2020 Pouilly Fume, La Belle Endormie, Domaine Agisson - This Sleeping Beauty (La Belle Endormie) wakes up in the glass – fragrant and alluring. Aromas are fresh and floral, with cool summer fruits. A swirl of sweet and tangy citrus greets the palate, soon joined by a mélange of fresh pears and white peaches, with notes of melon and kiwi – some minerals and herbs – a flirt of white flowers. Memories of bottles opened and shared. There have been many over the years - too many bottles to save - so why these? I'm not sure. But I do remember the 1929 Santenay 1er Cru, Gravieres, Jessiaume. Marc Jessiaume brought it from Burgundy, for a client tasting he was hosting at our store. At that time it was well over 70 years old! And it was amazing and truly memorable. I opened the 1972 La Tache, DRC for a client tasting a few years ago. The fill wasn't looking good and I was hesitant to sell it, so - what the heck - I opened it. It was glorious! The situation was similar with the 1969 Volnay 1er Cru, Santenots, Leroy - and once again, mature but compelling and lovely. Who said Burgundy doesn't age! And then there's the very rare 1979 Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises! Okay, it's not Burgundy, but you know we dabble and, wow, what a dabble this was! You don't have to save empty bottles to enjoy the memories. As long as you savor the moment, they'll linger with every wine you enjoy.

Want something a little different? Want a wine that’s ripe, friendly and a bit frisky? Then you want to try this delicious white Bourgogne from Nicolas Rossignol. It’s Bourgogne with a twist. Unlike the majority of white Bourgogne, this one is not produced from Chardonnay. It’s produced from Aligote – the historically unloved grape – that is now enjoying an abundance of love and attention.
The aromas are fresh and crisp, but the first sip is rich and round. A mélange of fresh pears, green apples and white peaches, with a splash of Meyer lemon, laced with white flowers, minerals and a sprinkle of spice. So delicious – so nice. Don’t mess it up with Cassis!
Aligote has been growing in Burgundy for centuries – essentially untamed and neglected – resulting in high yields and exceptionally high acidity. The resulting wines were mean, lean and unsellable.
Then, the Mayor of Dijon, Felix Kir (sometime in the 1800s) came up with the brilliant idea of adding a splash of Cassis to Aligote, thus creating a “cocktail” (appropriately names Kir) that became fashionable in Parisian Cafes. This was a boon to Dijon’s Crème de Cassis producers and helped “move” an abundance of high acid wines. (Side note. That was the French, and original version of Kir. The U.S. "translation" was different).
In more modern times, we must credit Aubert de Villaine (of Domaine de la Romanee Conti fame) for bringing Aligote into the mainstream as a stand-alone wine. I think it was Villaine's success that led other growers to begin paying closer attention to Aligote.
