In the rolling hills of Leiria (between Lisboa and Coimbra), Quinta da Serradinha’s 6 hectares of vines bask in the sun on south-facing slopes of clay-limestone soil, a rich canvas that allows the roots to burrow deep and absorb the unique character of the land. The nearby Atlantic brings cool morning breezes and high rainfall, but summers are hot and dry. This intriguing interplay creates a slow, patient maturation, allowing the grapes to develop a spectrum of flavors while retaining their crisp acidity.

✨ We have 8 of Quinta da Serradinha’s incredible wines, including a magnum 1.5-liter bottle of “2012 Baga e Outras” aromatic blend. See them all in our Porto store or online shop (link in bio). ✨

Esporão's Organic Journey

Friday, October 27th @6:30pm

To make the world a better place, we can't rely solely on small producers and projects. We also need the efforts and commitment of industry leaders who believe that together we can create a better world.

This Friday, we have the pleasure of inviting Esporão to share their story. Esporão is one of the largest wineries in Portugal, and it is also a winery that has transitioned 100% of its crops in the Alentejo and Douro regions under organic certification, totaling 655 hectares of vineyards and 111 hectares of olive groves. This transformation is not only inspiring but it also is a model for others, both big and small producers, to do better.

This Friday, we'll be talking to José Luis Moreira da Silva, the Chief Production Officer, to hear about Esporao’s journey toward sustainable and organic farming methods. We are excited to have the opportunity to hear this unique perspective and help make a positive change together.

Join us on Friday, October 20th, at 18:30 for a VERY special wine tasting event featuring The Organic Wine Agency (OWA) - the dynamic duo of Ana Taborda and Rita Moreira, both attempting to bring a new range of wines to the north of Portugal.

OWA is an exciting and relatively new distributor dedicated to natural, organic, and biodynamic wines. This commitment to quality and minimal intervention in winemaking has made them an exciting new offer here in Porto and the north!

Founded during the pandemic, OWA's mission is to introduce unique and top-quality wines to the market. They focus on artisanal wines with minimal intervention, showcasing small producers who deeply respect the vineyard and the ecosystem. Their portfolio includes exceptional wines from Portugal, Italy, and Spain.

We’re very excited to have them here to learn about what the future of the natural wine scene in Portugal will look like and always to hear a bit about how they are making the world a little better place.

Please join us to explore some remarkable wines and to learn from a couple energetic ladies!

It's finally happening, 2 masterclasses on Vermouth! We are so excited to announce that on the 18th and 22nd of this month, we'll be holding 2 masterclasses about this beverage we love. Anyone who has been to theLAB will know that Ryan is not just passionate about vermouth but has amassed a decent-sized collection of vermouths from the past decades that he loves to talk about and share. You do not want to miss out!

On the 18th, we have Intro to Vermouth, where we will tell the history of this noble beverage, along with helping you to understand how vermouth can become a part of your drinks game at home. Beyond that, we'll share fun ways to drink it and where to buy it, and we'll get to taste at least 7 different examples, including at least one very well-aged vermouth. This "Intro to Vermouth" is perfect for summer when vermouth and soda becomes our daily drink! This intro class is for those who know little about vermouth but want an excellent base to begin your exploration.

Following this, we have a special Masterclass for Professionals on the 22nd at 2 pm. We will go deep into the history of vermouth, how it is made, and the various styles from France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and beyond. We'll speak and talk about serving suggestions both in a cocktail lineup but also how vermouth can be a fantastic drink for pairing with food. During this class, we will also be opening multiple older wines to learn about the aging potential of vermouth. This masterclass packs in everything from our "Intro to Vermouth" plus a stronger focus on serving tips for on-trade professionals.

👉 The links are in our Bio to sign up for both tastings. Each tasting is strictly limited to 16 people, with no exceptions.

Are you searching for a drink that will make you go 'wow'? Look no further than vermouth! This drink has a long and fascinating history, and it's making a comeback in the world of alcoholic beverages today.

Some say that vermouth has always existed, or at least the practice of infusing wine with herbs and spice. But it wasn’t until 1786 that Carpano released the first beverage marketed as “Vermouth” with the sole intent of creating a new aperitif for the market. Based in Torino, Carpano can be said to have launched a thousand ships, as the drink quickly spread throughout Europe with distinctive styles in everywhere it landed.

In fact prior to the 1960's, the “vermouth cocktail” was one of the most consumed beverages around the globe, even most port houses in Portugal had a vermouth production, although its popularity experienced a sharp decline globally due to the rise in hard spirits consumption. After this period of decline it was the in early 2000’s that vermouth started a comeback. This meant new styles and bigger distribution worldwide, but Spanish were the ones who really exploded with a renaissance of new brands. That said here in Portugal, this revival has been much slower.

Fortunately, bartenders and mixologists are rediscovering its complex flavors and using it to add depth and complexity to their drinks. Its iconic flavors make it a versatile ingredient in many classic cocktails, including the Negroni and the Manhattan.

So the next time you're looking to try something different, consider reaching for a bottle of vermouth. You might be surprised with what you find!

28/04/2023

The Douro River is an ancient waterway that's steeped in history. With its 566 miles(895 km) length, it is the third longest river in the Iberian Peninsula after the Tagus and Ebro rivers. It starts as a small stream in the Sierra de Urbión in Spain, bends to the east and makes its way to the west through rolling valleys until it spills into the Atlantic Ocean.

The river is believed to be named after Durius, the Celtic god worshipped by the Lusitani, an ancient tribe who inhabited the region of modern-day Portugal and parts of western Spain during the pre-Roman period. Different sources show that he is represented holding a fishing net, showing his dominion over the waters and the livelihood that the river provides.

Today, the Douro remains a vital source of sustenance, particularly those in wine regions such as Douro, Tras-os-Montes and Tavora-Varosa in Portugal and, Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Toro and Rueda in Spain. It also caused and witnessed many historically important events, such as the Methuen Treaty, which gave encouragement to the port wine business, and the Treaty of Tordesillas dividing colonial rights between Portugal and Spain, which was signed by these waters.

The UNESCO designation of this area as a World Heritage site is a testament to the cultural impact of this river on local communities. Come join us as we explore the rich history and picturesque landscapes of the Douro River!

23/04/2023

Baixo Corgo, located in the heart of Portugal's Douro Valley, is the westernmost and one of the coolest sub-regions of the Douro Valley, with a unique microclimate that sets it apart from Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. While it is true that Baixo Corgo has been associated with wines that lack freshness due to its lower altitude and warmer temperatures, recent years have seen a shift in the way winemakers approach wine production in the region. In fact, many wine experts believe that Baixo Corgo has the potential to produce some of the most interesting and dynamic wines in the Douro Valley.

Fernando Coelho from Quinta de Tourais is among these winemakers who are changing the narrative by producing vibrant, fresh and fun wines using a creative and innovative approach to winemaking. He is so confident in his wines that he even writes "wines with no altitude" on his labels to mock with the outdated myth.

30/03/2023

The cider revolution in Portugal started recently, but the heritage of cider goes back farther than you think. Portugal doesn't typically come to mind when one thinks of cider, as winemaking is more of a prominent industry; However, this is not entirely accurate. In the rural areas of Northern Portugal, cider or 'vinho de maça' was a tradition rooted in the culture but forgotten in time. In Minho, cider was drunk in celebration of the harvest, but the tradition was slowly abandoned. While on the island of Madeira, the tradition of cider making has gone on for centuries. The diversity of apples in these regions shows the importance of the heritage and the re-discovery brought on by the natural cider movement. Some producers who have sustainability as their core value are re-vitalizing this tradition. As the regulations on cider are not as strict as wines, it's easier to play and experiment with, resulting in producers creating an excellent range of treats! 🍎🍏

Sulfites are the hot potato of the wine world. And surprise, surprise- almost every bottle you buy requires to have ‘contains sulfites’ tag, even if it’s the natural kind. Believe it or not, sulfites are actually naturally occuring in the winemaking process. And did you know these 10 things show up with more sulfites than your bottle of red wine?

Dried fruits
French fries
Nuts and raisins
Mayonnaise
Pre-made soup
Packaged meats
Soda
Canned vegetables
Jam
Candies

Also don’t blame them for your headache! You can blame the most deadly poison known to humanity -alcohol- and histamines for that which exists in some of the yummiest snacks such as cheese and cured meats. Yep, the most satisfying joys can cause a little bit of pain, who would have thought?

In 2017, founders of , Frederico and Ricardo journeyed to Mogadouro in Trás-os-Montes, envisioning a project to produce regional wines with traditional techniques. They uncovered vineyards that are between 70 to 100 years old which resulted in exceptional wines. Not only do they produce great wines, they also mentor and assist local farmers and contribute a share of their profits to local foundations. Their most noteworthy initiative is PROJECT BELFO, which in it’s first year worked to save the endangered Miranda donkey. This year they are working to help raise awareness about the importance of bees to the ecosystem. Cheers to them! 🥂

In the northeast corner of Portugal lies the region of Trás-os-Montes (literally: Beyond the mountains), where many vineyards are well over 70 years old and rooted in the beautiful, timeless landscape of the region. The rugged terrain and extreme temperatures have caused both the land and the people to adopt a certain hardiness, which is reflected in the robust red wines that come from grapes such as Tinta Gorda, or Juan Garcia as it's called on the Spanish side of the border.

If you wander through the villages of the region, you may even hear the second official language in Portugal, Mirandese. Some say it's a dying language, but its sound still echoes through the villages. Trás-os-Montes is a place waiting to be discovered, with exciting stories, delicious meat dishes, and great, underrated wines.
