Another week brings another welcome award!

We're very happy to hear that The Hearach single malt whisky has collected GOLD at the London Spirits Competition 2024.

This new award complements our recent gold at the Berlin International Spirits Competition last month.

Their judges noted the whisky exhibited..."light fruity notes on the nose, medium peatiness, and an appearance reminiscent of orange candy and chamomile with sweet elements. On the palate, expect butterscotch, citrus, and a hint of smoke.”

Our thanks to the distillers, blenders, and cask team for all their hard work in making this beautiful island dram.

How about a little Isle of Harris Gin cocktail recipe to start the weekend off nicely...

Recently, some of our team were delighted to be invited to the Royal Hotel in Stornoway to taste some of their new up-coming Isle of Harris Gin cocktail menu ideas. Thanks to mixologist Harry Smith for creating such a fantastic variety of cocktails for us to sample. Delicious!

The menu is yet to be finalised but the taste test was enough to recommend this as a must try if you plan on visiting Stornoway over the summer.

Here's a little sneak-peak of the ingredients within their 'Through the Grapevine' cocktail. Slàinte!

The traditional Scottish Quaich
The Quaich was originally used to welcome guests and visitors and was a token of friendship, trust and warmth. Clan Chiefs would often use Quaichs to show another clan, perhaps a rival clan, that they were forming a bond or special relationship.
The quaich's unique handles, or lugs (a Scottish term for 'ears', have become a symbol of trust between fellow drinkers. After all, if a clansman were to pass the quaich to another man, it would require both he and the receiver to use both hands. As a result, both drinkers would be incapable of holding any weapons and the two would rely on trusting one another not to take advantage of this weakness.

quiach /kwex/ pronounced: kw-ay-ch derived from Gaelic cuach 'cup'

It is hard to guess from its appearance exactly what a quaich is. Indeed, you'd be forgiven for thinking that it was a small decorative bowl with little other purpose, beyond being aesthetically pleasing. In fact, the quaich has a much more interesting beginning than that of a posh ornament.

A traditional Scottish drinking vessel, and its name derives from Gaelic cuach simply meaning 'cup'. However, the quaich was not used for just any drink. The quaich was reserved for a good old dram of whisky or brandy!
Quaichs today are mostly made in pewter, or sometimes solid silver or silver plate. But many other materials are possible, including wood or even oxhorn. They are typically decorated with traditional designs such as Celtic knotwork, or perhaps emblazoned with a clan crest or other motif. It's largely a matter of taste, or a question of what you are celebrating. Many can also be engraved for special occasions.

The Quaich was for centuries, a domestic utensil which originated in the west highlands of Scotland. It was the dish from which the Scott supped his porridge and drank his ale.
Quaich is derived from the Gaelic ‘Cuach’ which, in turn derives from low Latin, ‘Caucus’ - A Drinking Cup. These drinking cups were very widely used in convenanting times and are mentioned in the old Jacobite song.
“Then let the flowing Quaich go round and boldly let pibroch sound til every Glen and rock resound the name o’ Royal Charlie. Welcome Charlie, o’ er the main, our hielands are a’ your ain. Welcome to our isle again, welcome Royal Charlie.”
The Quaich became a traditional toasting cup of welcome in Scotland or even good wishes upon farewell or parting. Surviving the centuries and mystique of history it is truly Scotland’s cup of friendship.
