🔥A Big One🔥

We all love our Pinots and Beaujolais however sometimes you just need a big red wine to float your boat.

You might be cooking up something bold or juicy, or just feel like having the richness that comes with a wine like BC⚡️DC.

AKA Julien makes them real special - round, deep and full of great Tempranillo flavour, never heavy and always with a touch of freshness.

Love them ❤️

New Maker Introduction - Clément Gilles - Club Des Terres

Its no wonder that wines from the Ardéche in the Northern Rhone have been at very high demand in the natural wine sphere over the last few years.
Sitting between the Southern Rhone that produces, big, full and often tannic wine and the very north of the valley with the grandeur of Syrah from appellation such as Cornas, Crozes Hermitage, Saint Joseph et al, it has the promise to bring together the best of both.

Clément Gillet is a talented winemaker who was born and raised “between the vines” in the Ardéche and consequently developed a big passion for the Northern Rhone , and luckily, for wanting to share these wines with the world.
He recently formed Club Des Terres, a negocé buying excellent organic grapes from a select few growers that Clément works with on a regular basis. Syrah, Grenache and Marsanne growing at Saint Julien en St Alban, just south of Valance.

All things being equal, we expect to hear much more from Clément in the near future. In the meantime, we are very excited to introduce these 3 wines which we personally love.

1. Nasa - 70% Grenache / 30% Marsanne - A Clairet beaming with energy and good taste. We really like blends of red and white varieties, this one is beautifully cohesive.

2. Sydro - 50% Syrah / 50% Grenache - Luxurious silky wine that belongs up with the best of the Northern Rhone. Quite spectacular.

3. Dogo - A small project wine made from 100% Chardonnay from Morgon. Lovely, well behaved white.

We’re awfully late this year in releasing the wines of Laurent Lebled / Domaine A La Votre in Touraine. AND,

Due to a glitch in our logistics, quantities are quite small… BUT,

This is by far his most successful release in our eyes - ultra juicy, ultra pure wines, both made in Carbonic maceration, that are just out of this world 💫

Now available online.

Why do natural wines cost more than mass-produced wine?

It’s a very important question; naturally it comes down to the quality of wine how the wine is made. Take, for example, a £5 mass-produced wine. For a bottle to be sold to a consumer at this price, the amount spent on actually creating that wine, after tax, import cost, and various other expenses, is about 16 pence. (See the second picture) This means that, by definition, the quality of the wine is lower.

Furthermore, vineyard workers are potentially paid an unsustainable wage, various chemicals are used to force the maximum yield of grapes possible which as a result destroy eco-system around the vineyard. In the cellar heavy manipulation is used on low-quality grapes to make a wine fit for consumption. These are some of the measures that must be taken in mass-producing wine, and ones that go against all that we believe in.

When it comes to natural wine, the oftentimes higher price point ensures that you drink a sustainable wine - BETTER for you - BETTER for the maker - BETTER for the planet.
(We also think they are much tastier.)

This is why natural winemakers are totally transparent and eager for their consumers to understand how the wine is made. Many have spent years learning and honing their skills and make wine that they fully believe in. They, and everyone in their vineyards, work incredibly hard every year to produce each new vintage, believing that a philosophy of farming that improves the health of the land is the right thing to do.

All the wines at Pure Wines are made by producers that are transparent about their winemaking, and while their wines may be a little more expensive, they’re not totally unaffordable; the most expensive wine in the first photo is £12.90. So if you want to pay a few extra quid for a delicious natural wine, know that the extra money you are spending is on a bottle of wine made the right way.

The wines

Amics Bonics, Tempranacha, Ancestral (all 2021)

We are very excited to be writing this post, about these 3 wines. They’re the best wines yet to come from Dasca Vives, AND, they are a special collaboration between us and them. Only available in the UK via our website and our trade partners.

Amics Bonics - Amics Bonics translates s to Good Friends in Catalan - A blend of 80% Macabeo and 20% Vinyater (a very rare variety cultivated almost exclusively by Dasca Vives).
Delicious, light (10.95% abv!), ultra pure and an honest depiction of this hot Mediterranean terroir.

Tempranacha - An equal blend of Tempranillo (in Catalan Ull de Llebre) and Garnacha, powerful yet balanced, an explosion of dark fruit compote with a touch of Mediterranean undergrowth. Very digestible, gourmet wine.

Ancestral - Easy going bubbly, great way to introduce what PetNats are to friends!

Hope you’ll enjoy these ❤️

The terroir

Alt Camp, Catalonia, Mediterranean

Located in Alt Camp, a mere 12 miles from the Mediterranean sea and vineyards surrounded by typical crops for this regions such as olive trees, almonds, carob trees and cereal. The plots are planted amongst water streams and forests and receive the soothing winds of the “Miranda”, a mediterranean breeze that helps cool off the vines in the hot summer months.
you have a really specific growing region here, and comes across well in the wines.

The management is Biodynamic throughout and certified by the Catalan body - Terra dynamica.

The white varieties are Xarel-lo (AKA cartoixa), Macabeo, Malvasia de sitges and a Vinyater - a rare variety cultivated almost exclusively by Dasca Vives.
The reds are Tempranillo (AKA Ull de Llebre), Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Want to know what they make with all this goodness (including our collab with them)- 3rd part coming ASAP 🍷

The Power Couple

Josep Dasca & Alba Vives
One of the first wineries we started working with a few years back. Since then, this happy and lovely family grew along with the demand for their wines here in the UK.
Alba and Josep are good, honest people who make good, honest wine. The trajectory of their quality is going upwards and we look forward to new vintages and new collaborations with them.

Josep is a qualified agricultural and forestry engineer (in charge of the vineyards basically) and Alba is trained oenologist (in charge in the winery).

They both come from a long family line of winemaking and agriculture in their region - Alt Camp in Catalonia, which made it only natural that they would eventually take over their 7 hectares of vineyards and restore an old farmhouse as their winery.

More about their vineyards and region in the next post! 🍇

🧡 Ovella Negra 🧡

Mas Candi really did this time - juicy, delicious orange wine that’s very approachable and interesting.

It’s made of white grenache, Muscat and a splash of MALVASIA DE SITGES.

A beautiful aromatic grape that makes this wine really stand out in our opinion. Literally smells like a mix of starburst!

The Bookkeeper 2020

We are extremely proud to work with Tim and distribute his 2020 rendition of “The Bookkeeper” - It’s now live on the website.

“English, maceration (AKA skin contact) natural wine. 120 bottles made.
We are incredibly proud to launch this rare and delicious creation by Charlie Herring wines (winemaker Tim Phillips) in Lymington Spa.
We have been working with Tim for some years now and it is fascinating to observe the high quality of viticulture and winemaking he is capable of. World-class in our eyes.

The Bookkeeper 2020 is made from 92% Pinot Blanc fermented on skins for 3 weeks before transferring to barrel (old wood) in mid ‘21 for 12 months prior to bottling, and 8% Chardonnay, direct press to ferment in steel with raising partly in steel and part barrel (old wood).
The fermentation and raising are done separately and then blended.
Spontaneous fermentation, nothing added, no fining, no filtration, 10mg/l added at bottling.

Pristine and very expressive nose with notes of ripe exotic fruit, an assortment of stone fruit, ripe orange rind and mandarin marmalade. The palate is bone dry (slightly surprising as the nose “promises” sweetness), controlled acidity with a slight briny feel on the attack continuing onto a long finish influenced by the Chardonnay’s complexity with a remote memory of sweetness on the very end.

INTRODUCING: OUR GLORIOUS LEADER - GUY KORDOVA

Guy doesn’t come from a wine background. Even before he tried natural wines wines some 7-8 years ago, he believed in the philosophy of the wine-making. So much so that within a year he had set up a Pure Wines, that imports wines with the aim of, as he puts it, “Bringing more natural wines at good prices to the UK market. Wines that can be traced back to the vineyard, beyond tech sheets, to the philosophy of the winemaker.”

Guy wants people to experiment with natural wines, from smashable petnats to deep, complex reds, “I want to surprise people whilst still giving them something they can relate to.”

The future of Pure Wines is as bright as the sparkling autumn sun on the day this post is being written. As well as becoming a UK leader in sustainable wine, Guy wants to change the culture around natural wine, “Let’s demystify it, make it approachable, make it into what it should be – something that brings joy.” Crucial in this would be pushing for a certification of natural wines, which for Guy is key to exposing them to a wider audience. Much more to come ❤️
