STELLENVIEW RESERVE SHIRAZ 2017: ‘’N FORS JENTELMAN IN ’N SNYERSPAK!’

Omdat ek geleer het dat wyn baie persoonlik en subjektief is, steur ek my nie veel aan toekennings wanneer ek wyn koop nie. Moet my nie verkeerd verstaan nie, toekennings dien beslis ’n doel, en een van ’n gesaghebbende kompetisie soos die 2021 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is goud werd, by wyse van spreke. En Stellenview se Reserve Shiraz 2017 het nie sommer net ’n toekenning ontvang nie, hy is ’n skitterende 95 punte uit ’n moontlike 100 toegeken!

Nodeloos om te sê, ek het met groot afwagting uitgesien om sy prop te trek en hom slukkie vir slukkie te geniet. En ek’s nie teleur gestel nie.

Maar kom ons begin voor. Die druiwe vir hierdie wyn kom uit verskillende wingerde – Durbanville-vallei, Devon-vallei en Helderberg. Die druiwe is afsonderlik verwerk, sommige in vlekvrye staaltenks, ander in oop kuipe. Tydens die gistingsproses van 14 dae is die druiwe 3 tot 6 keer ’n dag oorgepomp of deurgedruk om kleur te onttrek. Bo en behalwe kleuronttrekking, is die wyn se smaak ook beïnvloed deur die onttrekking van tanniene. Toe het die wyn appelmelksuurgisting ondergaan waarna die komponente oorgeplaas is na hoofsaaklik Franse eikehoutvate vir veroudering van tussen 16 en 24 maande.

En nou die hemelse gedeelte! Stellenview se veelbekroonde Reserve Shiraz 2017 is ryk en intens met puik balans en elegansie. Geure van ryp, donker vrugte soos braambessies, framboos en kersies, swart drop, donker sjokolade en delikate eikehout en vanielje word ondersteun deur sweempies wit peper en speserye. Die tanniene het oor die jare ferm dog sappig gebly en baie bygedra tot die vol mondgevoel. Die wyn eindig op ’n talmende en vrugtige noot wat mens laat smag vir nog.

Hierdie is nie ’n alledaagse kuierwyntjie nie. Dis ’n ernstige wyn wat jou laat regop sit en kennis neem terwyl hy jou sintuie bekoor. Hy sal nie net lank in die mond talm nie, maar ook in die geheue.

Geniet hom aan tafel met mense wat puik wyn ken en waardeer want hy sal enige ete met beesvleis, wildsvleis, lamsrib en braaivleis na nuwe hoogtes neem … en jou aansien onder jou kuiergaste laat styg!

Soos voorheen genoem, ken ek punte toe op grond van hoe ek ’n wyn ervaar en geniet:
80-84: goed
85-89: baie goed
90-94: blerrie goed
95-100: te goed om waar te wees goed

Hierdie spogwyn het by my 92 punte verdien, terwyl my gaste dit van 90 tot 96 punte gegee het - en al drie is groot wyn-entoesiaste. Die een het die wyn selfs as “’n fors jentelman in ’n snyerspak” beskryf. Skote Petoors!

Benewens die skittervertoning op die DWWA van 2021, kan die Stellenview Reserve Shiraz 2017 vele ander toekennings agter sy naam skryf, te veel om hier te noem.

Not only rated among the top 20 Cabernet Sauvigon's in South Africa in the local Cabernet Sauvignon Challenge , it received 90 points in both the Investec Trophy Show & Decanter World Wide Awards.

Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge awarded the 2020 with 93 points Double Gold and described it as follows :
Concentrated colour. Spearmint, black berries, supported by clever, hand selected oak choice-grain and toast compliments. Tannins still shows presence, but finely knitted and just needs time to integrate. Great cellaring potential. 8-10years.
