In Ename, near Oudenaarde, there are the ruins of the Abbey of Ename. The history of this abbey goes back until the Treaty of Verdun in 843. But during the French Revolution everything has been razed to the ground. On the site of the ruins stands a museum now. In 1990 Brewery Roman became sponsor of this archeological project. On the occasion of an open-air spectacle in the ruins in 1990, Brewery

Roman brewed for the first time a double and triple beer called ‘Ename’. Later on in 1997, a blond version is added. Since 2002, Brewery Roman also commercialises Ename Cuvée 974 , which is sold from September till February. The name refers to the date of foundation of the borough Ename. The newcomer has a totally different taste. Not only malt, but also wheat is used, which makes the body totally different from the other Ename beers. Each one of the Ename beers has its own character, to enjoy on different occasions.
