The DA has a vision for service delivery in the Northern Areas and Nelson Mandela Bay
by Cllr Nqaba Bhanga - DA EC Provincial Leader and NMB Mayoral Candidate
Today, 26 August 2021, I took my mayoral campaign to the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth for the first of many interactions with the people living in this part of our Metro.
I was joined by PE Northern Areas Constituency Leader, Yusuf Cassim, MPL, and Nelson Mandela Bay MMC for Budget and Treasury, DA Cllr Malcolm Figg, in conducting an oversight inspection at the newly reopened Nelson Mandela Bay Customer Care Centre in Cleary Park. We also interacted with staff at the Home Affairs Office and hosted a meet and greet in the Cleary Park Shopping Centre parking area.
At the Home Affairs Office we were informed of massive staff shortages due to the Department of Home Affairs taking a decision to freeze new appointments. This situation is severely hampering services to our people. I will write to the Minister to request intervention and Hon. Cassim will also be writing to the Speaker of the National Assembly, requesting this issue be placed on the agenda of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs.
The Customer Care Centre opened its doors to the public on 17 August 2021 after closing down in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
The Centre remained closed for an extended period of time because the previous ANC-led Coalition of Corruption government allowed the lease agreement and the IT contracts to lapse.
The DA and its coalition partners stepped in and as a result of the direct intervention of MMC Figg, the Centre has reopened to provide services to the people of the Northern Areas.
The DA believes that the people of the Northern Areas and Nelson Mandela Bay deserve uninterrupted good governance for the next five years. This is only possible if the DA receives a majority of 51% in the up-and-coming local government elections.
For too long the people of the Northern Areas bore the brunt of the previous ANC-led government’s disdain for them. Under the ANC government a budget was approved that allocated zero capital budget to four wards in the Northern Areas.
The budget recently passed by the DA and its coalition partners is not only focused on service delivery and mitigating the water crisis, but also allocated money to all wards in NMB.
The reopening of the Customer Care Centre is just one step in the DA’s plan to keep on delivering better services to the people of the Northern Areas.
The DA’s service delivery vision for Nelson Mandela Bay is very clear.
We will ensure that qualified people, not connected cadres, are appointed so that roads are repaired, drains are fixed, electricity lines are maintained, parks are kept clean, streetlights are fixed, water leaks are repaired, bucket toilets and illegal dumping are eradicated, and municipal accounts are correct and arrive on time.
Where the DA governs, we get things done. Together we can take Nelson Mandela Bay forward again.
