New Brunswick is rolling out what it calls affordability measures to help those who need it most.

Social Development Minister Jill Green said they know many residents are struggling to make ends meet.

Social assistance and youth engagement services recipients will get a monthly $200 household supplement starting in February.

Residents who receive the annual $400 Low-Income Seniors’ Benefit will get a $200 supplement for the 2023 benefit year.

Officials said the supplement will remain in place until the benefit is permanently increased to $600 a year.

In addition, a policy change for spousal contributions to facility-based care to ensure at least 60 per cent of the household income remains with the spouse at home will take effect in January.

“New Brunswick seniors who are in their own homes and have a loved one in long-term care, or who need a little extra help with their household bills, will not have to wait for the assistance they need,” Kathy Bockus, the minister responsible for seniors, said in the release.

Provincial officials said the new measures will cost an additional $65 million a year.

A 19-year-old man from Oromocto, N.B., has been charged in connection with a fi****ms incident and an Alert Ready in Sussex.

On November 11, 2023, at approximately 1 a.m., members of the Sussex RCMP responded to a report that an individual had been shot at an establishment on Main Street in Sussex, and the shooter then fled the scene. While on the way to the scene, a member reported hearing an additional shot fired. One individual was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At 1:53 a.m., the New Brunswick RCMP issued an Alert Ready message for the Sussex region, advising residents to remain in their homes with doors locked, and for others to avoid the area while police searched for an individual who was believed to be armed and dangerous.

A number of RCMP Specialized Policing Units attended the scene, including the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, and the Southeast District Crime Reduction Unit.

A short time later, at approximately 2:30 a.m., police located the suspect behind a business on Main Street, and arrested him without further incident, and the Alert Ready was cancelled.

On November 14, Jacob St Peters appeared in Saint John Provincial Court, and was charged with:

- Two counts of Intentionally discharging a firearm while being reckless as to the life or safety of another person
- Using a prohibited weapon without reasonable precautions for the safety of others
- Possession of a prohibited weapon without a licence
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Pointing a firearm
- Possession of a firearm while knowing the serial number had been tampered with

He was remanded into custody, and is scheduled to return to court on November 15 for a bail hearing.

Police would like to thank the public for their cooperation during this incident. The investigation is ongoing, and if you have any information that may help further the investigation, please contact the Sussex RCMP at 506-433-7700.

New Brunswick has enhanced its Insulin Pump Program to offer continuous glucose monitoring coverage to eligible diabetes patients.

In a news release on Wednesday, officials said the move is the second phase of a $2.1 million plan to upgrade the province’s diabetes management resources.

The government also expanded the insulin pump program to include people aged 26 and older, and updated client and family contribution calculations to include more income categories.

“More than 5,000 New Brunswickers are expected to benefit from this change, which allows diabetes patients to better monitor and manage their glucose levels on a daily basis,” said Health Minister Bruce Fitch in the release.

The province said the new coverage is available to anyone who requires intensive insulin therapy delivered by a pump or at least three daily injections.

That coverage extends to people of all ages who meet the medical eligibility criteria, and who meet the income-testing process.

The program will pay for benefits not already covered by other public and private third-party payers like employment benefits.

A possible chance to see the Aurora tonight...

***AURORA WATCH UPDATE***
After reviewing the latest data, it appears that the Aurora display may arrive a little sooner than earlier expected... perhaps beginning at Sunset rather than 9pm.
I've captured some of the most recent data in the image below. The top left indicates info from NOAA. The yellow highlighted area states that the arrival would occur at 1800UTC. We subtract 4 hrs from that number for Atlantic time, so around 2 pm. It also states that the effect should continue into the early hours of tomorrow.
Next up is the forecast from one of the many apps, showing an increase around 2pm. The yellow highlighted area is most important. We want the "BZ" number to be as negative as possible.
Next to it is the predictions for "kp" levels.. how far South they can be seen. Kp 6 or higher is preferred.
The bottom left shows the expected forecast coverage area. The red "view line' is how far South you may see something. Finally, there is a weather map with expected conditions, around 10pm tonight.
Even with all of this data, nothing is guaranteed. Particles from the Sun come as waves,.. maybe one.. maybe several. It all depends on how they couple with our magnetic field when they arrive.
Secondly... unlike an eclipse, or Full Moon, we can't predict exact times. The best we can say is within 4 - 6 hrs. We just don't have the ability to do better than that yet.
If you have an app, watch the "BZ" component. We want it to be negative. The more negative it is, the stronger the coupling of the charged particles to our magnetic field. Think of it as the doorway.
Where do you go? I can't comment on your particular area as I don't know where you live. For me, I will look at Google Maps and try and find a location that is away from city lights, with a good view of the Northern horizon. The farther North, the better.
Pick your spot. Learn your camera settings. Set your ISO to 1600... and your exposure time to 12 - 15 secs. Experiment, then try with different settings. Even a smart phone will reveal so much more than your eye can see.
I will have one final post around 530, once I review the final data. I wish all of you good luck in our evening adventure. :)

New Brunswick has enhanced its insulin pump program to offer continuous glucose monitoring coverage to eligible diabetes patients.

Health Minister Bruce Fitch said Wednesday that more than 5,000 people are expected to benefit from the change.

Fitch said this will allow diabetes patients to better monitor and manage their glucose levels daily.

“Better management of a person’s diabetes helps to prevent serious complications, reduce hospitalizations and promote better overall health,” said Fitch.

The announcement is part of a $2.1-million investment to upgrade the province’s diabetes management resources.

Earlier this year, the insulin pump program was expanded to include people aged 26 and older. The government also updated the client and family contribution calculations to include more income categories.

Coverage for continuous glucose monitoring is available to people who require intensive insulin therapy delivered by a pump or at least three daily injections. That coverage will extend to people of all ages who meet the medical eligibility criteria, and who meet the income-testing process.

The program will pay the cost of benefits not already covered by other applicable public and private third-party programs.

More information on how to apply is available online using the link below:

An online application process will be made available in the coming months, allowing for simpler renewal of coverage.

Sussex has a long rich Military history

Camp Sussex was the largest Military Base in Atlantic Canada. It was officially opened in 1893. However, the land had been used for training by local militias as early as the 1870s.

The Sussex Military Camp, frequently shortened to Camp Sussex, was a training facility for the Permanent Active Militia and Non-Permanent Active Militia, later known as the Canadian Army. At the time, it was located on the southeastern edge of the town of Sussex, New Brunswick.

Camp Sussex was established in May 1885 when New Brunswick militia units assembled in a large tented camp at the site south of the Intercolonial Railway mainline to prepare for service in the North West Rebellion. Few permanent buildings were constructed, although a large area of forest and farm land was cleared on the flat floodplain in the Kennebecasis River valley.

As the decades passed, Camp Sussex would become the premier military training installation of the Maritimes until it was eclipsed, and eventually shut down in the 1970s, by the opening of CFB Gagetown.

During World War I, Camp Sussex hosted the First Training Battalion of the New Brunswick Regiment, later renamed the 1st Depot Battalion in 1918.

The start of World War II saw the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division authorized in 1940 under the command of Major-General E.W. Sansom. The army decided to concentrate the 3 CID in the Maritimes and one of the areas selected was Camp Sussex. The camp was enlarged to handle a brigade with units arriving that fall for training. After the 3 CID units departed for overseas deployment, they were replaced by units from the 4th Canadian (Armoured) Division. Following deployment of the 4 CID, the 17th Infantry Brigade of the 7th Canadian Infantry Division began to use the training facilities; the 7 CID being the general reserve for Atlantic Command. In April 1943 the 17th Infantry Brigade consisted of the Victoria Rifles of Canada, The Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles of Canada and Les Voltigeurs de Québec. The A-34 Special Officer's Training Centre was established at Camp Sussex from 1944-1945 to train officers for the CANLOAN program

Following World War II, the Canadian Army used Camp Sussex as a minor facility for training reserve units in New Brunswick until the construction of Camp Gagetown. The 8th Hussars (Princes Louise's) (Militia) continued to use facilities on the site until the early 70s when Camp Sussex was closed. Until at least 1969, in addition to the Tank Hanger, the Officer's and Sgt's Messes, two H-hut barracks, an H-hut kitchen, a Drill Hall and a parade square were all in use by the 8 CH. The Regiment also trained on 6 M4A2E8 Sherman tanks until they were removed in the late 60s. The land was purchased from the Department of National Defence by the town of Sussex however few landmarks remain.

Modern-day Leonard Drive runs through the middle of the training camp and the modern Brigadier Milton Gregg VC Armoury has been constructed on a tiny portion of the former camp to house B Squadron 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's), a local armoured reserve unit. A nearby rifle range that dates to the days of Camp Sussex remains DND property but is not used for training. The most visible remnant of Camp Sussex is a former tank hangar, now used by the New Brunswick Agricultural Museum.

11/11/2023

The New Brunswick RCMP has finalized the allocation of the new frontline policing positions from the 2023 provincial budget increase announced in April.

After comprehensive research and analysis, new resources will be allocated as per the chart to each Regional Service Commission.

The new frontline positions were allocated to districts and Regional Service Commissions based on factors such as:

- Full-time members to population (cop to pop);
Geographical coverage per full-time member (cop to km2);
- File workload and number of priority calls per member;
- Crime type and crime severity;
- Impact of the Local Governance Reform (km and population coverage), and,
- Feedback from District Commanders on specific district challenges.

The allocation per Regional Service District aims to achieve more consistent and balanced police to population and police to kilometer ratios between the different commissions.

The funding increase also supports new positions and resources in the Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE), Digital Forensic Services (DFS), the Explosive Device Unit (EDU), the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Police Dog Services (PDS), the Operational Communication Centre (OCC), and the Major Crime Unit (MCU).

We ask for the public's support as we build to fill these positions over the next two years and we remain dedicated to fostering open lines of communication and collaboration as this growth is implemented.

Canadian Blood Services is seeking hundreds of donors in Saint John and Moncton.

According to the organization, the distribution of blood to hospitals continues to outpace the number of donations being made across Canada, including in New Brunswick.

“Canadian Blood Services sent New Brunswick hospitals nearly 23,000 units of blood this past year to treat patients so it’s incredibly important that people donate blood—or other blood components, like plasma and platelets—to prevent patient care from being impacted,” says Kim Elliott, associate director, donor relations, Canadian Blood Services.

“As quickly as we collect blood, hospitals are calling for more. There are simply not enough people donating in New Brunswick to ensure patients’ needs will continue to be met long-term.”

Blood donors are needed... to help ensure hospitals in the province receive the blood they need... [the] Saint John Regional Hospital and Moncton Hospital alone need more than 11,000 units of blood per year.

Figures from the organization show only two percent of New Brunswickers donate blood. There are roughly 550,000 people in New Brunswick who are eligible to donate blood.

The next blood donor clinic in Sussex is December 18th at the Sussex Legion.

A positive start to a program providing a route for internationally trained physicians to get access to family medicine.

Dr. Nicole Leblanc of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick says more than 200 applications were received last month for their Practice Ready Assessment program.

The application process lasted from October 1st through 31st.

“These candidates are going to be filtered in regards to eligibility criteria. Then they are going to go through a rigorous process of exams, interviews, and then a 12-week clinical field assessment. It’s only for family physicians, and the first cohort is going to be ten candidates, ” Dr. Leblanc says.

Eight other provinces currently offer Practice Ready assessment programs, but New Brunswick is the first bilingual program.

“These are all internationally trained physicians that have passed their residency, so they’ve finished their medical degree and have also been practicing independently for a certain number of years,” Dr. Leblanc says.

She says once this cohort has completed assessments, they will reassess and see what the interest is and what the needs are going forward with regard to Family Physicians.
