Today is the Sami National Day!

Sami are indigenous people from the northernmost parts of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. Today the total population is estimated at about 80,000 in these four countries. The Sami are best known for semi-nomadic reindeer herding, but they are also coastal fishers, sheep herders, and fur trapper.

The colorful Sami clothes are called Gakti, and they are worn both while working and in ceremonial contexts, particularly when herding reindeer. The colors of the official Sami flag, inaugurated in 1986, come from this clothing.

Sweden celebrates a holiday on Feb. 14 called Alla Hjärtans Dag, while Denmark and Norway call the holiday Valentinsdag. In Sweden, Alla Hjärtans Dag means “All Hearts Day,” which is a day for sharing sweet pastries and candies. We have lots of candy and chocolate too!!! Make sure to shop with us! Tack

Today in Sweden is 3 Kings day. Each year, Sweden celebrates Epiphany tretton dagar efter jul, or “thirteen days after Christmas,” which falls on January 6th. This is also where the holiday gets its other name, Trettondedag Jul.

About “By the Fire”
The first English publication of Sámi folktales from Scandinavia collected and illustrated in the early twentieth century. Although versions of tales about wizards and magical reindeer from northern Scandinavia are found in European folk and fairytale collections, stories told by the indigenous Nordic Sámi themselves are rare in English translation.
