When you first light your new Peterson pipe, in that moment of quiet meditation, the beginning is also a culmination. Your Peterson pipe is the result of all of the stages of our unique craft; each moment is as necessary as the next.

The philosopher G.W.F. Hegel observed that ‘the result is the same as the beginning only because the beginning is purpose.’

When you light your Peterson pipe, it is the result of a purposive beginning; it is also this beginning itself, because, in that first, special instant, the result is always the ‘simplicity of the beginning’.

Enjoy the February 20th International Peterson (Pipe) Smoking Day with us 🔥🍂💨

There are still a few semi-hidden time instruments still to be admired in Dublin city. In a past age before the digital clock or even the wrist watch, it was common that if you wanted to check the accuracy of your pocket timepiece, you'd compare it to the clock seen in the window our shop, at the time the retailer John Morton’s jewellery, here on Nassau St. in Dublin 2.

The tradition of Irish Silver dates back to the 13th century, when goldsmiths first began practicing in Dublin. Dublin was the first Irish city that established a guild (in 1498), and a town mark. It was in 1605 that hallmarks first started appearing on Irish silver plate; which would be branded with the town mark (a crowned harp) and a makers mark.

At Peterson, after we pumice and buff our pipes, we proceed to band the pipes. The silver band, more than being a simple aesthetic embellishment, also strengthens the pipe, securing the mortise even if the wood has cracked. To spin the silver, our silversmith Jason Hinch (trained by—and successor of—David Blake) makes his own hardwood mandrels, over which the silver is turned.

The Peterson bands have varied over the decades, changing according to each silversmith’s personality. Every single pipe is individual, between the maker and the smoker, like an engagement ring between us and you. A Peterson pipe is a collaboration from start to finish, a synthesis of the personality of the craftsman and the smoker; it is the physical embodiment of a constant attitude.

Halloween, like Peterson, started in and both have been going strong here ever since. At Peterson, we pay attention to this historic holiday: we produced the ‘Samháin’ pipe in 2009, and paid tribute to Irish writer Bram Stoker in 2012 with our distinctive Dracula pipe; in 2015 we crafted the unique, two-sided , ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ pipe. Now, in 2021, you can enjoy our new Halloween System pipe! Whatever Peterson you choose to smoke, we hope you have a happy—and spooky—Halloween!🎃

At Peterson, we like to let our hand-crafted pipes do the talking for us. But today, we’d like to take you behind the scenes, to give you a glimpse of one of the people who are part of the pipe-making process.

If, between the year of 1976 and today, you have enjoyed the cool smoke of one of our System pipes, chances are that Joe was involved in one of the sixteen essential steps to craft it! Today, on May 4th, we celebrate Joe’s 45 years of expert craftsmanship, one of the driving forces behind our celebrated Peterson quality.

In an age where there is a ‘day’ for everything, we thought we’d take today to celebrate Joe—now one of our most trusted restorers—and to express our appreciation for his loyalty. Thanks Joe!

At Peterson, we pride ourselves as much on our innovations as on our traditions; in recent years, we have broken the mould with the distinctive designs of the ‘Dracula’ and ‘Rosslare’ pipes, which feature eye-catching coloured stems. The annual occasion of our St. Patrick’s Day pipe has become an event of increased anticipation for enthusiasts and collectors—as well as for those with an eye for colour.

For this year’s Patrick’s Day pipe, we went back to the drawing-board. The 2021
St. Patrick’s Day pipe features a distinctive emerald stem, finished in a striking acrylic. Paired with our classic rusticated bowl, and complemented with a leather stand, this pipe is a worthy addition to our St. Patrick’s range.

The 2020 pipe presents a unique reconsideration of our traditions of colour, craftsmanship and innovation; it will certainly prove a delightful and unique addition to any collection!☘️🪨🐍

Goethe, in his Theory of Colours, classifies yellow as the brightest on the spectrum:

‘In its highest purity it always carries with it the nature of brightness, and has a serene, gay, softy exciting character.’

Artists such as Kandinsky implemented Goethe’s theory to wield colour in a more dynamic way, and both Yellow Spot Whiskey and our own Peterson ‘long-wood’ 264 straight-stemmed pipe subtly capture this brightness - in the darker months, why not add a little colour to your evening 🔥🍂💨💛🟡 ***co

For the centenary of the death of Bram Stoker, Peterson debuted the Dracula pipe; sporting a scarlet and ebony acrylic stem and a large gothic signed nickel band, it was an exuberant design that captured the essence of its classic namesake. 🧛🏻‍♂️🦇

Somewhat less well-known, a few years later an internal competition was held in the company to design a new pipe as daring as the Dracula. The competition was won by our very own Brian (employee for 40 years in the Peterson of Dublin shop) who conceived a rustic and smooth ‘two-faced’ pipe...and the Jekyll and Hyde pipe was born. 🎩🧪💉

These two pipes have become the stuff of legend for cult Peterson followers due to their inimitable design; with these pipes it’s never a trick, always a treat! ***copipes 💀👻🎃🔥🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️🦉🦇🕷🕸🍂🍁🍂

The Peterson System pipe as we have it now was finalised in its third patent by Charles Peterson on September 3rd, 1898. The System pipe contains an intricate anatomy, belied by its exterior and rather simple premise: to provide a cooler and dry smoke.

Often, a student of art will study the form and function of different parts of the human body in order to understand how they work together. Anyone who wants to know how a car works will have to look inside, to see how the machinery combines to produce the eventual outcome.

The System pipe, through its intricate simplicity, is synonymous for many with Peterson pipes as a whole. For the unfamiliar, there is no better time to try the System that has been with us for more than one hundred years. Often, there is a beauty not just to form, but to function too. Happy Peterson’s System Day. ***co special thanks 🙏 to my favourite

If you say that something is at the end of the rainbow, you mean that people want it but it is almost impossible to obtain or achieve.
The promise of a cure – the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – often makes sensible people do irrational things.
Not in this case; you can still have your Peterson products... Enjoy your weekend 🌈☘️🎵🎶🎵

‘At the end of a rainbow,
You’ll find a pot of gold
At the end of a story,
You’ll find it’s all been told.
But our love has a treasure
Our hearts always spend
And it has a story without any end...’

‘At The End Of A Rainbow’
(music by Jimmy Krondes and lyrics by Sid Jacobson - released in 1958 and performed by the late Earl Grant.)
