Altos Las Hormigas, Malbec Appellation Gualtallary,
Mendoza, Argentina 2018 ($44.99)

"The site-specific 2018 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary comes from specific soils, two plots that they believe transmit the maximum expression of limestone to Malbec, giving a structured wine with fine-grained tannins but a little wild. The vines are on stony and gravelly soils with a high percentage of limestone and sand with around 3% clay at 1,300 meters in altitude. The grapes fermented in small concrete vats with indigenous yeasts at some 25 degrees Celsius for 15 days. It matured in untoasted 3,500-liter French oak foudres for 18 months and no less than 12 months in bottle. This comes from sandy soils and very low yields that give it chalkier tannins and a savage way. This has a slightly rustic touch, vertical and with some lightness. There's always a fresh touch of aromatic herbs (thyme and rockrose), with a textured palate and very tasty and clean flavors in the finish." -Luis Gutiérrez

CLIO
Jumilla, Spain 2021
$49.99

Clio is made from 70-80 year old vines, very low-yield Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards approximately 2,300 feet in elevation. Planted in rocky limestone and sand soils in a hot, dry climate that encourages ripening of concentrated and complex berries. Fermented in stainless steel and, aged in French and American Oak for 23 months.
Clio is a plush and velvety wine with serious concentration and a long finish.

"The 2021 Clio is ripe and heady with 16% alcohol and generous oak. It's faithful to the house style, but like many other wines from the 2021 vintage from the Gil family, this also came through as fresher and more balanced than the 2020 counterpart. It has a full-bodied palate with abundant but finer tannins. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2023." - Luis Gutiérrez

"Husband and wife team Sara Pérez and René Barbier are the children of two of the great pioneers of the Priorat D.O., Josep Lluís Pérez of Mas Martinet and René Barbier of Clos Mogador. René and Sara have taken the goddess as their inspiration for this project. One of their stated goals is “to interpret femininity through a bottle of wine”. These are incredibly elegant, refined, sensual expressions of Montsant, with restrained alcohol levels and tremendous texture."

With the price of Napa Cabernet rising, Paso Robles Vineyard and Hearst Ranch Winery are stepping in to fill the void, producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon that doesn't break the bank.

Hearst Ranch "Bunk House" Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles 2021 $31.99

"Dried cherry, cola, and baking-spice aromas make for a clean and well-integrated nose on this bottling. Ample tannins frame the ripe fruit, dried meat, and graphite flavors, as acidity lingers into the finish."

Who says great wines have to be expensive?

The winemakers at Colene Clemens Vineyards are dedicated to the pursuit of the "perfect" Pinot Noir - that illusory, if unattainable, holy grail of winemaking. Their Dopp Creek Pinot Noir is the perfect wine to accompany a weeknight meal or sip and savor on its own.

Incredible Single Vineyard Malbec!

Zuccardi, Finca Canal Uco, Malbec, Paraje Altamira, Mendoza, Argentina 2019 ($118.99)

"The 2019 Malbec Finca Canal Uco hails from Uco Valley and was made in concrete vats. Intense purple in hue. The nose, initially shy, grows increasingly nuanced and intense with time in the glass. It presents notes of cherry, plum, thyme and hints of bay leaf, violet, lavender and other herbs accompanied by an unusual whiff of pink grapefruit." - Joaquin Hidalgo

It's ! Celebrate by picking up one (or all three!) of these varied and valued examples, chosen by our spirit buyer Everett.

Scroll down to learn more about Vermouth, or skip to the 🔸 for tasting notes.

- - - - -

"While most of the vermouth consumed is seen as a simple, standard ingredient for cocktails," Everett says, "there are many finer examples that work well on their own, with a splash of soda, or in another simple preparation."

Vermouth is a type of aromatized wine, which means it's infused with additives such bittering agents, sweeteners, tree resin and any number of other additions.

Vermouth as we know it can be traced back to 16th century Germany, where they created medicinal beverages by flavoring wines with Wermut, the German word for wormwood. (The name vermouth comes from the French pronunciation of Wermut!)

🔸Carpano is most often cited as the inventor of sweet vermouth in 1768, and the company still produces its Antica Formula to this day.

Today, there are many styles and producers around the world, but the two most common are red and sweet or clear and dry. While many vermouths are made with neutral wines that don’t provide much character, we do offer a few that are quite different.

🔸Gonzalez Byass USA Extra Dry Vermouth is made from a dry, Fino Sherry base, which gives it an added complexity and the characteristic nose of sherry.

🔸Vermú La Fuerza is a red vermouth made in Argentina with Malbec grapes from Mendoza, which brings extra complexity and a vinous character.

🥃 High N' Wicked No. 2 “The Wild Rover” Single Malt Irish Whiskey is double-cask matured, triple distilled and finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.

🔸 Released at cask strength, each hand-numbered bottle offers rich, complex aromas of apples, pears and fig that evolve into toffee and pie crust and round out with apple butter, baking spice and a hint of wildflower honey.

🔸 On the palate it is deceptively smooth and delightfully layered, with notes of Dutch apple pie, caramelized pears, brown butter, fig jam and brioche with honey.

In 1984, we founded Wines of America. At the time, we specialized in domestic wines. As we learned from our customers and our expertise grew, we began adding new regions to our repertoire.

Nearly 40 years later, our shop has expanded to carry wines, spirits and accessories from all over the world, but our philosophy is the same: to make wine accessible and fun, to educate and assist however we can, and to continue broadening and improving our selection with all the best our world has to offer.

Heading out with your Valentine? Marcus suggests looking for a wine with slightly lower alcohol content, allowing the nuanced flavors of your meal to shine through AND letting you and your date enjoy a few glasses while still being present for a special evening.

For BYOB, takeout or home-cooked meals, pick up a bottle of 🍾 Racines Pinot Noir St. Rita Hill. Scoring a 94 from Decanter, this wine is meaty, dense and reminiscent of a damp forest, with a balanced, dark-fruited, saline-heavy finish.

Serving Houston for 35 Years

In 1987, owner Scott Spencer opened Wines of America on Houston’s South Shepherd. More than 35 years later, our name and the scope of our inventory has changed to include regions worldwide, but the goal of independently-owned-and-operated Houston Wine Merchant stays the same; to educate and make wine more approachable to Houston through our knowledgeable team, complimentary tastings and customer service that goes above and beyond the call.

Each member of our team specializes in different regions when it comes to wine and spirits. We’ve spent years learning, exploring and polishing our knowledge of these areas and their offerings; it’s one of the things that makes our selection so unique and enables our team to better offer assistance and expertise. Ask us a question, start a conversation or request a recommendation. We love to talk about our greatest passion, and we’ll never stop learning and sharing about the wonderful world of wine.
