Washington State brought us Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, Seattle Grunge artist Chris Cornell, Jimi Hendrix, Twin Peaks, Twilight, Fraser and Bill Gates. Today it is bringing us super-fine, top level, financially accessible wine. Second only to California in output, Washington State is nurturing seriously solid wine making talent thanks to an insane terroir, ungrafted vines, long sunny days and lower land prices. Young idealists and wine icons alike come to make the wine they always wanted to make but couldn’t for various reasons. Freedom and foresight are evident in these wines. Washington State offers a fresh perspective on most things and wine is no exception.

CHÂTEAU MONCETS 2017
MONCETS-CHAMBRUN

Aged for 16 months in French oak, and grown on vines that are on average 40 years old, this delightful 2017 from the producers at Moncets-Chambrun is a delicate but thoroughly enjoyable wine.

Subtles aromas of plums and white flowers. A fresh finish, delightful to drink! A blend of 86% Merlot & 14% Cabernet Franc, aged for 16 months in french oak barrels. Created in 1770, the Château Moncets estate is this winery's oldest vineyard and bears the name of the Général de Moncets, who bought it in 1872. Pairs perfectly with grilled red meats. Age for 7-10 years.

ADELAIDE HILLS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2020 SHAW AND SMITH

Shaw & Smith are the torchbearer for quality wines from Adelaide Hills. Sustainable farming is their core principle, adopting organic and biodynamic practices to ensure the best soil and vine health. Due to the altitude of this region, the wines have a distinctive freshness to them. This Sauvignon is vibrant and mineral, a great match for seafood!

Incredibly fragrant, with lots of bold gooseberry and guava fruit. Bursting with zingy lime and grapefruit, refreshing mouthfeel. Light seafood dishes would work wonderfully - salmon tataki, scallop ceviche or crispy prawn tacos with tangy slaw.

From This Week’s Picks - Sta Rita Hills Chardonnay 2018 Sandhi Wines

This vibrant, balanced, superior Chardonnay is a great example of quality wine from the Santa Rita Hills AVA. Blended from various vineyards where a cool breeze from the nearby ocean helps to develop complexity and flavour.

Exceptional nose of lemon rind, butterscotch and stone fruit. Perfectly balanced palate, flinty minerality, and complex citrus fruits. Drink now and over the next 4-6 years. Serve with BBQ lemon chicken, or roasted leek and asparagus tarte.

Malbec is an inky black-blue grape variety native to Cahors in South West France, now better known as the iconic wine grape of Argentina. Through its success in the vineyards of Mendoza in particular, in a few short decades Malbec has shot from relative obscurity to international fame. At the same time, it brought Argentina into the global spotlight as a wine-producing nation.

Malbec flavours
Broadly speaking, French Malbec tends to be more meaty, rustic and tannic. Examples from Argentina seem to run from bright and fresh through to the more established export style; rich, ripe, jammy and juicy. Generalising further, fruit aromas tend somewhat towards the plummy character of Merlot, rather than the blackcurrant of Cabernet Sauvignon. Fresher lighter examples can tend more towards red fruits. However it can be Malbec's inky colour intensity which provides the clearest differentiation.
On both sides of the Atlantic, Malbec wines are generally aged in oak to enhance the wine's structure and ageing potential. This can give the wines a pronounced chocolate character.

Food pairings for Malbec
This can vary greatly according to the style of the wine. Lighter juicier styles of Argentine Malbec are useful alrounders, while the riper heavier ones suit steaks and bolder dishes. Because of the dark fruit, coffee and chocolate characters of the more oaked examples, they can match well with chocolate. Even desserts such as tiramisu can work reasonably well if only opening one bottle at dinner.
The traditional, tannic Cahors Black Wine will be softened by protein-rich meats, cheeses and nut-based dishes. It is a less obvious pairing for chargrilled food, as the more assertive tannins will double up on the astringency from the charring.

In a very short time, Chateau d'Esclans has become one of the benchmark estates of Provence, producing some of the most compelling, but light, pale and delicate rosé wines of the region.

While an old estate, with cellars dating back to the 12th century, it was the arrival in 2006 of Sacha Lichine, scion of the great wine-making family of Bordeaux, that saw d'Esclans elevated to its present level of fame and prestige.

Patrick Javillier is a perfectionist. He vinifies parcel by parcel giving the wine its concentration and richness.

Raspberry and vanilla go hand-in-hand on the nose. Supple, fresh, this wine is discreet and accessible in its youth.
Les Grands Liards is located at the foot of the hillside with a clay and limestone soil rich in pebbles.

Broc Cellars Fox Hill Vineyard Nero d'Avola 2019🍷

⭐Broc's Nero d'Avola is layered with dark red fruits and displays soft approachable tannins. 20% of the grapes are aged, skin on, in amphora before being basket pressed in to neutral French oak.

⭐Intervention is minimal, fermentation is spontaneous and no SO2 is used. This is a rare expression of West Coast Nero d'Avola but like most of Broc's projects is a great success, unique, experimental and totally delicious!
