2012 Unico, Vega Sicilia

Vega Sicilia, Spain’s most renowned producer, traces its roots to 1864, when Don Eloy Lecanda Chaves planted a vineyard east of Valladolid, in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. The grape cuttings were from Bordeaux and by the 1920s the estate’s wines were winning acclaim at international wine festivals. In 1982 the estate was bought by the Alvarez Diez family, which still owns and operates the nearly 300-acres property. Grapes grown are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Vega Siclia’s blend is generally about 70% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and the remainder made up of Merlot and Malbec. Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva and the Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva Especial, a blend of three vintages, regularly earn very high ratings from critics. Parker has called Vega Sicilia “one of the world’s most iconic wines.”

Chateau d'Yquem

Château d’Yquem was the only wine in the Sauternes/Barsac area to receive a First Growth distinction in the original and still highly influential 1855 Bordeaux classification. The region has been famous for many centuries for its sweet white wines, now considered dessert wines, and Château d’Yquem has always been the undisputed king of Sauternes. The estate also makes a dry white Bordeaux called Ygrec “Y,” which receives excellent reviews despite being far less well known than the famous dessert wine made at the estate. Château d’Yquem sits on a small hill and has an ideal terroir and perfect microclimate. According to local lore the 19th century proprietors of Château d’Yquem were the first French winemakers to recognize the value of so-called “noble rot,” which is a benevolent form of botrytis bunch rot, a fungal attack on the vines and grapes. Château d’Yquem includes 254.2 acres of vineyards planted to 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon. On average the vines are 30 years old and about 110,000 bottles are produced each year. The distinguished winemaker and estate director Pierre Lurton is President and CEO. Lurton is also Managing Director of Cheval-Blanc.

Chateau Rayas

One of the most famous estates in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, in France’s southern Rhone Valley. Founded in the late 19th century by Albert Reynaud, a lawyer and notary from Avignon, the estate is today run Emmanuel Reynaud, the fourth generation of the family to take control of the 56-acre estate with its 37 acres of vineyards. About three-quarters of the estate’s wines are reds and are made mostly of Grenache. The whites are made of Grenache Blanc and Clairette. The Reynaud family also owns and operates Chateau de Fonsalette and Chateau des Tours, both producers of Rhone Valley wines. Robert M. Parker Jr. has called Chateau Rayas “one of the mythical names of France” because of its outstanding Chateauneuf-du-Papes.

Ohmine Shuzou is a pioneer sake brewery which aims to take advantage of the abundant natural blessings of Mine City through novel ideas. “Ohmine sake” has a sweet and rich aroma of white peaches, and is created with “Benten water,” also known as “Water for Gods,” and locally grown rice, “Yamada Nishiki,” which is additive free and masterfully crafted specifically for our premium sake. Since its introduction to the worldwide market, “Ohmine” rapidly gained popularity and has been served at Michelin three star restaurants and top fashion parties, and has been introduced to six countries. In 2013, the Japanese Government served Ohmine Sake to various world leaders at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2013 in Davos, Switzerland.

2007 Jacques Prieur, Musigny Grand Cru

Musigny is considered one of the greatest vineyards in the Cote d’Or, in Burgundy. At 26.5 acres it includes two sections, Grand Musigny and Les Petits Musigny. The vineyard is 260 to 300 meters in elevation and the soil is unusual for the region, a mix of limestone and red clay. Comte de Vogue owns about three-quarters of the vineyard, with a holding of 17 acres. The next largest landowners are Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, with 3.2 acres; and Jacques Prieur with 1.7 acres. Also noteworthy is Leroy’s tiny .7 acre holding. Though most of the vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir, Comte de Vogue plants a small parcel of Chardonnay, which is sold as Bourgogne blanc due to the relatively youth of the Chardonnay vines. Wine writer Clive Coates has written that “at its best the red wine (of Musigny) can be quite simply the most delicious wine to be found in Burgundy.”

2016 Lucien Le Moine, Chambolle-Musigny, Les Amoureuses

Les Amoureuses is the most famous and highly respected of the 24 Premier Cru climats in Chambolle-Musigny.

The vineyard is at the southern end of the Chambolle-Musigny commune. It lies just above the village of Vougeot and below the (Le) Musigny Grand Cru site on the limestone slopes of the Côte d'Or. The vineyard is often considered to be on par with its more highly ranked neighbor. The large Les Charmes vineyard lies along the climat's northern border. Les Petits Vougeots Premier Cru is just to the south.

The terroir here is slightly different from that in the more northerly stretches of Chambolle-Musigny. The chalky soil is much lighter at this end of the commune, and is composed of a thin layer of rocky topsoil over a hard limestone subsoil. This drains freely, forcing roots to dig into cracks in the rock. Vigor is controlled and yields are limited, producing small, concentrated berries.

Domaine Ponsot, Clos de la Roche

Clos de la Roche is the most northerly of Morey-Saint-Denis' four grand cru vineyards. It is located on the slopes of the Côte d'Or escarpment, above the Route des Grands Crus road (the D122), and covers 16.9 hectares (42 acres) of Pinot Noir vines – more than twice that of Clos Saint-Denis to the south.

Clos de la Roche is considered as one of Morey-Saint-Denis' best climats, and makes plump, structured wines with cherry and truffle characters.

1999 Louis Latour, Chambertin

Le Chambertin is the most important grand cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, one of the northernmost wine villages in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. The vineyard produces exclusively red wines made from Pinot Noir, which rank among the world's very finest. Napoleon famously drank Chambertin wine, even during his military campaigns abroad. He consumed it daily, diluted with water, from bottles embossed with the letter N. Classic Chambertin wine has a rich ruby color (fading to brick-red with age) and a deeply perfumed nose of plums, red cherries, earth and sweet spice.

Domaine Leflaive, Batard Montrachet

Batard-Montrachet is one of the four great Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards in the appellation of Puligny-Montrachet, in Burgundy. Like its neighbor Le Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet also lies partly in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation just to the south of Puligny-Montrachet. At 30 acres, Batard-Montrachet is the largest of four Grand Crus and it is divided into nearly 30 individually owned parcels. Located just to the east of Le Montrachet, the soil of Batard-Montrachet is deeper and less thin. The largest landholders are Leflaive, with 4.5 acres; Ramonet, 1.2 acres; Bachelet-Ramonet, 1.4 acres; and Paul Pernot, 1.5 acres.

2018 Pierre Yves Colin Morey, Pernand Vergelesses Les Belle Filles

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is a 13.5-acre domaine in Chassagne-Montrachet. Pierre-Yves is the eldest son of Marc Colin, who 40 years ago started the domaine that would become Marc Colin et Fils. Today Marc Colin et Fils is run by Marc’s two younger sons. Pierre-Yves was winemaker for Marc Colin et Fils from 1995 to 2005, but in 2006 Pierre-Yves struck out on his own with a small domaine and a micro-negociant business. He has expanded his properties since then and now his grapes are about 70% from his own parcels and 30% purchased. Colin-Morey produces about 6,000 cases a year and has Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards in Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. Pierre-Yves makes mostly white wines, from Grand Crus to villages appellations. But it is his Premier Cru whites that have most impressed reviewers and collectors. Clive Coates notes that Pierre-Yves makes wine that “is pure, elegant and precise. He is a name to watch.”

This is a hypnotic, mesmerizing wine that is unlike any Champagne I have ever tasted. A burnished, deep orange, the wine emerges from the glass with delicate layers of truffles, mushrooms, tea and autumn leaves that recall a great, mature Grand Cru red Burgundy. Candied orange peel, dried roses, spices, apricot jam and white pepper are some of the notes that develop with air. Despite its vivid, textured personality the wine hovers on the palate in a weightless, ethereal style. Geoffroy served the 1990 Rose Oenotheque in the new Riedel Burgundy glass, which worked beautifully, although this drinking experience may not be for everybody. With air, the 1990 Rose Oeenotheque naturally loses much of its effervescence and turns more wine-like.
