Autumn is upon us, and there's nothing quite like a spicy Rhône red to pair with the season's golden hues and crisp evenings. We were over the moon to see Domaine François Merlin, one of our favourite producers, lauded in a recent Decanter article – and with soaring scores to match!

Spanning an impressive 141,846 acres, this new wine growing boundary has recently earned distinction as its own American Viticultural Area (AVA). An absolute pleasure to host Alex Milner of in our Roberson HQ.

The buzz around Alex’s wines is inescapable. From cult status Chenin, to a range of incredibly nuanced Cinsault, his masterful Cape creations have taken the wine world by storm.

Milner's winemaking philosophy is distinctive: "In essence," he declares with a grin, "it’s about taking chances and having fun!" By nurturing the forgotten patches of old dryland bush vine, his approach fosters a deep bond between the vineyard and the bottle, emphasising minimal intervention in both the winery and the vines.

Here at Roberson, we're BIG on Californian wines - so much so, we've bagged Decanter's ‘USA Specialist of the Year’ award seven times. We make the transatlantic journey at least once a year, eager to check in with the winemakers we admire, scout for new talent, and keep our finger on the pulse of the trends shaping this dynamic wine scene.

Our sizeable portfolio meant this year's trip was no leisurely tour, but a whirlwind adventure that clocked some serious miles. Under Keith's experienced guidance, we navigated from the sun-drenched slopes of Santa Barbara to the rugged landscapes of Napa's Atlas Peak. We braved ocean fog and heat spikes, armed with a car radio blasting classic rock and a generous stash of Cheetos. But this wasn't just a road trip; it was a classic Roberson-style twist on the conventional, and an unforgettable journey into the heart of California's exciting wine revolution. Different Soil, Different Charm 🌱

While the main Chablis vineyards grow on sheltered Kimmeridgian limestone slopes, Petit Chablis takes the higher ground on the hilltops composed of younger Oxfordian limestone. Both soils bring their own special touch to the wine. These appellation boundaries were drawn generations ago - today, largely due to climate change, the best of the higher elevation Petit Chablis vineyards are producing better quality fruit than their more reputed neighbours lower down the hills.
