What luck that there was a glass of this fine Qvevri Rkatsiteli from in the fridge (kind of an own-label from this small Dutch distributor of artisan Georgian wines).

This 2018 was a bit harsh & lacking in harmony when it was opened last Thursday. Four days in the fridge & it's singing... So a good sign that it'll mature well.

Noticeably fresher & more lively than 2017 from the same producer, this is a textbook Rkatsiteli, with quince, angelica & jasmine aromas. The palate has a stony, chalky quality, full of baked & herbal accents - but fruit too! Nothing parched or dried out about it.

The tannins that were aggressive 4 days ago are so well mannered now. A real joy to drink, and full of aromatic, herbal delight.

Grapes from uncertified biodynamic viticulture. Wild ferment, unfiltered & with very minimal sulphites (35g/L total).

Harmonious tannins, cloudy, almost murky and rounded.
Accentuated fruity, complex aromas where every sip brings a new layer. Full of concentrated overripe cherries, black fruit, floral tones, ginger and spicy finish. Bright gleaming acidity.
Oskar Maurer is a winemaker who never ceases to surprise with his authentic approach to winemaking. The grapes for this wine were harvested on November 1. and among the dehydrated berries some 15-20% were affected by botrytis. Maceration for 10 days. This  wine emphasizes the fruitiness and freshness typical for Prokupac wines. Aged for 9 months in old oak barrels.
Only 500 bottles were made.

Natural red with a fine balance between structure and minerality. Smooth and delicate tannins. Cabernet Franc from Loire Valley at its best.

Unfiltered it shows a hazy, deep ruby colour.

Intens nose towards vibrant forest floor, to***co and a hint of white pepper.

The palate is nicely acidic with black cherries, cranberries and a hint of dry plums, finishing with a long lush aftertaste.

Excellent wine.

Reposted from When it comes to Riesling, plays Champions League. He’s quite the character: engaging, straight-shooting, rebellious – a maverick deeply committed to squeezing the best possible wine out of his grapes. Raised in northern Germany as the son of a French-German couple, he moved to Winningen, near Koblenz in the Terrassenmosel, to become a winemaker. He now runs a tiny garagiste operation, farming his 0.7 hectares of vines as organically as possible and keeping intervention in the cellar to a bare minimum. What his winery lacks in size, he makes up for in quality. Although he’s not a fan of the term, his ‘natural wines’ are top of the line.
His 2018 Riesling comes from 20-25 year-old vines on two steep, terraced plots: ‘In der Solig’ and ‘Göttchesberg’, both part of the large Winninger Domgarten lieu-dit. The soil there consists of grey and red slate, dating back 400 million years, with a top layer of sand, flint and clay. The grapes were hand-picked in mid-September, crushed by foot and directly pressed. 80% of the fruit was fermented spontaneously and aged in steel tanks, the other 20% in used oak barrels. After a single racking, the wine was bottled in August 2019 – unfiltered and unfined, with no sulphites added. Its label comes from an old stained glass panel in Winningen’s pizzeria depicting a fox.
The 2018 vintage has a brilliant, slightly turbid light-gold color. Its bouquet is intense, opulent and seductive, with rich layering and bright minerality. Aromas of honeydew melon, baked apple and lime are followed by wet slate, wax, white flowers, herbs and a hint of creamy, fruity yeast. On the palate it’s energetic, lively and absurdly drinkable, with mouthwatering acidity, stunning depth and intriguing texture. Notes of lime, green apple and melon dance on the tongue, complemented by those of sour candy, aniseed, peach and a stony, mineral sensation that transports you straight to Winningen’s Steillagen. Its finish is complex and seemingly infinite, filled with grapefruit, ginger and a subtle hint of white pepper.

New gem from the Oszkar Maurer cellar. Indigenous grape Kövidinka. Most vineyards are to find in Hungary, but also in Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia. Mainly in regions close to the Hungarian border. It is an easy drinking wine, with layered rich floral and fruity flavors. Fresh green apples with hints of orange peel, acacia and mimosa blossom, refreshing acidity is all you need to get the party going.

The first orange wine I ever had was one by . Located in the Serbian province of Vojvodina, the Maurer family has been producing wine for four generations. They farm 16 acres of land, including 6 acres in the wine region of Subotica, which borders Hungary to the north. From the start, he’s been a champion of the region’s native varieties and has always respected the winemaking traditions of previous generations – working his land by hand and horse, producing wine without additives. .

The Olaszrizling for his Fodor is grown in the Subotica village of Bački Vinogradi, on soil composed of clay and limestone. The 50-year old vines are gobelet-trained and are farmed organically, without using synthetic chemicals. Harvest took place by hand in late October, with around 20% of the fruit affected by noble rot. All the grapes were destemmed and crushed, after which they were left with their skins for 14 days. Fermentation and malolactic conversion took place spontaneously, without any additives. The wine is aged in a 66-year old, 800L Hungarian oak barrel inherited from Maurer’s grandfather, after which it is bottled unfined and unfiltered, with no sulphite added. .

The 2017 vintage has a remarkably cloudy, deep amber colour, with quite a bit of sediment. The nose has notes of canned apricots, bruised apples, citrus fruit, flower honey and Italian herbs, mainly thyme. On the palate, more canned apricots, honey and thyme appear, complemented by notes of quinces, orange peel, lemons and white tea. It has lively acidity, while the honey-like sensations also lead to a perceived sweetness. A slight, but discernable undertone of tannins and a long finish – filled with notes of tangerine, flowers and herbs – complete the experience, making it a highly complex, well-rounded wine. Served at 13°C, it paired great with cheesy chicken curry. .

Riesling made Heidi and Hubert Hausherr, passionate winemakers having their family estate in Eguisheim, a beautiful village in the Alsace, France. Following the rules of bio dynamics they work in full harmony with nature and respecting the environment of the vineyard. Their wines are organic and terroir-driven, reflecting climate, soil and the winemakers handwork.
Au bout du Sentier 2008 is a dry unfiltered white wine, aged 1 year on old oak barrique and 11 years on the bottle.
Great wine lifted by its acidity and minerality, bringing out the best of Riesling. Ripe passion fruit with honey and subtle oxidative notes.

Reposted from Kadarka is a native Balkan grape originating from the shores of Lake Skadar, situated on the border between Montenegro and Albania. Today most Kadarka vineyards find themselves in Hungaria and just a small part in Rumania and northern Serbia.

Kadarka 2018 from Maurer Winery is a natural red wine. It is Pinot Noir-like, fruity, spicy and has beautiful acidity. Outspoken bouquet of red fruit, raspberry and strawberries, light in color, almost translucent.
Very drinkable with earthy undertones.
Matching greatly with Hungary’s paprika-laden cuisine, it goes very well with spicy pork, confit de canard, roasted chicken and even spicy fish soup. Vegetarian dishes, roasted fennel, broccoli and eggplant from the oven.

When it comes to pizza and pasta, this wine feels as if it is perfectly made for them.
