ETON VINTNERS’ 12 WINES OF CHRISTMAS
On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me: a bottle of Prosecco Bosuga Extra Dry from Eton Vintners. They also sent 12 drummers drumming but they were completely eclipsed by the bubbles.

Prosecco is the fizz of the moment! It’s delicious and flexible and works supremely well as an aperitif and goes well with almost all food. This Bosuga comes from vineyards in the Veneto and especially from the Conegliano region. A deliciously soft creamy nose with ripe fruitiness and a distinctive palate, with a cream soda tone and good length. Eton Vintners’ recession champagne! Perfect with fish and as an aperitivo and for getting the party started.

ETON VINTNERS’ 12 WINES OF CHRISTMAS
On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love sent to me: a bottle of Quinta do Passadouro Vintage Port 1994 from Eton Vintners, together with eleven pipers piping.
The house of Quinta do Passadouro stretches back to the eighteenth century and enjoys vineyards up to 70 years old. Now owned by Quinta do Novak, in 1994 it was owned by Dieter Bohrmann who had invested in and greatly improved the property. This is a lovely old port, which will soon celebrate its 30th birthday. Quite mature, the wine is still expressive with soft tannins and cacao and violet notes. Peppery, liquorice-scented. Long finish. Ready to drink now. Perfect with the cheese board or Christmas pudding.

ETON VINTNERS’ 12 WINES OF CHRISTMAS
On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me: a bottle of Chambers Rosewood Rutherglen Muscat, Victoria, Australia NV from Eton Vintners together with 10 lords a-leaping.
This delicious and distinctive fortified muscat hails from the venerable Chambers winery founded in the days of the gold rush in Australia, 1858. The average age of this Muscat blend is four years giving a rich and unctuous wine. Tawny red in colour. On the nose, a complex of oranges, raisins and rose petals. Luscious in the mouth, concentrated and rich yet zesty and balanced. Delicious on its own as dessert, it works well with rich puddings and mince pies.

ETON VINTNERS’ 12 WINES OF CHRISTMAS
On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me: a bottle of Barolo DOCG Roncaglie, Chionetti 2019 from Eton Vintners together with nine ladies dancing.
This is benchmark Barolo from the Chionetti family whose connection with the steep and high slopes of Barolo stretches back to the beginning of the 20th century. The Barolo Roncaglie is of relatively small production and is purely made from the Nebbiolo grape. In the glass ruby red, slightly opalescent. On the nose, the wine is fruity and floral with notes of peach, cherry and dried rose, hints of spices and liquorice. In the mouth, warm and elegant and well balanced, with a fresh finish. This Barolo goes well with lamb, turkey or goose, red meat and hard cheeses.

ETON VINTNERS’ 12 WINES OF CHRISTMAS
On the eight day of Christmas, my true love sent to me: a bottle of Gewurztraminer Classic, Hugel 2018 from Eton Vintners - together with eight maids a-milking.
Alsace wines date back at least 2,000 years. There is no family that has promoted this ancient wine region more than Hugel. The iconic Hugel Gewurztraminer 2018 is for us the benchmark against which all others can be judged. Wonderfully easy to drink - it just slips down - it walks the incredibly narrow path between being a crowd pleaser and having immense sophistication, itself a reflection of a long growing season and maturation. The 2018 vintage is superb giving a fine, well-balanced wine with great depth. This is a highly perfumed wine, with tropical fruit and lychee overtones plus cardamon spice, saffron and liquorice. Perfect as an aperitif, with lobster, Chinese or spicy food or with pork, pheasant or partridge. One of our all time favourite nemeses.

ETON VINTNERS’ 12 WINES OF CHRISTMAS
On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love sent to me a bottle of Esporao Reserve, Alentejo, Portugal 2020/21, an organic red from Eton Vintners - as well as seven swans a-swimming.
This is a punchy red made organically by Esporao in Alentejo, a region in the south of Portugal which produces two thirds of the world’s corks. It is an assemblage of six varietals including Trincadeira and Touriga Franca but also the more recognised Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines have an average age of 20 years. This gives the wine its delicious complexity with notes of black fruit jam with black pepper and cloves combining with notes of coffee, berries and ci**rs. Multi dimensional in the mouth with spice and dark chocolate. Good structure and lingering finish. Works with red meats, steak, roasts and Stilton.

ETON VINTNERS’ 12 WINES OF CHRISTMAS
On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me: a bottle of Destinea Sauvignon Blanc, Joseph Mellot, Loire, France 2021/22 from Eton Vintners - together with six geese a-laying.
The Domaine Joseph Mellot is still family owned, based in Sancerre, where the family origins stretch back to 1513. This is Eton Vintners’ Christmas choice for Sauvignon Blanc this year. Resplendent in the glass and elegant and floral on the nose, it has hints of lemon and grapefruit. The palate shows good aromatics and balance. We love this pure Sauvignon as an aperitif, or it goes well with grilled or marinated chicken, smoked and fried fish, lobster and spicy food.

ETON VINTNERS’ 12 WINES OF CHRISTMAS
On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: a bottle of L’Unico, Vignano, Chianti DOCG, Tuscany, Italy 2018 together with five gold rings.
With a family history that stretches back to the fourteenth century, this biodynamic wine is grown on the breathtaking Tuscan hills to the south of Florence. Made predominantly with the Tuscan grape par excellence, Sangiovese, the wine is rounded with added Syrah to add depth and sophistication. On the nose, a floral scent with hints of cherries and caramel. In the mouth, rounded tannins with notes of leather, to***co and liquorice. Very herbaceous finish. A good go-to wine at lunchtime, it works with charcuterie, turkey veal and roast chicken.

ETON VINTNERS’ 12 WINES OF CHRISTMAS
On the second day of Christmas, my true love sent to me: a bottle of Pagos del Galir, Godello, Valdeorras, Galicia, Spain 2021/22 from Eton Vintners - and two turtle doves.
This wine hails from vineyards in the north of Spain, with impeccable ownership and pedigree. It’s made with Godello, a wonderfully versatile grape that combines the structure of white Burgundy with the finesse of a juicy mineral grape. Although an old varietal, Godello is becoming increasingly sought after and fashionable. It has a delicate nose, salty and mineral with floral, herb and citrus notes. On the palate the wine is vibrant, silky and elegant with good structure and a full body thanks to its lees ageing. Absolutely delicious. A must for a crisp white this Christmas.
