“Assyrtiko is forging a reputation for itself as Greece's noble white grape, offering more complexity than some of the more aromatic varieties. This new listing from the Zacharias estate is smartly packaged and equally smartly made. It's from the northern Greek mainland and is more approachable and fruit forward, less austere, than many examples from the island of Santorini. The alcohol content is punchy, and this is full bodied, but it's completely harmonious, with pear and green apple fruit, a streak of minerality and a saline bite. A great way of getting to know Assyrtiko before you experiment with more austere expressions perhaps, and its exuberance means you could quite happily enjoy it without food.”

Since 1894, the Mailliard family has been active in the production of Champagne in Vertus, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, where their brand was created in 1953. Michel Mailliard expanded the vineyard to 24 hectares while developing a range of six different Cuvées. Michel Mailliard’s Champagnes are all 1er Cru and typical of the southern part of the Côte des Blancs: they are light and delicate, clearly marked Chardonnay - the symbol of refinement and elegance - full-bodied but also fresh, straightforward, complex, elegant and lively. They regularly receive awards and recognized in international competitions such as the Best Sparkling Wines of the World and Guide Hachette.

Edge Cabernet is an intriguing wine that artfully balances the rich, red fruit of Cabernet Sauvignon with earthy, spicy notes that add a true sense of place and character. Deep ruby garnet in color with inviting aromas of strawberry and blueberry jam, licorice and figs, the wine is densely packed with nutmeg, cedar, blackberry, chocolate and vanilla bean. With structured yet supple tannins, the wine is medium bodied with a long finish lingering in cassis, espresso and mocha. Drink now or hold on for a few years, this bottle promises to be worth it!

“If the 2015 Lady May resembled a powerful, dense, Pauillac-styled Cabernet Sauvignon led red blend, and the 2016 a broader, softer expression from a warm dry vintage, then the 2017 is pretty much the antithesis, boasting the most elegant, silky, seamlessly harmonious texture combined with an attractively fragrant, Margaux-esque delicacy, an understated density and graceful precision. While super youthful, the wine inevitably displays some of the lush, alluring and reassuringly expensive new oak creaminess, boasting layers of warm buttered brown toast smothered in black currant preserve, fresh espresso, hints of mocha dust and delicate vanilla pod spice notes. But probably the most pleasing element about this wine is the way ex-winemaker Luke O'Cuinneagain captured the truest essence of the 2017 vintage with its extreme purity, weightless fruit concentration that dances across the palate together with a focused, piercing intensity on the long, silky, luxurious finish. This is class personified and I for one am completely smitten. Drink on release and over 25+ years. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot.”

The Emeritus Story

Emeritus was founded in 1999 by Brice Cutrer Jones – the same year he sold Sonoma–Cutrer Vineyards, the iconic winery that he had spent a quarter century building into one of California’s most revered Chardonnay producers. “As one chapter in my life ended, another began,” says Brice. “I knew that I wanted to take everything I’d learned about growing grapes and apply it to making the finest Pinot Noirs in California. For over two decades, this has been our mission.” To achieve this goal, Brice was joined by several talented individuals who he had spent decades working alongside at Sonoma–Cutrer; people who shared his exacting vision and his desire to create a new benchmark for American Pinot Noir.

Today, Emeritus is run by Brice’s daughter, dynamic second-generation President Mari Jones. “Every wine we make comes from vines we planted and grapes we grew ourselves, and our expertise comes from working exclusively with Pinot Noir” says Mari. “I’ve known many of our team since I was a child playing in the vineyards at Sonoma-Cutrer. Each person here is among the best at what they do, and most bring a lifetime of experience to their roles. We love what we do, and we love working together, which is part of the essence of our wines.”
