🍷 About last night 🇿🇦

A stunning tasting with the amazing wines from last night.

Johan did an amazing job, really giving a sense of place for this stunning site in Wellington.
Pinotage, Chenin, Chardonnay and Malbec were the stars of the show with a sprinkling of Sauv Blanc, Cab Sauv, Merlot and Cab Franc for good measure. Thanks Johan for a fantastic evening.

And thank you Julia for what has become a regular mid week spot on our tasting rosta.

🍷 About last night….

Our Marques De Riscal tasting last night hosted by the fabulous Ruth Sutton.

6 fantastic wines, really showcasing the breadth of the range in not only Rioja but Rueda as well.

The star of the show had to be the delicious 150th anniversary edition, but two wines really caught the eye. The XR rosé was sensational as was the XR Reserva… both of which are available on our by the glass list this month!

Amazing to have Ruth with us, sharing her knowledge and passion for this amazing, historic winery. Thank you Ruth ⭐️

🍷 New wines 🍷

New arrivals this week include these ultra cool, no added sulphur wines.

I’m a little sceptical of the ‘natural wine scene’, but that’s far too long a rant to post about.
However, I can get behind winemakers who just want to leave the fruit to do its own thing and be the real star of the show.

That’s what we have here. A project started in 2009 using the fruit from Château de la Terrière in Beaujolais.

🍷 Les Enracinés Chardonnay. Grapes from the village of Chardonnay (where the grape was first grown back in the 9th century) fresh pineapple fruits, a touch of salinity and a floral note. Delicious and pure. Normally £22 now £19

🍷 Les Enracinés Beaujolais- Villages. Fruit from 50yr old vines from selected plots, including Lantiginié, home to the awesome Jean-Marc Burgaud.
Everything you want from Beaujolais, red cherry, fresh raspberry and a mineral note to balance it all out. Chill it and enjoy in the sunshine. Normally £17 now £14

🍷 Les Enracinés Beaujolais rosé. Shut the front door. Gamay rosé! Fresh wild strawberries, clean crisp and pale as a ghost. Far too trendy for the likes of me but it won’t stop me guzzling it! Normally £17 now £14

Not sure which one to try first? Buy all three for just £41 and save an additional £6!

And the labels! You may remember I had a helper in the shop a couple of Christmas back… lovely fellow called Chappy. Well he had a beard not too dissimilar to the one sported by the guy on the label. But don’t let that put you off!

☀️🍹 Sangria Season 🍹☀️

I’m calling it! Ignore the weather, this bank holiday is officially the start of Sangria Season 💃

This stuff has been unbelievably popular for the past three summers and I’ve already had enquiries about refills.
Sadly there is a delay on the actual bottles, but fear not… I have a plan.

First up, if you have a bottle from previous years then now is the time to give it rinse and bring it down. We’ll refill for just £12! 🍹

If you haven’t got a bottle then we’ve managed to get our hands on a limited amount of the awesome 2L (equivalent to two bottles) pitchers in the photo. Grab one of these this weekend and we’ll fill it for just £26. (Offer ends 7pm Saturday 25th May. Normal price £29)

Be quick though. Once the Barkisland Crew (you know who you are 😉) get word that Sangria Season has started they’ll be down the hill quicker than Jack & Jill!

When you Jay from sends you the new cheese menu and starts the email with “You’ve a classic cheddar (my favourite)…” then you are going to be excited to try it aren’t you!

Another belter of a line up this month, and there are some great pairings with our by the glass list as well. Try the Montgomery Cheddar with our ‘Cotexa’ Arribes, the Shropshire Blue with a glass of RUA Pinot Noir or the squishy C’est Bon with the superb Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Blancs 😋

🥂 About last night…. 🥂

A huge thank you to for hosting another fabulous Gusbourne tasting last night.

Great to try the new vintages and I’m delighted to announce that I am now stocking the awesome 2022 Pinot Noir. We were the first to stock the Guinevere Chardonnay (the new vintage is mega btw) and are the first to be stocking the 2022 Pinot Noir which is every bit as good as I had hoped!

The much acclaimed Blanc be Blancs is on our current by the glass list as well so if you missed out last night then you still have a chance to try what I think are the best English wines in the business.

I’m pinning all my hopes on the sunshine making an appearance soon. And when it does you’ll be needing some rosé!

Rogers & Rufus Grenache of Barossa rosé. A delicious Provence style rosé from the iconic heartland of south Australia wine production, Barossa Valley.

Thrilled to see this pop up outside the shop over the weekend.

Thanks to Calderdale Council for not putting up any notices and giving the local businesses zero opportunity to make alternative arrangements for accepting deliveries, adjusting staffing levels or making any plans for the disruption this is going to cause for the whole week. Thanks for supporting local businesses 👍

We are open as normal this week as are all your other fab local shops. It may take you a little longer than normal to get to us so please factor that in. But we’d love to see you!

Proper, estate grown and bottled New Zealand Sauv Blanc. Grapes from 7 exceptional plots on the Rose family estate, close to the Wiarau River Marlborough, each fermented separately and then blended before bottling.

All the classic characters of 🇳🇿 Sauv Blanc… vibrant, ripe gooseberries, herbs, nettle, tonnes of tropical fruit and crisp citrus acidity.

This month’s by the glass list features some new arrivals such as the awesome MMAD vineyards Chenin Blanc 🇦🇺 , a smattering of the unusual including the lively and fresh Triebaumer Furmint 🇦🇹 and the comfort of the familiar in Dornier Malbec…. from Stellenbosch 🇿🇦. Just to keep it interesting 🤔

We’ve also got a touch of the classics with Minuty rosé and the ever popular Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs

😋 Tasting season! 😋

It’s that time of year again. Tasting season! I’ll be travelling the country over the next few weeks searching out amazing new wines for you. Rest assured I’ll be working really hard and leaving no stone unturned for you!

That does mean I’ll be closed tomorrow (Wednesday 21st) so I can attend my favourite tasting in the calendar. Head down and see us today, if not we’ll back as normal on Thursday.

To get you started here are few new arrivals from South Africa 🇿🇦 on the shelf right now!

🍷 Dornier ‘Equanimity’ Cab Sauv, Stellenbosch. If you made it along to our big Christmas tasting back in November you will have seen this one. It sold out on the night and we’ve only just got it back in. We added it to the by the glass list this weekend and fair to say it remains a big hit!

We are back on full power now. To celebrate finally being able to say “see ya” to January we are launching our Feb cheeseboard a few days early.

The guys at have worked their magic to put together another epic selection

🧀 Crottin de Chavignol, a tasty little goats cheese from Loire
🧀 St Paulin, a semi soft, washed rind cheese with a creamy texture
🧀 Bleu d’Auvergne, think Roquefort but creamier and subtle

🍷 How’s your Sunday going? 🍷 BTS look at the prep that goes in ahead of the Wine Club deliveries. 🚚 🍷 Step one, sort all the cases of lovely wine into piles (the sourcing, tasting and notes have all been done before this stage obviously) 📦 Step two, fold all the boxes, easy once you get into a rhythm but dangerous work. 🍷 Father’s Day gift idea 🍷 I had the opportunity to taste this recently and didn’t hesitate in ordering it in! Perfect Father’s Day gift or just treat yourself! From the Cecilia Beretta estate, Veneto. Once the vineyards were the home of the local university agricultural faculty, experimenting with new plantings and pioneering wine making techniques. The main focus for the Pasqua family now though is rediscovering its roots and making wines true to the area. The Terre di Cariano Amarone is a great of example of what they now do…. And they do it well! Dark cherry, berries, mocha and spice all mingling together perfectly in this sophisticated but intense wine. 2015 vintage, it’s not a baby and is in its prime right now! 🎄 Perfect with a mince pie 🎄 I was chatting with a fellow wine merchant a few days ago and the subject of dessert wines came up. It suddenly dawned on me that I have a total of 17 different dessert wines. How does that happen? “The trouble is” he said “They are all so blooming tasty that they are easy to buy!” He was right, they are tasty and then they are hard not to put on the shelf.
