In September, I was lucky enough to visit Portugal’s Douro valley on a trip for journalists and buyers organised by SoulWines. After months of lockdowns, it was a joy to be back out in vineyards and wineries, meeting the people who make the wines.One highlight was spending time with the Alves de Sousa family – talented winemaker Tiago, sister Patrícia and dad Domingos – leading lights in fine wine production in the region (alvesdesousa.com). Their work to revive abandoned vineyards, championing native varieties and old vines, is reflected in a range of accomplished wines that really show what the Douro can offer. Sampling them at Quinta da Gaivosa, over looking the vines,was an added delight. So hard to choose favourites, but I’d recommend: Quinta da Gaivosa 2017 (£45.99 Top Selection), a lifted and harmonious field blend made only in top years;the tangy, long-lived oxidised white Pessoal Branco 2015; and Caldas Reserva Touriga Nacional 2019 (£19.99 Top Selection), a characterful expression of one of the Douro’s signature grapes.

Nestled at the eastern end of the Loire Valley in France, the Pouilly-Fumé appellation produces world famous Sauvignon Blanc wines; rivaling those of close neighbour, Sancerre.

Not to be confused with Pouilly Fuisse - an appellation south of Burgundy - the Pouilly-Fumé name derives from Pouilly-sur-Loire, the village the wines come from, and 'Fumé', short for Blanc Fumé, the local nickname for Sauvignon Blanc. These are vibrant wines often characterised by a smoky, struck gunflint aroma (hence Fumé) and a refreshing streak of acidity. Absolutely delicious to sip on their own, even better to pair with food - think shellfish, goats cheese and summer salads.
