Did you know that Arbois’ Domaine de l’Octavin was formerly named Opus Vinum, until Napa Valley’s Opus One sent them a threatening ‘cease and desist’ letter? Seems like Opus One, owned by $42billion market cap Constellation Brands & Bordeaux’ Baron de Rothschild, thought there might be some consumer confusion between a small Jura grower that farms with plant-based sprays like stinging nettle, dandelion extract and common horsetail while shunning the use of SO2, and OPUS ONE’s completely controlled, technology-dominant ~30,000 case production of something more akin to a manufactured beverage. Sorta like Coca Cola going after your local cold-pressed juice bar, imo. How anyone could compare Octavin’s playful Gnome labels with the staid, self-exalting label of OPUS One is beyond me. In any event, Octavin lives on in the hearts & souls of natural wine lovers across the world…while you can probably find OPUS in most beverage chains & even grocery stores where the idea of finding a bottle of Octavin ‘pur jus’ is even sillier than a brand’s conceit.

Saturday night is Bistro nite. Beaujolais is also a classic, and this one by Bojo native Thibault Ducroux has the requisite snap & crunch, but with body & depth usually found at a higher Cru level. Label buyers don’t like comparing Beaujolais to Burgundy, but basic Red Burg at twice the price rarely delivers this much quality & pleasure. The beauty of natural wine on overdrive…

Peter Lauer Barrels 25, 12, 15 & X. Not Lauer’s entire stylistic range, but hey, this is naples…All different yet quintessential Saar Valley Rieslings, clean as steel, with that hallmark tension between richness and animating acidity, and unsurpassed finesse & balance. It’s also Hallo Eve so let’s put our white Burgundy suit on. If only the Saar/Mosel & Rheingau had a version of Burgundy’s Chevaliers du Tastevin (chevaliers des slate?), the new rich might be slurpin’ to a more diverse tune…But the bottles are flutey so it ain’t happening (yet). Hey this is naples…
*Barrel X: platonic ideal of what off-dry Saar Riesling should taste like, at a superb Bourgogne blanc level. Fruit, acidity & spice. ADULT lemonade in a manner of Saar-speak.
*Barrel 25 Ayler Trocken: Old school Saar from 2 sites backside of the Ayl village. Flowery, spicy w/ good cut, clarity & vigor. ‘X’ gone dry?
*Barrel 12 Unterstenberg: Literally, ‘under the mountain’, from the bottom slope of Ayler Kupp. A vigorous site, w/ low residual sugar, a ‘schmalzy, glycerin mid-palate’ defined & bracketed by the acidity’s cut and lift. Net, one of the broadest & most power-laden of Lauer’s dry wines.
*Barrel 15 Stirn: Literally, the top 1/3 or ‘forehead’ of the Kupp mountain, & the exact opposite of Unterstenberg 300 feet down slope. Think Chevalier Montrachet’s exposure & thinner soils for Stirn… versus Batard’s deeper soils & pronounced vigor for Unterstenberg. One of the most nervous, linear and soaring of Lauer’s wines. Razor sharp, dense & gritty… off-dry, but with an extraordinary hi acid/low pH offset. Paired with Unterstenberg, a master class in terroir, courtesy of nature, Florian Lauer & importer Vom Boden.

One of my favorite 🍇 in zee world. Lacy, spacey (in an ethereal sort a way) & subtly racy. Piquant berries w that dance of white pepper. Like a good red Pinot w attitude… never enuf Pineau d’Aunis so enjoy like a phantom …
Why on terra firma should a Cinsault taste like very good Burgundy? Delicacy with verve, silk without toying w/ oak. And those wild red fruited scents infused w/ forest & underbrush. Proof positive that California & 12.3 abv can more than mutually sing …
