NZ Sauvignon Blanc from Kim Crawford.

Many NZ Sauvignon Blancs have become too intense for some palates so this Kim Crawford is a model picture of moderation...

We love it's fresh acidity but equally delight in the fact that it is not too pungent.

Etienne Guigal Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2019

This week’s Wine of the Week is from Etienne Guigal, an illustrious producer in the Rhone. This is a gorgeously complex but refreshing white wine. Spectacularly underated in our opinion and unusually versatile with or without food and in all seasons.

For those who feel the need to know, the blend is: 60% Viognier, 15% Roussanne, 10% Marsanne, 8 % Clairette, 5% Bourboulenc, 2% Grenache blanc

Ségla 2015 - 2nd Wine of Château Rauzan Ségla

It looks like we are starting to get a glimpse of the summer days ahead but that doesn't mean you have to pack away the reds until the first sign of Autumn!

With the Rauzan Ségla 2015, 'Grand Vin' nudging £100 per bottle, we love the Ségla 2015 at about 1/3 of the price. This red is a firm favourite here at Lunzer Wine and always receives great feedback at tastings. As one of our most ordered wines we are happy to list 6 and 12 bottle cases in our shop.

We still have a while to wait for the warm summer days but the springtime sunshine is a perfect reason to stock up on some fabulous AIX Rosé magnums.

Drawn from one of the Provence’s most celebrated terroirs, AIX is created to be the purest possible expression of what a rosé wine can be.

AIX Rosé themselves say that their wine is "made for those who know how to appreciate wine. And for those who know how to appreciate life." We couldn't agree more!

We have tasted the 2021 which is another stunner but will probably benefit from a few more months in bottle.

We have a fantastic Port that we are showcasing this week as our Wine Of The Week ..

Fonseca 1985 Vintage Port

"A real ‘wow’ of a wine that promises to last a lifetime. 96 points”
Recently tasted in London and there is no doubt that this Port is a classic, still showing great character as it heads towards it's 37th birthday...

Fonseca has always been a favourite of mine and this is what the critics say about this particular vintage... "This port is a deep inky ruby with a broad red rim. Generous and seductive nose redolent of blackcurrant, cherry and ground coffee. The full round palate is supposed by thick well integrated tannins and delivers an abundance of luscious chocolate and blackcurrant flavour which lingers into the long velvety finish. A wine still poised between youth and maturity".

We have cases of Fonseca 1985 available for delivery from the first week of May and whilst the Summer is not really the season for Vintage Port, it is worth securing this vintage now for the next few Christmases, before it runs out...

Easter Lamb - Pinot Noir - California or Burgundy?

The Easter weekend is just around the corner and aside from the chocolate, we are planning ahead for the Easter roast.

We have a preference for a Pinot Noir to accompany our Easter lamb and we can highly recommend a couple of fabulous wines from Burgundy that step up to the challenge!

As a contrast we have also chosen two delicious Pinot Noirs from California and it might be fun to serve both to see which you prefer...

Wine of the Week

The wine we are showcasing this week is the 2018, Prats & Symington Post Scriptum Douro from Portugal.

This is the sort of Second Wine of Chryseia - a Douro red wine made by the collaboration between Bruno Prats of Ch Cos d’Estournel and the Symington Family who own among other port houses, Dow’s, Graham’s & Warre’s.

This wine is full of character and a genuine treat in restraint from a warm (!) climate capable of making rich reds with power but also balance.

The average scores from 5 renowned critics for this wine is 90/100.

Lunzer Wine Shop is delighted to announce the arrival of of the new 2014 Bollinger La Grande Année and we have a limited supply available for our customers from today.

La Grande Année is the embodiment of the carefully preserved traditional expertise of the Bollinger Champagne House. The wine is therefore exclusively vinified in small, aged oak barrels. Champagne Bollinger has never abandoned this traditional m**hod, which results in aromas of great finesse. After 7.5 years ageing on its lees (more than twice the requisite) every bottle of La Grande Année is riddled and disgorged by hand.

At Bollinger, only the very best harvests become a vintage: the 2014 vintage gave rise to a truly formidable wine which they describe as "simultaneously structured, rich and complex, in terms of both its minerality and exceptional intensity".

The 2014 is a blend taken from 19 villages, 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay instead of the more typical 70/30 mix. For the second time in two decades (the first was 2007), Verzenay takes the lead in the Pinots over Aÿ, more or less an inverse from the norm. Verzenay, a north-facing village in the Montagne de Reims that saw less rain than Aÿ and most of the Vallée de la Marne, yields Pinots of energy more than volume. That, married with Chardonnays mostly from the Côtes des Blancs (predominantly Chouilly, Vertus, Oiry and Cramant), results in a truly magical Grande Année that will delight Champagne fans for several decades. I can’t recommend the 2014 highly enough. It’s a total knock-out. Disgorged: April, 2021. Dosage: 8 grams per liter. Drink: 2024-2044

Having Dinner for Two at Home?

For this week’s Wines of the Week, we have put together a selection of half bottles of wines and a port that are a perfect combination for dinner for two at home.

Starting with Piper Heidsieck to kick off the evening and followed by a wonderful Riesling and a very highly regarded Chianti, all you need to decide is the menu. You could finish off with a cheese board and the 10 year old Tawny Port. (we drink it slightly chilled)

Our new wine of the week ..

Bruno Colin Bourgogne Chardonnay

It is almost always rewarding to find the humblest wines made by top producers since their significant skills become available at a fraction of the price of their more famous offerings. Bruno's Chassagne Montrachets are a healthy £85+ per bottle making this wine more than acceptable at less than £20.

Bruno Colin Bourgogne Chardonnay is a buttery and complex white wine that has spent ten month ageing in oak barrels (up to 20% new!).

Château Tronquoy-Lalande 2016

Saint Estephe is on a roll here with the same wine making team as Château Montrose! Sometimes it really is worth seeking out the best Bordeaux, Cru Bourgeois!

This 2016 Château Tronquoy-Lalande has been served at a few of our recent online events. It undoubtedly needs some time to mature but wow! .... Heaps of fruit to mask some sturdy tannins and balanced acidity. I think I may keep mine a while before tapping into it but if tempted before then, a couple of hours in a decanter will work wonders...
