We just added some new wine words to our glossary. Is ‘spontaneous fermentation’ just fermentation that makes elaborate last-minute plans? What does ‘V.A.’ stand for? And also, what is in those adorable, stout little bottles? (It’s Vin Jaune.)

Head to our Wine Journal for some fresh definitions.

While Barolo’s ability to age is very well known, many of our go-to Italian reds from last century come from its next-door neighbor in Barbaresco. What we look for are traditional producers who farmed old vineyards in balanced vintages, and what we often find is mature wine offering phenomenal value for the price.

This 25 year-old Barbaresco from Dante Rivietti illustrates that perfectly.

While Gonet is not a new name in Champagne - the family’s roots there date back to the 1400s - this bottling is unique. It’s the product of a collaboration between two of the world’s best sommeliers, Raj Parr from the U.S. and Marco Pelletier, who now lives in France but hails originally from Canada. Together, they make a vintage Champagne that’s crisp and mineral-driven, with texture and richness courtesy of extended aging before release.

If you’re not familiar with Peter Leipold or Moritz Kissinger, know that until recently, we weren’t either. Then we tasted wines from these two young German producers, and let’s just say, we weren’t surprised to hear that Klaus Peter Keller vouched for them both. These are some of the most exciting wines in Germany today.

Look at this old bottle of wine…
What is it? Keller, Spätburgunder 'Bürgel' 2009.
Is this winemaker still making wine? Yes, and it’s excellent.
Who else has a 2009 vintage? A lot of celebrity babies and Neymar Jr.’s international soccer career.
What was everyone listening to? I Gotta Feelin’ by the Black Eyed Peas.
What does this wine taste like? German pinot is better now than ever. Not so long ago, it was Keller, who found the balance of the delicate grape. Plus over a decade of time to refine itself, this thing is pretty.

From the people who brought you ‘chunks of fancy parm’ comes another very literally named snack: ‘the best feta.’ It’s made entirely from the milk of extremely happy free-ranging sheep in Le**os, Greece. It’s really great with a glass of chenin blanc, Chablis, or something else similarly crisp-but-rich.

This is a collection of wines from Giuseppe Rinaldi dating back more than 50 years. Along with Conterno and Mascarello, Rinaldi defines traditional Barolo. Now run by Giuseppe’s daughters, Marta and Carlotta, the winery remains uncompromisingly old school. These wines demand commitment. And they reward it.

Foul Witch, a new ‘restaurant-that-calls-itself-a-wine-bar-but-is-actually-a-full-on-restaurant’ opened a few months ago on the Lower East Side from the team behind and Blanca. It has quickly become one of our favorite new spots to eat and drink wine in our neighborhood, and we suggest you try to go as soon as you can.

We thought we would let you know what we drank there and what we think you should drink if you go. Link in our bio for more on .

Cab franc has the rare ability to be bright and easy-drinking, while at the same time savory and age-worthy. Few producers illustrate this like Domaine Filliatreau. Combine Filliatreau’s century-old vines with a sharp vintage like 2001, and you get a cab franc built for the long haul. Put another way, this wine has 20 years of age on it, but it’s still light and fresh enough to enjoy as a chilled red.

Kind of crazy that between 1991 and 2019 there are only a handful of vintages of Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet that have remained fresh and of the quality this winery has been able to achieve. After a slump in the mid 2000s, the current releases of Leflaive have been magical. The magic of the old stuff… we hope. And magnums age better too.

Until recently, Camille Thiriet made wine in a garage in Burgundy that had no electricity or running water. In other words, ‘artisanal’ didn’t really do it justice. While her production is still limited, she and her partner, Matt Chittick, have expanded their operation in the Côte de Nuits. They’re using old vines, minimal oak, and extraordinary attention to detail to make vibrant Burgundy that’s showing up on some of the best restaurant wine lists in the world.

What is it? López de Heredia, Rosado Gran Reserva 'Viña Tondonia' 2010.

Who else has a 2010 vintage? The oldest year of ‘Gen Alpha’.
So, should I be holding onto my favorite rosés to let them age and improve like this bottle? 99 times out of 100, no.
What does it taste like? The greatest unsweetened iced tea you’ve ever had.

Poggio di Sotto is one of our long time favorite producers. From cool, hilltop vineyards in Montalcino, they consistently make Tuscan wine more reminiscent of elegant Burgundy than too-juicy Brunello.

Poggio di Sotto’s trademark balance is on display in this bottle, which comes from one of the best Brunello vintages… ever. 2016. Go big.

If big Champagne houses with countless sources of grapes and armies of employees are at one end of the spectrum, then Jacques Lassaigne is at the other. Everything at this small ‘grower producer’ is handled by Jacques’ son, Emmanuel. Using organic chardonnay from his hometown of Montgueux, he crafts this crisp wine that epitomizes both the Lassaigne house style and pre-dinner Champagne in general.

Look at this very old bottle of sparkling wine…
What is it? Contratto, Nebbiolo Spumante 1960s.
‘60s’? They weren’t always as specific on the labels back then…
Is it a red sparkling wine? Nope.
Who else has a 60s vintage? Stanley Tucci, the moon landing, and a lot in between.
What does it taste like? What a good question. We would hope, though, hazelnuts, toast, and a tiny bit of lemon zest.
