Juneteenth marks our country’s second Independence Day, but is often overlooked event in our nation’s history. On June 19, 1865, Union troops freed enslaved African Americans in Galveston Bay and across Texas some two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States.

But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” by the newly freed people in Texas.

An immigrant, former labor organizer, small business owner, and city planner, Ahsha has been active in local government for over 15 years, working for the San Francisco Housing Authority, Mayor’s Office of Community Development, and Department of Public Works under the Brown and Newsom administrations. Later, he served as the Political Director for the San Francisco Janitors Union-Local 87.

We're a community hub in the SoMa West neighborhood, and while this is focused on SoMa West community, we invite anyone who would like to meet the candidate.

We're a community hub in the SoMa West neighborhood, and on May 6, we're hosting another Meet the Candidate town hall. This time, it is with Aaron Peskin for a discussion and Q&A about "How to Get Respect for Your Neighborhood". This is primarily focused on SoMa residents. Pre-register at the link in our bio. Originally, SWCBD invited Aaron to give a talk on the subject of "How to Get Respect for Your Neighborhood" following the wildly divergent treatment of a Chinatown transitional housing project versus our experience in SOMA. We poured classic Cali wines from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s alongside 2020 Vintage releases while discussing all the aspects involved with aging wine, and what natural characteristics a wine needs to stand the test of time. 🍷⏳
