Clay's Beer Pick of the Week Aug 24

This week I am reviewing another beer from The Veil

Imaginary Love IPA
6.5 ABV No IBU Clay's beer meter ( 91 out of 100 )

Had a yellowish color and a very cloudy consistency. There was a quarter inch of creamy, long-lasting head. Fantastic lacing.

A solid aroma of dank hops, malt, citrus fruit, an earthy quality, pine, and some tropical fruit.

Tasted of a small amount of malt (mostly in the finish), a light earthy quality (not a big component), a good shot of dank hops, light pine notes, some citrus (tangerines), and a little tropical fruit (mango). This is a deeper, earthier flavor than some IPAs, but it manages to work pretty well. Tasty stuff.

A well-carbonated beer with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

Overall, a sharp and tasty IPA. Worth a look.

Clay's Beer Pick of the Week Aug 17

This weeks pick is from a new brewery, The Veil Brewing Co.

Supernatural Creature
8.0 ABV No IBU Clay's beer meter ( 92 out of 100 )

Pours an opaque, burnt sunflower orange body capped with a finger and a half of fluffy, white foam; great head retention leaves a thin layer of cap, a moderate, frothy collar, and myriad soapy, webby/spotty lacing spread around the walls of the glass.

Aroma features an initial orange marmalade intensity cut with a hint of lemon and developing a Simcoe-level stank (despite not being involved in the hop bill), highlighting grassy spice, black peppercorn husk, semi-sweet bay leaf, and a tinge of oregano into the back end as citric impressions of clementine and red grapefruit close the bouquet.

Taste opens with forward notes of orange tang into spent-citrus undertones of musty lemon, with red grapefruit and overripe cantaloupe encompassing the mid-palate and a sweet malt/herbal finish with an edge of resinous, almost syrupy tropical fruit saturation.

Mouthfeel offers a medium-light body and a delicately fluffy, moderate carbonation; a juicy, bright twang glazes the entirety of the palate as an intermittent bitterness presents through an increasingly taut back end; the finish is bright and sports a fleeting hop acidity lingering past the swallow.

Clay's Beer Pick of the Week Aug 10

This weeks pick is another one From Hop Butcher Brewing !

Blazed Orange Milkshake
7.5 ABV No IBU Clay's beer meter ( 88 out of 100 )

Pours a hazy, darker yellow orange, with a two inch head of creamy foam with good retention and a decent amount of foamy lacing. Aromas of vanilla, orange, light malt, a creamy aroma. Flavors of vanilla, orange, malt, a little grassy and dank, a decent amount of hop bitterness mostly on the finish. Smooth, creamy, a very good lighter body, well carbonated.

Straightforward and concise- vanilla and orange. Not all that sweet, but I enjoyed the hop bitterness to balance it a bit. Well worth a purchase.

This weeks pick is a Dbl Hazy from Hop Butcher For The World

Megabite
7.5 ABV No IBU Clay's beer meter ( 91 out of 100 )

Uniformly hazy milky yellow-orange pour with fantastic creamy two plus fingers of white head.
Green leafy hops hit the nose from the head - piney, grapefruit peel but as warms increasingly mix of ripe orange, mango, peach, and pineapple juice on the back of a grainy, bready malt base.
Taste starts with the ripe citrus and mango sweetness, pineapple admixed with soft bready malt and at the back the leafy hop green bitters and a bit of grapefruit pith.
Medium full mouth feel - creamy with fine carbonation and smooth bittersweet finish.

Clay's Beer Pick of the Week July 27

This weeks pick is really special, it's this years Barrel Aged Old Rasputin!

Old Rasputin B/A XVII
12.1 ABV 38 IBU Clay's beer meter ( 95 out of 100 )

Pours a med frothy brown head with good retention, good lacing, decent legs, inky jet black color

Nose is pretty nice, dark chocolate, cocoa, some vanilla barrel and bourbon soaked wood, baking spices, lots of smooth oak and barrel characters, little fudgey, caramel, light roast, touch of sweet candy, very mild dark fruits

Taste is even better, loads of barrel characters, bourbon and sweet barrel juice, vanilla and a little buttery oak, toasted oak, baking spices, and even some coconut, dark chocolate and cocoa with the baking spices, caramel, a bit of roast and coffee notes but not much, smooth alcohol with a little heat, cocoa powder as it warms, with a mild bitterness, drier finish with more raw cocoa that hasn't been melted yet, with some creamy milk chocolate and bourbon vanilla lingering

Mouth is fuller bod, rich chewy and a little creamy, thick, light warming alcohol, med to a bit lighter foamy carb

Overall this was the best of the Old Rasputin Anniversaries yet, base beer is always awesome, but this time loads of barrel and bourbon,

Clay's Beer Pick of the Week June 22

This weeks pick is from one of my all time favorite breweries, Great Notion. These guys don't know how to make a bad beer!

Strawberry Shortcake
6.0 ABV 5 IBU Clay's beer meter ( 95 out of 100 )

Pours a slightly murky orange/ reddish purple. Nice head on it and plenty of bubbles. the nose is freeze dried strawberries, actual shortcake (nice work on the mash here), and just some light clean acidity, very balanced it seems, summery as they come, and natural on the vanilla without it being overdone. the flavor follows, strawberries all through it, bold but still very natural, and not so sweet that it tastes like berry candy. vanilla in support, also highly authentic, and the fuller cereal grain base makes it drink a little more cakey, so this really does play like the dessert. I like the little accent of citrus in the lactic profile, its not super sour, and i think the robustness of the fruit is what makes it, good concept and good ex*****on. always ahead of the field in terms of quality, this is really good. rad art too!

Duvel
8.5 ABV 33 IBU Clay's beer meter ( 93 out of 100 )

Pours a beautiful clear gold, with a fantastic foamy four-finger pale white head. Lacing is excellent.
Smell is freshly-baked bread, sweet herbal notes, and some sort of spice - definitely clove & coriander.
Taste is lemon peel, graham cracker, and clove. Ye**ty rolls, with coriander & light stone fruit. Evolves into notes of golden delicious peel & honey. Extremely balanced, and finishes dry - and spicy.
Medium-bodied, with plenty of carbonation. On the drier end of things. More drinkable than you'd expect. Refreshing.
An absolute delight. Well-balanced, and complex throughout - yet doesn't get overbearing at all. Fantastic for summer.

Clay's Beer Pick of the Week June 08

I was out of the office last week but back with a new review this week from Hop Valley Brewing!

Stash Panda
6.5 ABV 50 IBU Clay's beer meter ( 87 out of 100 )

Not surprisingly this hazy IPA has poured a very hazy golden-peach colored body beneath a finger's width of white foam. A good amount of particulate is visible in suspension. The aroma is citrusy with a clear note of grapefruit so I guess the grapefruit peel they added did its job. Let's see what it did to the taste... yep, it's definitely there as well. The malt is sweetish, bready, and wheaty. It's got a touch of acidity to it which helps to amplify the grapefruit flavor. It's tropical beyond that with some peach, orange, and passionfruit. A stiff bitterness runs through it and it finishes mainly dry with the help of the light acidity. Some grapefruit and pine lingers. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and crisp.

Clay's Beer Pick of the Week May 25

This weeks pick is another beer in the Little Thing line from Sierra Nevada, I have reviewed Hazy Little Thing, Wild Little Thing and now, Big Little Thing, this is the Imperial Hazy in the series.

Big Little Thing
9.0 ABV 45 IBU Clay's beer meter ( 91 out of 100 )

Pours a lightly hazy, medium coppery amber with a two finger white head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of lightly caramel and pale malt, citrus and tropical fruit hops, orange, grapefruit, lemon and light mixed tropical fruit. Flavor is pale malt, citrus, lightly piney and tropical fruit hops, grapefruit, orange, lemon, mixed tropical and light stone fruit. Pleasantly bitter finish with citrus rind and fleeting fruit esters. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A mixed bag kind of IPA, with solid West Coast citrus and hints of pine, but also some light mixed tropical fruit character as well as hints of light stone fruit. I like these hybrid IPAs, as the fruitiness of the NE hazies is boring quickly for me, but the addition of some citrus and/or pine with moderate bitterness adds a lot of interest. The malt leans to pale ale, but is substantial enough for this big IPA. I like the hop bill, a bit busy, but nice development of fruit flavors throughout the taste. Won't kick Hoptimum off my top shelf, but quite enjoyable.

Clay's Beer Pick of the Week May 18

This weeks pick is another great offering from Bottle Logic
For this refreshing stunner, the Bottle Logic crew started with an extra dry base brewed with rice for a sip as smooth and clean as ice. But, in an inspired twist, they swapped traditional Pilsner malts in favor of a dark, roasted malt bill to achieve a deeper, darker appearance and refreshing yet rich, malty flavor with a nutty-sweet palate, and dry, rounded finish. The result is like a cross between a Rice Lager and a Schwarzbier.

Hanamachi Black
5.5 ABV 25 IBU Clay's beer meter ( 91 out of 100 )

Pours a deep brown color - darker than amber I would say. Firm rocky light brown head with good retention. Aroma's of caramel malt, some hops and a bit of red fruit. Retronasal follows this, perhaps some bitterness as well. Flavor is light moderate bitter with light caramel malty sweetness. Normal body, not too thin. The Rice base keeps it light and the malts really do add some rich depth. Finishes with moderate bitterness. Very pleasant and drinkable, would definitely go back to this again.

This weeks pick is from Samuel Smith Brewery in England
Organic Apricot Ale
ABV 5.1 No IBU Clay's beer meter ( 88 out of 100 )
Pours a slightly hazed mellow yellow gold body with a thick and billowing frothy white foam head that has moderate retention and leaves occasional lacing as it settles to a murky cap with defined halo. pretty looking brew!
Aroma is a mild funk with an easy floral sweetness; apricot is obviously present, but so is honey crisp and peach and something akin to white grape must
Taste follows the nose pretty straight forward but really ups the vibrancy. while it very much so has a cider-like sense to it, it also has a slightly earthy note to it, juicy and tart throughout.
Mouthfeel: moderately high carbonation and medium-light body. it's pillowy with a few sharper prickles here and there. juicy, fresh, and clean feeling with a crisp finish and a tartly sweet aftertaste that sticks

Three on the tree
4.8 ABV 35 IBU Clay's beer meter ( 93 out of 100 )

Poured a very lightly hazy, yellow-orange color, with a 1.5 finger off white head which dissipated into a thin cap
Strong note of sweet and juicy nectarines, with a hint of malt hiding in there
Fresh sweet nectarine hits first. Followed by a sweet bread note, with bitter hops. The finish is mostly more nectarine with a tiny hint of malt
Mouthfeel is light-med body with a clean finish

This weeks pick is from Hoof Hearted brewery!

$120 Nachos
12.0 ABV No IBU Clay's beer meter ( 88 out of 100 )

Very attractive hazy IPA: thick but not quite opaque. Orange body with excellent head production and lacing, and good retention.

Really bright and juicy aroma: orange, grapefruit, lemon, papaya, oregano, cream, mango. Orange creamsicle definitely comes to mind.

What does a 12% ABV IIIPA taste like? Probably exactly what you expect: sweet, thick, creamy, and also impressively juicy. It's remarkably smooth; early beers of this potency couldn't hide the alcohol. This one manages to - at least somewhat.
The orange creamsicle comparison continues, along with melon, mango, and papaya.

Rigor Mortis Abt
Abbey style Quad Brown Ale
10.5 ABV IBU N/A Clay's beer meter ( 91 out of 100 )

Pours a murky reddish amber, with a short head and some soapy lacing. Active carbonation. Aromas of cherries, plums, malt, dates, figs, raisins, grapes, toffee, light caramel and brown sugar. Smells pretty good. The taste is mostly similar to the nose- malt, plums, dates, figs, caramel, grapes, light wine, less cherries than the nose, some brown sugar. There’s a light bitterness. Mostly smooth, a solid but lighter body for the style, an appropriate amount of carbonation.
Overall, a very solid Abbey Style Quad inspired by the Belgian Trappist Monks that first brewed this style.

Aroma is predominately milk chocolate, caramel and lactose, which emphasizes a creamy vanilla note. A hint of marshmallow and roasted malt to close it out

Sweet milk chocolate up front with some creamy lactose, vanilla and a hint of caramel. Mid-palate gives some roasted notes that pops through the sweetness, as well as a hint of marshmallow. The finish gives more lactose sweetness, with the barrel note coming through, adding some oak on the linger

A hauntingly crushable American Lager w/ Hallertau Blanc hops.

The beer is clear yellow in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that quickly died down, leaving a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
Light aromas of biscuit and toasted malts are present in the nose.
The taste follows the smell and also has a light amount of bitterness.
It feels light- to medium-bodied, clean and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
This lager is easy to drink and doesn't have any "off" aromas or flavors.

Clay's Beer Pick of the Week Feb 23

This weeks pick is another GREAT beer from Abomination!

Midnight Snack-Peanut Butter Pie
14.0 ABV No IBU Clay's beer meter ( 94 out of 100 )

Very good head production; decent retention. No lacing, as once the head is gone, it's completely gone, with no trade of the two fingers of dark brown foam that a moderate pour produced.

Even from feet away, you can smell the richness emanating from the glass. Up close, everything you could possibly expect from the description immediately comes to mind: peanut butter, chocolate, marshmallow, caramel, pie dough. It's so strong and rich that I don't get much that I can definitely say is the beer itself coming through, especially with the chocolate and caramel presence hiding any similar notes from the malt base. Minor notes of toast and red grape.

A touch less thick on the palate than expected; it's actually quite smooth. Still full bodied, but not chewy. Minor alcohol heat, mostly showing on the finish.

Certainly not lacking for flavor! It's sweet, and certainly in pastry stout territory, but it's not overly sweet or cloying; rather, it's rich and decadent. Notes of chocolate and peanut butter, if perhaps predictable, are lovely, along with a bready pie crust-like expression, chewy caramel, red grape, vanilla, and cherry. Some of the flavor, in particular the peanut butter, takes a bit of time to build; it's an experience that develops over the course of the sip, and can't be assessed just within the first few moments.

Tons of peanut butter on the finish, along with a creamy marshmallow kiss. Lightly toasted bread and red grape on the aftertaste.

Super fragrant aroma. From a distance, leafy green hop notes waft over. Up close, the sweet and fruity notes emerge. Mango, strawberry, papaya, cream, orange, lemon.

Flavor follows. Despite all the fruitiness and the moderate to high sweetness (certainly for the style), there's a distinctly green and herbal hop note around the edges. Tasting notes of cream, strawberry, orange creamsicle, vanilla, mango, and papaya.

This weeks pick is a West Coast IPA from Revision Brewing Co.

Emerald Bay IPA
4.6 ABV 42 IBU Clay's beer meter ( 87 out of 100 )

A good example of the West Coast style. Clear gold, minimal head and lacing, slight carbonation. Light citrus scents, a bit of dank pine. Taste is dank, piney, hint of citrus flavor, getting some lemon rind, mango and guava with some slight bitterness on the back end to balance perfectly. Light bodied, minimal alcohol presence, and a slight oily finish.

Clay's Beer Pick of the Week Jan 26

This weeks pick is a brand new World Wide Stout from Dogfish Head, they are taking their already impressive World Wide Stout and adding Coffee, Plant Based Milk and Maple Syrup, yummie !!

Wake Up World Wide Stout
ABV 16-18 IBU 70 Clay's beer meter ( 95 out of 100 )

With a jet black pour and a light creme of froth, Wake Up World Wide Stout catches the eye with espresso-like appearances immediately. Bold aromas of coffee, cream, maple and roast fill the nose with a strong and robust perfume. Sweet on the tongue, the early alignment of caramel, maple, cream and molasses malt impression give the session a strong sugar impact early and often.

With the roasty ale broadening across the middle palate, a sweet and smoky roast character bridges into dark roast coffee, lightly smoldering embers and carbonized sugars for a savory, toasty, woodsy sense of earthiness for both balance and complexity. A light bitterness stems from the coffee flavors and gives the session a finishing balance of hops.

Full bodied and fairly restrained despite its high alcohol content, the session is warming on the palate and in the chest with hints of kahlua and whisky providing a spicy balance in finish. This version of World Wide is a soothing, sweeter and simple tasting stout that mutes the roast, aggression and boldness of the original. Well done!
