The first sip of Arvelé will delight aficionados of Freisa. Only the best lots of Freisa go into this selection, and it then spends 8 months in small barrels of second pass. The consequent slow oxidation and absorption of compounds from the oak have softened the tannins, deepened its rich ruby tonality, and brought out of those aromas traditional to Freisa. Wild berry fruit, raspberry, and subtle hints of blackberry and rose petals meld appealingly into subtle notes of vanilla and to***co leaf. The palate is crisp and fresh, yet at the same time mouthfilling and velvety.

Passito as many of you know means ‘raisin’, it is a sweet wine made from semi-dried grapes. What is in this beautiful 375ml bottle is made from the rare and powerful Sagrantino grape variety. Sagrantino is one of the most tannic grape varieties in the world. It may then not surprise that this sweet wine’s finish isn’t very sweet.

Fiammetta Inga was a pioneer by nature and in organic wine. In the early 70s Fiammetta divorced her husband and left Milan to look for her farm. She eventually found it on the border of Tuscany and Umbria in Castiglione del Trasimeno. Fiammetta did not plan on being a winemaker.. that too was organic. When she brought the grapes to the market to sell as she did with her other farm produce.. and found how little people would pay her for the grapes, she became heated and promptly took the grapes back to the farm declaring she would use them to make her own wine! And she did, at first the wine was..well shall we say not good.. She didn’t know how to make wine and the neighbors with knowledge pitched in.. The turning point: Fiammetta crossed paths with and began making wine with the well reputed oenologist Jean Natoli and the wines were not only good.. but also began winning awards.

The Peri family has been making wine since 1946 and for a good portion of that time has been making a line of traditional method sparkling wines called Talento wines..and they know what they are doing.

After tasting these vintages this past April, I felt inspired to poetry.. but there was no time for poetry.. after my meeting w/ I was rushing off to the next appt and across the fairground..I felt so haunted by the memories of these 2 remarkable wines I wished that I was running with someone so that I could let them escape into the world with words!

Quattr’Ore Rosato

Hailing from the picturesque rolling hills of Castenedolo, Lombardia, in the not recent past, the summer vacation destination of monarchs and wealthy families of Italy.

Quattro’Ore translates to ‘four hours’ referencing the time the grape juice and grape skins that make this special Rosato are in contact. Just 4 hours of skin contact and look at the colour! Gorgeous.

100% Marzemino Quattr’Ore is a med bodied layered satiating rosé. It whispers of wild Cstrawberries, currants, violets, and hints of tomato leaf and herb… all of which combine beautifully on the palate.. lovingly balanced acidity and tannin.. elegant from scent to swallow.. with a generous and graceful flourish of a finish.

Today we are going to Italy to discover an winery run by 2 women, Claudia and Giulia.

I'm not usually a fan of Pinot Grigio.
Not because it's bad but simply because it's usually treated like a Melon de Bourgogne or a Picpoul and that's sad given the potential of the grape.
But it was all before I met Agata.
On the nose, apple, white peach, citrus and exotic fruits.
In the mouth it's fresh, lively and fruity with elegance.
Agata was able to charm me, I found the Pinot Gris behind this apparent lightness. Agata is a woman.. no longer a girl..

Benazzoli Dafne Bardolino DOC (2022)$26/btl

Winemaker would say: ‘ I would not let you go without having first tasted a glass of our Dafne Bardolino. I love it because it is a wine suitable for so many occasions. It is a delicate wine, almost shy, but once you become friends, she will reveal all of her secrets. Serve slightly fresh with fish dishes, she will not disappoint!’

By slightly fresh Claudia is referring to chilling the wine before serving. It is customary to chill Bardolino before serving w/ the fish dishes year round. In the Veneto region it is common practice to chill Bardolino in the warm seasons prior to serving. It is lovely at room temperature, and chilled.

She is a young woman..who wants to grow up yet at the same time is afraid to lose her light-heartedness.

According to 80% of people select wine based on the label. While it is true that we are visual creatures, we should refrain from judging books by their covers, shouldn’t we?

Many of you are familiar with the beautiful 𝐵𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑧𝑧𝑜𝑙𝑖 𝑆𝑜𝑔𝑛𝑖 𝑑𝑖 𝐷𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑎 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠 and their eye-catching labels.

In this instance, the objective wasn’t to make the wine labels more appealing for us, but rather to convey a story.. a feeling reminiscent of the wine, where it comes from, and the people behind.

Not to worry I will save you from reading the whole book and give you the Coles Notes version.

The Benazzoli sisters are the fourth generation of wine makers in the Benazzoli family. They are the first generation to bottle their wine under their own name. They started in 2006. It wasn’t until several years later that they generated a sufficient amount of revenue to justify re-branding and in re-branding, their objectives were to create a visual that was representative of those things I mentioned, above…

After a few unsuccessful collaborations with graphic designers.. it was a friend of Claudia Benazzoli’s that upon hearing of their frilly froufrou disappointing results, gently suggested that perhaps he could work with them to come up with some ideas and illustrations. That friend is in pic 1 of

Together the Benazzoli sisters and Luca created the Sogni di Donna characters you have become familiar with: Agata, Tecla, Dafne, Giava and Minerva.

Much thought is behind these characters, their shapes, the elements and their names. You can read more via a link in the bio or in our next Newsletter coming out later this week.
