Todays Cigar Review -The Churchill Special.
Trichy ci**rs were once a Churchill favourite.The 123-year-old cigar company, founded by Solai Thevar, a resident of Woraiyur, is now the only cigar manufacturing unit in India. It’s also a reminder of Trichy’s British heritage. In the last 20 years, almost all the cigar manufacturers in Woraiyur have shut shop due to the increase in taxation, lack of availability of skilled cigar rollers, and cheap machine-made ci******es becoming popular in the market.
So What makes them unique?
On a silent residential street of Woraiyur, in the western part of Trichy, three men are hard at work inside a 400-square-foot room on the first floor of a building.
Nizam, 48, holds one end of the fermented leaf between his hallux and second toe and swiftly pulls out the main stem of the leaf. In the well-lit room with open windows, a strong scent makes you heady if you stay for too long. The men are the last skilled cigar manufacturers at V Vasudevan’s Fenn Thompson & Co.
The father-son duo explain that the fermentation process is what makes the Trichy cigar unique. “The foreign ci**rs are made by ageing the to***co leaf,” says Rathnavel. “Our technique is to ferment the to***co leaves using -
* toddy water
* juices from fruits like grape
* honey
*pineapple.
The Churchill Special, a tribute to the former PM, is made even to date, its to***co leaves are fermented for 13 to 14 years.
“The Churchill cigar,” says Vasudevan, “To make 15-20 such pieces it will take one and half days.” a little different to the modern cigar rollers in Cuba.
Tiruchirapalli was transformed into an important stop on the cigar lover’s map. Even Arthur Conan Doyle and Alfred Hitchcock mentioned its ci**rs in their works.
And i was recently gifted one of these unique ci**rs from a member of the family who visited my shop...all he asked was an honest review on the cigar! and thats what this is....

The 1880 Rosado is the result of the carefully selected batches of the 3 Cuban seed to***cos harvested in the San Andres Valley by the Turrent family - Habano Mexico, Habano Criollo and Habano 2000.
The blending of these three to***cos has made the crafting of this, the fifth variant of the 1880 range possible.
The 1880 Rosado is a medium strength cigar with creamy notes of coffee, earth and roasted cashew nuts, and a light sweet zesty palete on the final 3rd..
These ci**rs retail around £20 in the UK.
Great with a cappuccino or a creamy stout, and I'm sure it would be amazing with a good quality Margarita.

The to***cos used for this commemorative stick have been aged for at least six years prior to rolling. Once rolled, the ci**rs were allowed to age for a minimum of two years so that their flavours could marry.
