🍾 Look who’s visiting! Michelangelo couldn’t contain his giggles as we unpacked this treasure trove of Pierre Peters and Savart champagne. It’s not every day we get such a special allocation, and having our tiny VIP here makes it all the more special.
Francesco’s joy is twice as bright with his son sharing this moment, reminding us that some joys, like fine champagne and family, are timeless.

Up your Montepulciano d’Abruzzo game (if you have one 🙃), with De Angelis Corvi’s purer & more vibrant expression of an ever-lovable varietal. Hard to find a more versatile red. Certified organic & in the process of converting to Biodynamic too.

Just In: If Catherine Deneuve were a wine, she would be this elegant white from one of the best producers in France's Loire Valley. Oozing Gallic sangfroid, this timelessly chic Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from clay and limestone vineyards in BuĂŠ, Vinon and CrĂŠzancy. Crisp, clear & precise, bien sĂťr.

An Italian makes the world’s most collectible Scotch Whisky?
Silvano Samaroli was a legendary independent bottler who pioneered the cask-strength movement (bottling at the original high proof). Although the maestro died in 2017, Samaroli still continues to release critically-acclaimed whiskies made from special barrel selections, single & vatted blend malt combinations and then aged in multiple casks from various vintages. This meticulous—bordering on maniacal—attention to detail (Samaroli noted cask numbers, wood types, distillation dates etc.) is what makes this Italian firm’s spirits so iconic. At auction, Samaroli bottlings have sold for as much as £72,600! Pictured above is one of a total of 334 bottles of this particular Caol Ila release. So it’s exceedingly rare too.

Presidential taste has varied widely from Honest Abe (water, thank you) to Franklin Pierce (who over-indulged in everything until he died of cirrhosis). But there are some trends. Skipping over beer-drinkers like Obama (NY law prohibits us from selling beer), whiskey was the favored drink of many including Eisenhower, Harding & LBJ. Theodore Roosevelt sought out mint juleps made of rye. While William McKinley preferred his rye straight up. Taft, Grant, Tyler, Madison & Monroe all drank Champagne. FDR & JFK both enjoyed their cocktails. Outlier Calvin Coolidge had a yen for sweet Tokaji. Perhaps the most discriminating presidential oenophile was Thomas Jefferson, who loved Madeira, Burgundy & Bordeaux. Whatever your choice, raise a glass to a president this weekend.

If you like Pecorino the cheese, you’ll love Pecorino the wine. This central Italian varietal has a distinct barnyard aroma. Yet, in the hands of regional OG Velenosi, the taste of this full-bodied white, Prope, is clean with notes of citrus and almonds. Best of both worlds.

A go-to burger wine, Open Now is deep red with a spicy kick, thanks to its blend of Syrah and Grenache. But production is anything but casual. The farm follows biodynamic practices, with legume cover crops planted between the vines to replenish nitrogen and encourage microbial activity. The Hegartys also collect rainwater, lower in pH to increase the efficiency of biodynamic preparations. And vines are pruned using a non-invasive method (Simonit & Sirch) to encourage health and resist disease. The Minervois site is equally special. High altitude and clay soils both offset the heat of the Languedoc. Vines up to 75-years-old root deeply, resulting in rich and fruity aromas. Low sulphur too. Being a carnivore never sounded so healthy.

Looking for something good to read this snowy weekend? This week, we hosted a party at the store for friend & poet Cynthia Zarin to celebrate the release of her first novel, Inverno. It’s a winter love story which has garnered some awesome reviews in the Times and The Washington Post, amongst others.

Needless to say, if you’re seeking something to accompany that snowbound book weekend, we’re here for you too.😉

A far cry from breezy & forgettable Sauvignon Blanc, Slovenian producer Movia worships the varietal. Their veneration starts with late harvesting & a maximum of 2 hours between the picking & fermentation! Movia only uses natural yeast plucked from the same grapes pre-harvest. Fermentation completes in wooden barriques where wine matures for 18 months on its own lees . The final step is an additional 4 months of ageing in the bottle. No sulfites or preservatives added.

So what does all that care produce? A complex white redolent of hay and elderflower. Dry but ripe, this golden wine pops with acidity and suffused with honey & gentle oak. Ready to enjoy today, but this unusual, age-able Sauvignon Blanc will continue to evolve for another decade.
