Oakridge (Yarra Valley) Has Arrived ...

Its pretty difficult not to feel a little jazzed about finally getting access to a steady flow of this esteemed brand. Oakridge was one of the very first wineries that seduced me into a life-long love affair with the Yarra and after all these years it continues to be a major reason why...

Earlier this year saw me "working" at a Wine Victoria Trade Event. With literally thousands of wines to try and thats not even thinking about the fortifieds, spririts, kombucha`s etc that make up the Victorian wine scene it required a super-human effort not to get lost in the mosh pit of Bachanalian excess and hope to remember where the exit is when the lights came back on.

My liver's "strategy" for want of a better word is to stick to a single varietal and try to get my arms around qualitative benchmarks from that single perspective. This time it was chardonnay.

I think it was Lisa-Perrotti Brown who once wrote that the maximum number of empirical tastes one's palate can objectively experience is around 37. Needless to say I had pushed that benchmark out significantly before I got to the Oakridge booth. Not to say that the 4 or 5 dozen chardonnays before them were not a delight to experience but when one is in the presence of greatness - time stops and perspective changes.

Philip Rich - a tasting judge for the Australian Wine Companion describes Oakridge winemaker David Bicknell as "the godfather of modern Australian chardonnay" and its easy to understand his point of view.

To my mind - the mark of a genius winemaker is to be able to weave a style all the way through their body of work. Its one thing to create a show-stopper of a wine such as Oakridge 864 Chardonnay 2022 - which won Wine of the Year from the Australian Wine Companion, but to maintain a stylistic standard right through the various price brackets is quite something else.

As a body of work, he signature stamp of effortless panache and grace flows through everything. There is an element of "slipperyness" about the wines that contrast so effectively with the richness of fruit and blindingly good acids.

We are fortunate to secure some pinot and cabernet as well from the range which no doubt we will all have together at a dinner or tasting sometime this year. Those who purchase Oakridge will be offered first right of refusal when the time comes to host such an event...

The quality of this range is prodigious and important. We are delighted to be able to bring Oakridge back to Singapore today and every day from here on ...

Dried game spoor, violets and wet charcuterie. This wine is a thrilling reflection of the Swartland. Supposedly the 2021 is even better. There is a certain luxury in tasting a wine that is so assuredly bankable for the long run and this is one of them.

The branding on the Blank Glove vino is a bit of a nightmare from a marketing point of view but well worth the tsorris if you can it. This 2019 is mostly Cab Franc then Cabernet. Looked at it six months ago and it was a pimply red-headed step child of a wine with no cohesion and all angles and pointy character.
A totally different wine now with amazing integration, a cashmere smooth integration and oodles of time to run.
Lots of cows ass to start with but an hour in the decanter sorted that out and what remained was woven brilliantly into the matrix of the wine.

Vintage Rioja Wine Dinner @ Gaig - Thurs 5th September ...

There is one particular source with whom we have worked for many years now. Their model is to seek out quality cellars all around Spain, curate them and offer for release.

The vast majority of the wines land up with a major retailer in Manhatten, and we are fortunate enough to get sight of stock as it comes up. A few months ago we had a very succesful release from a large collector in Spain. We acuired a set of wines from this range for the purposes of showing the tremendous quality and relative value to be found amongst these collections.

People who attend the dinner will taste a series of what the curators deem to be amongst the finest examples from this cellar. There will be an offer of more wines from the cellar made available for dinner attendees and ahead of a general offer to the database.

Please note that your booking can only be considered secured if you make payment with this booking. Any bookings made and not paid for will be reversed within 24 hours.

The Wines: (Consumption based on one bottle per person)

Please bear in mind that there will be bottle variation with the older vintages but history suggests that source has consistantly produced immaculately stored wines.

Boekenhoutskloof Helderberg Winery Stellenbosch Reserve Red 2022 [Decanter 91] @ $39 net ...

Usually when somebody uses the words "cheap and cheerful", I develop an unsightly rash somewhere on my body that I would rather forget about. Its generally a half-hearted attempt to justify lesser quality for a correspondingly lesser price, and thats a medical prescription I do my utmost to avoid...

Boekenhoutskloof has become a juggernaut of a brand with interests sweeping from Franschoek, to the Swartland (Porseleinberg & Chocolate Block) and back to Stellenbosch. This relatively recent acquisition of long established vines on the Helderberg wine farm makes a huge amount of sense.

Their 7 Chairs range specialises in Cabernet and Syrah, along with some of the best Semilon in the country to boot. If one was splitting hairs, the Helderberg is something of a wine region in itself, being on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. The terroir is different as is the altitude. The site benefits massively from its access to moisture laden ocean breezes and then there's the question of vine history.

Cabernet was the first varietal to be planted in the Cape and this site looking over the blustery False Bay was one of the first places. The juice from these vines is what is going into the Helderberg Winery Stellenbosch Reserve Red 2022 @ $39. Along with a smattering of Cinsault and Syrah - this wine is a major contender for value proposition of the year. It may be cheap but its delivering a whole lot more than cheerful with is intensely glossy and refined nose. The three varietals coalesce magnificently in one effortlessly pristine glass of wine.

This is very hard to beat...

Blank Canvas Wines - Featuring Sancerre Style Abstract Three Rows Sauvignon Blanc 2020 (CD 95) @ $45 net ...

Blank Canvass wines are an operation that has no doubt taken years to become an overnight sensation - but success is now assured with their on-going record-breaking releases. They are based in Awaterre Valley, but draw juice from the very best of vines wherever they can find them all around NZ.

Its seldom that one winery at this price point can pull down this array of awards and ratings, but given the body of experience that this youthful husband and wife team have already under their belts it seems the world is now their oyster.

Matt Thompson is an international winemaking consultant for over 20 years and 40 vintages under his belt. Wife Sophie Parker-Thompson, an MW and whizz kid at marketing - rounds this team off.

It's been a while since we last headlined Sauvignon Blanc as the hottest label in a stable. Consumers have gravitated towards a Sancerre instead of the general Kiwi interpretation of the grape. So heavy is demand for Sancerre from a macro global perspective, that there is a genuine shortage for wines from that region.

This has, of course had an inevitable impact on pricing - with ones entry-level Sancerre in Singapore knocking on the door of S$70 per bottle.

This is where Blank Canvas Abstract Three Rows Sauvignon Blanc 2020 @ $45 net comes into the spotlight...

If I was to take my usual meat cleaver to wine descriptors, where Sancerre takes the lead from Sauvignon Blanc is its sense of elevation, nuance and clarity - without sacrificing flavour and purpose. This - in a nutshell - is exactly what Matt and Sophie have achieved here.

There is a full stretch of the whole range also behind the Big Red Button. Blank Canvas has fast become one of the fastest selling brand from the Land of the Long White Cloud and with very good reason...

Chris Williams' Super Premium Geographica Chenin Blanc `20 (WM 96) & Cab Franc `20 (WM 94) - 24 Each

What do you do when you achieve fame and fortune for making an icon SA wine like Meerlust Rubicon and already own your own stellar brand? Well you push the boat out even further and make 2 wines that immediately demanded attention when first released in 2019...

Chris speaks of the ""atmospheric experience of standing in the 1957 Chenin vineyard – perched on the slopes of the Helderberg. To say that this site is blustery and unforgiving is the understatement of the year. You are standing in the very guts of the famed Cape South Easter that contributed to the demise of many a ship over the centuries - trying to reach Asia and Europe via Cape Town.

The tiny bush vines produce a Chenin that is immensely concentrated and pure. It is nothing short of sensational. Its backed up by its kid brother Cabernet Franc - a brilliant expression of Cape Cab Franc done right. Christian Eedes of Winemag describes it as "pitch perfect".

Much is said about South African Cabernet being the red they do best but to my mind its the Cabernet Franc that is both regal and subtle. Masses of trajectory to evolve and also sensationally satisfying right off the bat - especially if its done a drive-by via your wine decanted for a few hours.

It has been written recently that Williams has taken flight in recent years with an arch of success that knows no tether. That comment gets no push-back from me...

Valparaiso's Ultra High Altitude Crianza 2020 (Decanter 95) @ $36 net ... (Ribera del Duero)

Located in the prized Quintana del Pidio (Burgos) sub-region of Ribera del Duero, also known as the Garden of la Ribera and at between 825 to 1,050 meters, you are drinking from what is possibly the most prized of areas within this esteemed region.

It makes sense that one has lofty expectations for their top shelf labels, with Crianza traditionally being the a younger, fresher version of the Mc Daddy brands. You can count on one hand the number of Crianza`s that eclipse the performance of Reserva labels and upwards. I am not suggesting that we are looking at this here, but its very certain that this humbly priced Crianza not only has a following of its own but beats the top shelf guys around the region for ratings.

The trick with exceptional Crianza is to find examples that evoke the spirit of super good Tempranillo yet sing more moderately than the Gran Reserva's in the family.

Valparaiso is not known for doing things by halves and this is no exception. All the oak is new French (70%) and American. This approach sets itself above the pack just there, making the capex in this winemaking assuredly a marginal earner - if at all. A winemaker I know was recently bemoaning the cost of new barrels at north of 40,000 Euros a thrown now. Even the most creative of accountants will battle to shuffle cost centres around well enough to come up with a bottle priced at $36 per bottle.

Its not just the oak. Anybody can throw a bunch of cash at a winery and hope some of it sticks. Its the juice and how they treat it too. Lovingly curated and transferred barrel-to-barrel every six months, you are being seduced by a wine make to the most exacting standards befitting a house of this stature.

The wines are made by the same winemaker as our super-successful Bodegas Franco-Espanolas. (Much already sold out). A 44 year old veteran of the region, Emma Villajos (pictured above) is clearly large and in charge of her craft.

The money shot for me when doing the background research for this note today is when they come down to specific vine age descriptions they merely say "centuries old". They had me at hello...

Sardus Pater (Sardinia) - The Carignan Specialist with Ancient Vines ...

A friend writes from Northern Italy - where he endures the odious task of spending several months a year, that the price of Brunello has become so crazy, even the crypto kids are pushing back. This trend kicked off in Piedmont some years ago when the price of Burgundy was starting to give fans nose bleeds and they decided that there was actually a price level at which the bang no longer matched the buck....

This got me thinking about what has happened in Sicily, relative to its neighbour Sardinia. There was a time when ones basic bottle of Sicilian red, even from the slopes of Mnt Etna cost about as much the accompanying pizza. Every year now sees an ever-widening pricing differential between these two little islands.

I personally hope this will endure for as long as I can open a bottle of wine, because there is little doubt in my mind that if I was told to pick my desert island bottle of Carignan, it would be from Sardinia. There is something magical about its glassy, quartzite soils with all the empathy of a mother-in-law`s attitude when you bring your date home at 3 am without her shoes. Its from this insanely inhospitable place that Carignan thrives to its fullest, Oprah-rich glory.

Frankly the biggest challenge is persuading people that these wines are as good as they taste given their price points. There is little doubt that when one looks at repeat buying patterns - Sardus Pater has them coming back for more at a rate that far outstrips most in their price bracket.

Despite the fact that I should be trumpeting the arrival of the 2021`s, I am going to opt instead to urge one to lift whats left of the 2018`s and 2019`s. Multiple years now of cherishing these labels has proven that a couple more years of careful cellaring in our warehouse reveals the true majesty of this grape.
