Hi, Im Becca! I live a few blocks away from where I am opening a small, local grocery store. I saw a vacancy in our community for store like this and elected myself to fill the role of Friendly Neighborhood Grocery Store Lady. Its been a wild ride, honestly. I am absoultly transformed as a person by the experiances Ive had in holding this title. If I told you "Everything was easy, never had a single problem" I would be lying. But if i said "Im exactly where I belong in life and I wouldnt change a thing!" I would be telling you the truth.

More truth, I need your help! Goodfortune Market had a MASSIVE delay in our Small Business Administration funding. We're back on track now, phew, but the cost of doing nothing for over three months took a lot out of bank account. What would a store like this do for you? Would a place to purchase fresh, local foods close to home be something you would champion? Would you concider helping supporting Goodfortune Market in our time of need?

What do you dream of making?

For me, I dream of making a warm, sunny place to buy fresh, quality foods. A place close to home I could walk to a few times a week to buy local produce, fresh bread, and cup of coffee. A place where people know my name and remember my birthday. The familiar corner store where a friendly dog sits patiently outside waiting to receive a treat for being good. I dream of a place that feels like home. A place that provides my family and loved ones with all the things we need to keep my home filled with delicious aromas, and the sound of laughter as people gather around a crowed table.

I want to share this dream with you. Because if I have the good fortune to build something like this, you should have the good fortune of being a part of this with me.

Welcome to the Goodfortune Family. Good food, good folks, Goodfortune Market.

Small neighborhood markets with direct to farm relationships are good for Georgia’s economy and ecology. Big box store with centralized distribution models present weaknesses not only in their ability to maintain the food supply chain in adverse conditions (like a pandemic). But furthermore a majority of each dollar you spend in big box stores, leaves the state immediately and does not support our local economy. Most centralized distribution centers lack relevant traceability of food items. Not to mention most local farmers are unable to sell goods through these avenues, cutting off local farmers from accessing urban neighborhoods in their own regions. A network of small local markets with direct relationships with farmers strengthens our food supply chain as well as creates revenue streams to circulate wealth within our own community. Goodfortune = Good for the economy!

Inside walls is a whole world of fun things. Building this store from scratch is such a fun and rewarding process. Heres a look at the guts of a grocery store. It wont be too much longer before this view will be very different. Show your support for a locally owned, fresh food store https://gofund.me/a2fc3ea1

We are so thankful for everyone who has shown support so far! we have an amazing community of folks who are as excited as we are to have a food store coming to Waters Ave. Even if you cant contribute financially today, you can still help out. Have a personal conversation with someone near you about how access to fresh food would make your community stronger. The more light we shine on this idea, the more it can grow.

Learning about our history can be a very important part of planning for the future. In an effort to learn more about our location and what types of business came before us, I started a research project! If you are interested in supporting a woman owned grocery store, check out our GoFundMe https://gofund.me/a2fc3ea1
I knew about a few grocery's on Waters Ave in the 1930's, including Rogers Store and DeLoach Grocery. It was Deloach Grocery that was located at 2415 Waters, which is the same building, even though my current address is 2413. A closer look at the Sanborn Insurance Map 1916 shows what those address looked.
"Wm. G (Julia) DeLoach" in the Pettus Savannah Directories with the occupation listed as "Grocer 2415 Waters" DeLoach Grocery was in business throughout the Great Depression and WWII.
Some surprises came when I looked closely at the Sanborn Insurance Map, when I saw that the Roger's Store was located across the street at 2417 Waters Ave, which is now the art studio of (for anyone I told it was Roger's Store, I now stand corrected!)
