What is Cider? How is it made? (1/2) 🍏🍎
Our new Natural Cider, , have very kindly given us access to some behind the scenes shots of their cider making process. So let’s talk a bit about what cider is, and how its made in a two part post!
To put it simply, Cider is an alcoholic drink made from fermented juice from apples and it’s most popular in the UK, Ireland and parts of Europe. The words Cidre, Sicer or Ciser is first mentioned in Olde French and English texts as early as the 12th/13th century, however people fermenting apples dates back to even 55 BCE, when Julius Caesar was invading Britain - he found native Celts fermenting small crabapples and took it back through Europe. So it’s fair to say, people have been getting drunk on apples and fruits for a fair few years.
As time went on, people moved from crab apples to experiment with different apple variants. English styles are usually higher in alcohol content, drier and French/European styles are lower alcohol whilst using sweeter variants. Then there’s also a wide range of similar variants like Perry, made with pears, or ciders mixed with other fruits like berries or stone fruits.

Some of you have probably seen this by now or even popped in for a pint, but we realised we hadn’t done a dedicated post on this so… here you go.
In Dec we opened the doors to - a venture between Quality Drops very own Russell as well as the guys from Beer Pioneer and Beer Clan.
It’s a relaxed Riverside Taproom with 8 Rotating taps, 100+ beers in the fridge with all your QD favourites, natural wines and Pies by our good mate 🥧
You can enjoy the cosy atmosphere inside or you can chill out on the banks of the Singapore River to watch the world go by - all whilst enjoying a lovely drop.

Dry January means Dry Ciders right?
Dry Jan doesn’t really work for us, we are in the game of selling great drinks. Therefore we like to see the start of the year as a time to take a bit of a reset and maybe drink something a bit different instead - and it doesn’t mean you have to drink loads!
Some UK breweries and stores have branded this ‘Try-anuary’, where you try different styles of beer, different breweries or just a different beverage altogether. After all, that’s what we all love - learning a little and expanding our horizons in knowledge and taste.
Enter - - a family owned cidery 🍎🍏from Hereford in England. Perfect timing, their cider arrived in Singapore for the first time last month.
All of their ciders are lovingly small batch and naturally fermented. We’ve got an excellent range of their latest seasonal releases, which have varied finish such as barrel ageing in wine or spirits casks, dry-hopped or had other fruits added in. All this as well as some core classics. We’ve tried a few and we’ve been super impressed so far, they go really well with a lovely bit of cheese too 🧀

What happens when two legends of craft beer come together? The answer is, the beer of the summer.
Sierra Nevada is widely regarded as the brewery that started the craft beer revolution. So when Mountain Culture recently brewed a beer for the summer with them, the reception in Australia was huge. Sold out in a couple days meaning that the guys had to put some more in the tank - and then that sold out.
We’ve got our hands on this super limited hazy pale and we reckon it won’t be around for long. So check the webshop and grab some of this summer smasher for those hot moments in between the rain!

Well the guys started with the intention that AF beer shouldn't be less tasty or appealing becuase it's alcohol free, it's all about using the same high quality ingredients and process that goes into alcoholic craft beer.

This Saturday we are teaming up with our friends and to organise the hottest (and possibly fastest) pub crawl of the year.
Drinkers will have to master the fine balance of pacing themselves on the sesh, but getting around the circuit in as little time possible… ⏱ Last year saw the heavens open but that did not slow down peoples ability to put the pints away.
There are THREE top prize bundles to be had for the first five to clock a stamp at each of the bars.

Alcohol free beer is sh*t💩🍻 That's the what we've heard a lot over the last few years that we have been working in craft beer, or all beer for that matter. And to a certain extent, it's true... Alcohol free or low alcohol beer has historically been low on flavour or just weird.
However - over the last year or so, we've started to try more and more no and low alcohol beers that have made us re-think our expectations. Then, refreshing non-alcoholic pilsners, XPAs etc. found a place in our drinks line up more and more. Great for a certain occasion, maybe when your want to be fresh in the morning, trying to get stacked or just taking it easy on a hot day out under the equatorial sun. You surely wouldn't sit down and drink one for the taste though?
That's when we heard of . The UK gypsy-brewers (use other peoples kit!), started their brewing journey in the first UK COVID lockdown, looking to brew top drawer beers without the alcohol. Cool artwork, hazy brews and one thing that really got our attention - growth. The 'hype' (hate that word...) that we were seeing around Mash Gang was crazy, a successful crowdfunder, beers selling out, 700% growth in a year, collabs with some of the best breweries around, exporting and brewing across the world - these guys were changing the perception of alcohol free beers. We had to try some, and that was that.
So we are very happy to say that we are officially bringing Mash Gang to Singapore. We had a call with the lads and both had similar ideas of where we think the future of lo/no alcohol craft beers are going and the potential in somewhere like Singapore. This direct connection to the brewery will allow us to get all the latest and best brews that they have to offer. We truly believe that this these beers have a place in everyone's beer line up, whatever wets your whistle.
We've got their signature beers like Stoop Lager, Chug Hazy Pale Ale, seasonal east and west coasts, stouts, and some great collabs with the likes of Vault City and Verdant. They will arrive in a few weeks, so subscribe to our newsletter on the webshop and keep your eyes peeled here for more info.

We had a great time speaking to everyone and hanging out with friends old and new over the Brewnanza weekend.
It was awesome to meet the team from and - showed them some hawker sites with and had his noodles allocation for the year! 🍜
Thanks to everyone that helped out at the stall, designing it, pouring out slushies and pints or just came to enjoy a couple!
Although we are always knackered from the event it’s the good memories that last 😁

Just landed - a new haul of GARAGE 🇪🇸⚡ beers from Barcelona, arriving FRESH by airfreight 🛬 We’ve got their uber-fresh trio of BLAU IPAs, taking inspiration from some of the work they are doing to help fund marine conservation work in the Mediterranean. Look for HIPPOCAMPUS, CYSTOSEIRA, PORIFERA.
We’ve also got a whole range of their other July beers. The July IPA ‘DEL BARRIO’ (from the neighbourhood) visits the Sants area. Loaded with Mosaic, Amarillo and Columbus hops this will jump into your nostrils and give you a heady mix of sticky sweaty mango, pine resin, lemon zest and blueberry.
ACE DORADO - Is a YAKIMA CHIEF collab with booming notes of mango, guava and lychee from the minute we opened the bag and this translated into the finished beer. Combined with gooseberry and Sauv Blanc heavy Nelson Sauvin, our selected lot of Citra which is very much a citrus bomb, this is one killer IPA.
DH SANTAKOOO - A regular batch of Santako was mistakenly given a double dose of hops bringing it to a colossal 23g/l dry hop. That is DIPA levels of hops. And the result is smashing. Booming with aromas of pine needles, fleshy orange and grapefruit and a some overripe peach on the back end. There is also a delicious gobstopper note that is so enticing. This is a West Coast IPA that has been pushed into a juicier territory yet retains plenty of dank notes.
ALL IN BAMBOO - Peach and Early Grey sour - A wheat heavy base beer received a steeping of aromatic Earl Grey tea before being sent to the fermenter where it was destined to meet loads of beautiful peach. The result is a refreshing summer ice tea style sour ale that beloows juicy peach with a beautiful bergamot undercurrent.
As well as a bunch of other core beers, including OCATA, P9 sour and WHEELS OFF, an English Bitter.

Finding GOLD at 2023 🏅
Such a good week! We are just about recovered from the BeerFestAsia 2023 weekend. As our first big event, it was both exciting and knackering but we know that next time it will be that little bit easier.
Teaming up with Beer Clan to bring back to life and we had fly over from Edinburgh to help us sling sours over at the Vault City stall.
We were totally loving the fact so many of you were coming down to our stalls and loving the beer. We had quite the queue at times, and we were stressed changing the kegs every couple of hours… The fact a 13% Azvex imperial stout lasted 2 hours is beyond us! However, it was great fun and we would do it all again. Thanks to all those that visited the stall, friends, QD customers, new drinkers and industry pals alike. Cheers , and for putting up with us lending tools 🧰 and keeping us company.
A highlight was winning GOLD for both beers we entered into the BFA 2023 awards. Strawberry Sundae () won the best sour and Looper IPA () won best IPA - both us and the breweries were loving the recognition from the panel for these great beers.
We also couldn’t have done this without help and volunteering from a lot of people. who designed all of the stand branding and graphics, bringing our visions to life. Our dependable friends who volunteered behind the bars Danny, Joe, Rory, Crystal, Tasha, Stella, Jack, Charlotte, Konsti were absolute legends and many did multiple days - couldn’t have done it without them…
That’s it for now, we have learnt a lot in the process. We will be repping Vault City at .sg in the first weekend of August so get that in your diaries.

Dory will still be a part of QD overseas but in SG it will just be Russell - who is gonna need help 🫠

The recovery plan is a fresh airfreighted pallet of beers with a few cans chucked on!
Mango Looper 🥭 we can’t wait to try this fruit loaded version of one of our best beers.
We’ve got the summer sessions covered with a couple of NZ hops 3.9% pales and a session stou
FCs first DIPA this year, a fresh big beer with Centennial and Talus hops.
And of course some of the classics like Looper, Repeater etc.
So tuck in! We’ve kept the prices the same as we would have if we had had them by seafreight so it’s not going to break the bank - and a harder lesson for us 😉

PORRON PRACTICE WITH @garagebeerco! 🇪🇸🍻 Last weekend we managed the squeeze in a weekend in Barcelona for a little reunion. What a great opportunity to go practice our Porron pouring skills with the legends at Garage and check out some of their latest beers and new bars. We had a tour around the brewery whilst they were packaging their latest collabs from the recent @mashbeerfest and then best of all… we got to try them. Our stand outs were the collar DIPA with @theveilbrewing and their first ever sour IPA with @hudsonvalleybrewery - amazing. But that’s when it started to get a little lively… @justina.been.here is the perfect coach on the Porron… and us willing students were not content with the standard pour - inverted grip, double Porron and the second floor pour all followed…. With mixed success. In need of some food and a change of clothes we called it a day and went back into town to check out their new bar/Peruvian restaurant@garagexwarike. A must visit if you are in BCN. Thank you for having us @garagebeerco @justina.been.here and we are sorry about the mess we made of your brewery floor 😬🙏❤️
