Wild Brew, and have come together to brew something in the spirit of honouring tradition, protecting nature and celebrating friendship.

Wild Brew and Alive brewing started our beer journeys in Singapore around about the same time last year. We’ve always admired Alive Brewing for making exciting and enjoyable beers and are super grateful to finally be working on a collaboration project together. The collaboration would not be complete or even possible without Smith Street Taps, who brought us all together.

The story behind brewing this beer begins with wanting to make something traditional from the UK. Alive is driven to honour and deliver traditional beers, with signature Alive finesse, made fresh in Singapore for everyone to enjoy. While for us at Wild Brew, we have been inspired with Singapore’s motivation to update its ‘Red list’ - a classified list of the most threatens species - after almost 13 years since it came out. It is through our beers we hope to raise awareness of the importance of our natural heritage and encourage the public to protect what little and heavily threatened wildlife we have left.

We can’t wait for you to try our new beer! We are so grateful for our swashbuckling trio who believe in this beer and what is stands for. Join us this Thursday 19 August at Smith Street Taps for it’s launch.

Wow! It’s quite disappointing and painful to see such a huge area mistakenly cleared... it’s a good thing it was spotted when it was. Such pockets of woodland are quite rare now and are highly contested for by wildlife, people and development. Fortunately plants always find a way of coming back, and restoration is possible. The lag time before we will see the woodland return to its full strength and function... and the lag time before we see the impact of this massive removal will be significant. I just hope that it doesn’t leave irreversible damage to the wider ecosystem, of which will affect us all.

Large swathes of Kranji woodland along the rail corridor were mistakenly cleared, while the authorities were in the midst of biodiversity impact assessments ...

Hi Subscribeers

here is your October selection of Singapore Craft Beers.

1) Monster Green Lager - RedDot BrewHouse
One of our personal favourites from Red Dot.
Green spirulina infused lager beer. Sparkling green, noble hopped, clean and crisp with hints of malt.
The description according to their website - it strengthens the immune system and eliminates AIDS virus.

2) Weizen - RedDot BrewHouse

A typical German-style wheat beer, Weizen is fruity, spicy, cloudy straw and flavourful. Noble hopped with subtle bitterness. Showcasing vanilla, spice and fruit notes.

3) Alt-O - Düsseldorf Altbier - Binjai Brew
Binjai Brew – named after NTU’s Binjai Hall where three engineering students started their beer-making journey, they have come a long way since.

Altbier is a style of beer brewed in the historical region of Westphalia and around the city of Düsseldorf, Germany. Its name comes from it being top-fermented, an older method than the bottom fermentation of other lager beers. This ale is darker in color, coffee-like bitterness, nutty caramel flavours.

4) Plan B - Passionfruit Milkshake IPA - Binjai Brew
With a thick and heavy mouthfeel, hazy golden hue, balanced passionfruit aroma, this interesting IPA is sure to delight your tastebuds.

5) B Hazy - NE IPA - Binjai Brew
We love the arty design of this can. This New England IPA is medium bodied, hazy golden hue, with intense fruity flavours.

6) Hammerhead West Coast IPA - WildBrew
With a tagline "Drink beer. Save Wildlife." How could anyone refuse?

The HAMMERHEAD WEST COAST IPA is a gentle beast that guarantees your danky, dry, bitter West Coast IPA flavours all in a dangerously easy going, day sipper.

7) Oktoberfest Amber Lager - Brewerkz
This exquisite seasonal brew is a deep amber delight with biscuity bread crust aroma and hazelnut overtones, malty rich palette and a balanced bitter aftertaste.

8) Circuit Breaker - Brewerkz
Celebrate making it through the Circuit Breaker, and hopefully Phase 3 comes soon!
‘Circuit Breaker Hazy Pale Ale’, a new take on traditional pale ale brewed with heaps of oats and wheat for a silky mouthful. With chockfull of juicy, fruity flavours like mango, grapefruit and passionfruit.

9) Rose Oolong Tea Pale Ale - Sunbird Brewing Company
Brewed exclusively in limited batches, a fascinating blend inspired by the versatility of tea leaves. The fragrance of crushed rose buds and rare-orchid infused with exquisite oolong tea leaves handpicked from the Wuyi High Mountain. This harmonises a generous fruity and rose perfume with woody and floral notes that is intense, complex but yet well-balanced.

10) A Day in August - Alive Brewing Co & Brewlander
Day in August is a collaboration beer between local brewers - Brewlander and Alive Brewing. This “rojak” (mixed) style of an ale was created to reflect the rich mixed cultures that represents Singapore, taking inspiration from the different spices and ingredients used in our daily meals.

Loosely based on the witbier style, the beer was made with mixed strains of wild yeast that ferments best at Singapore’s ambient temperature to create interesting tropical fruit flavours. Kaffir lime zest, black pepper corn, coriander seeds were added into the mix to create beautiful soft layers of flavours. Expect refreshing citrus from the kaffir lime, followed by a pleasant mix of subtle spices, and rounded off with a pillowy texture.

Cheers to the quality breweries featured this month!

Singapore’s last Wild Cat!⁣

The Leopard Cat⁣
Conservation status: Critically Endangered ⁣

Population: Estimated 41 adults in Singapore (last recorded in 2012)⁣

Major threats: Extensive loss of forest habitat, fatal road collisions and poaching for the illegal wildlife trade.⁣

These little lovelies have been brought to our attention by a number of conservation groups because there’s just so much we still don’t know about them. We all aim to raise awareness about this threatened species because not many people know they even exist on our little island. Being aware is the first step to coming together and nudging policy action in the right direction :)⁣

Last known surveys were properly conducted nearly a decade ago by Marcus Chua, pictured with some camera traps which he uses to survey the population. Leading the conservation of the leopard cat, he’s had several attempts to conduct follow up surveys fall through as permits to enter military zones were rejected. Most of these species are found in the military zones where dense forest habitat is available, so it makes conservation efforts much more challenging.⁣

Today we do not know whether the population has increased or decreased. We don’t know whether there could be a genetic health issue and whether because there are so few that inbreeding could threaten its survival. And, Leopard cats being mesopredators, They keep ecosystems in balance. They mainly consume rats, so without them, governments may need to spend more money managing pest species. ⁣

Marcus hopes that everyone in the world would have a love for the environment and a conservation mindset. He thinks that that would take care of a lot of things on Earth.⁣

We agree with you, Marcus. You’re a wild one in our book. Let us know how we can support your efforts!⁣

Wild Brew beers are brewed, packaged and sold in Singapore ✌🏻⁣

We are so proud to be part of the growing community of breweries in Singapore. This is a Low Key shoutout to all of us developing our own craft, expressing our individuality, exploring truly exciting new beer flavours that you can’t necessarily get anywhere else in the world. It’s an exciting time to be brewing beer on this little island of ours, but arguably an even more exciting time to be a beer drinker! Support local craft breweries, we’re only going to get better and better with your help. ⁣

And, just for fun, can you guess the MRT Station this photo was taken at?

It’s today and we want to celebrate the groups that have been doing the good work of ridding our shores of rubbish and protecting our environment. We see you, We appreciate you, We salute you! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The trio in have been making waves in our local community’s green scene organising coastal clean ups, guided nature walks, film screenings and more in the name of environmental advocacy! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Pictured here is Sarah Bennett, one of the three women running , at one of their clean up sites at Sungei Seletar. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
She’s an environmental engineer by training and when she’s not at work she’s doing her bit to protect what few natural areas we have remaining in Singapore.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If she could change one thing to protect our environment better she would ensure that when new products are being created, both companies and product designers should advocate and design for the entire life cycle of the product to be sustainable.⁣⁣

Fancy joining them on a clean up sometime? Get in touch with them and they’ll let you know when the next one is!⁣

Who the hell are these two beer ninjas?⁣

OK, we’re pretty quiet guys to be honest and don’t particularly love the spotlight. But, we felt it’s important we tell you a little bit about ourselves and what our vision is for Wild Brew.⁣

Chris (Left) is the tech wizard while Charles (Right) is the animal whisperer. Both share a passion for nature and getting a little lairy from time to time. We’ve known each other since we were 3 years old and grew up together here in Singapore. ⁣

Starting Wild Brew was our way of standing up for what’s right, being the change we wish to see in businesses and consumables, and our way of contributing efficiently and effectively to wildlife conservation projects. We also have hell of a fun time doing it. What’s not to love!⁣

With Wild Brew, we just want to support the conservation of local wildlife, one pint at a time. So if there wasn’t enough reasons to enjoy a cold one, we just gave you another! ⁣

Cheers wild ones!

🐯 Less than 200 wild Malayan TIGERS left in Malaysia.

😎 Vilma D’Rozario and Carmen Pang are directors of SWAG, a non-profit which aims to raise awareness and protect wildcats of the world. Mainly SINGAPORE's Leopard Cats and MALAYSIA's last 200 wild Malayan Tigers.

💚 Finding adequate funding is often their greatest challenge. Their dream is to raise enough funds to support tiger protection efforts conducted by .so that intends to put an end to poaching of wild tigers in Malaysia. ⁣

🌏 One of the projects they organise are ‘Cat Walks’ which invite the public to hike in a green corridor of Malaysia in order to deter Illegal poaching of Malayan tigers and mining in the area.⁣

💡THE IMPORTANCE OF TIGERS:

- Tigers are Apex predators and maintain ecosystem health.

- Take away wild tigers and prey and plant populations go out of control.

- The geographical landscape is affected by this change, which threatened peoples lives and livelihoods.

- Losing tigers first off means we lose one of the most beautiful wild animals in the world.⁣ But, it also means habitat destruction, loss of ecosystem function and essential natural processes will ultimately cost us more than just money.

✅ When asked if they could choose one thing to change our world for the better, they said:⁣
⁣
Carmen: “...I’d immediately set aside 50% of all lands and oceans on planet Earth as no-take and no-development protection zones to preserve our biodiversity and vital ecosystems. And asK everyone to become vegan!”⁣
⁣
Vilma: “I would like to see the complete end to trade in wildlife and wild animal parts. With this, the end to poaching of wildlife.”⁣

Here’s how we got our beer Juicy! We went crazy with Mosaic Hops but balanced it with Galaxy and Motueka. What are some of your favourite hop combos?⁣

Mosaic ®⁣..known for their triple-use profile encompassing bittering, flavor and aroma. They have high alpha acids but low cohumulone which makes them pleasantly hoppy, carrying flavors of mango, pine, citrus and herbs and aromas of tropical and stone fruit....⁣

Motueka ⁣.. It makes an excellent dual-use hop, carrying an exciting fruit aroma with refreshing notes of tropical fruit and citrus. It can be used at any point during the brewing process and works well in sweet, malty and fruity beers....⁣

Galaxy ®⁣.. It has an amazing citrus, peach and passionfruit aroma, especially when used as a late addition. The flavor is often quite intense upon production but mellows as it matures....⁣

As Singapore begins to lift Circuit Breaker measures and we start Phase 1/3 we just wanted to say that the last couple months has been really tough on everyone we know from customers to suppliers and those in our personal lives as well. We're still facing a lot of uncertainty but we're proud to see how Singapore has faced adversity.

Just remember that it's not just you affected, it's the whole world and it's going to take a collective effort to recover. If there was ever a time to show kindness or care for a stranger this is it.

We're hopeful and for anyone out there struggling, we got this! 💪

The WHITE-RUMPED SHAMA
Scientific Name: Copsychus malabaricus
Local Conservation Status: Critically Endangered

Listen up! There's a situation with one of our local songbirds you ought to know about.

Once quite commonly seen in Singapore, these charming little fellas are now one of the rarest spotted.

Why? Because of the heavy exploitation in the wildlife trade. These birds have beautiful songs, so beautiful that they have been severely hunted, caged and traded because of it. Their high value in the wildlife trade puts a target on their back as people want them as pets.

Thought to be almost extinct on mainland Singapore, to catch a glimpse of them you'd probably have to be on Pulau Ubin, Pulau Tekong or Sentosa where there are more forested areas - the species' primary habitat.

The are funding studies on local songbirds as more information is needed about their ecology and genetic health in order to establish effective conservation interventions.

If you love songbirds, let's make sure there are some left. Buying them as pets may encourage more of these birds to be poached illegally from the wild. Make sure it's from a regulated source.

Do you know about songbirds or want to know how you can help? have also formed the Asian Songbird Trade Specialist Group where you can share observations, support projects and share your knowledge !
