Lighting up changes my mind-set: suddenly, not much seems to matter and time slows a little. Much of my life revolved around motorsport, culminating in competing in national-championship single seater racing in the UK. Everything was fast and frantic and in many ways it suited my personality. It was adrenaline-fuelled, and I loved it. I’m still in love with speed and my car business, Spo

rtech, is about fast, exciting, unique performance cars and muscle cars. But I must admit that chill time has become an important aspect of my life too. Some of my clearest thinking and best decision-making has been when my mind was relaxed – even if the air around me was a little foggy! I am, I suppose, a cigar fanatic and carry my passionate nature into this venture - like I have all the others. I started smoking in the 1990s and my natural curiosity soon made me want to taste new brands, and experiment. I moved from the much-loved and established Cubans to New World ci**rs, which was a fantastic experience of different flavours and tastes. I was on a constant learning curve – I always wanted to add to the experience. To me, that’s what life is all about: experimenting and experiencing the variety of what’s on offer. That’s always easier when you control the supply chain and I guess my interest in sourcing ci**rs grew from there! Along the way and while developing as a cigar smoker, I discovered like-minded people – amazing individuals from all walks of life who’ve guided me in developing my passion or just sharing it with me. This social aspect of ci**rs opens many doors. The common love is ci**rs but it is often the gateway to wonderful social “indulgences”. These include whiskey, cognac and wine, not to mention cheese, and chocolate. They all create opportunities for pairings and discovering what can go together is fascinating and educational. My goal was, and is, to get more people enjoying both the established and lesser-known brands at the best possible price in South Africa, because pleasure shouldn’t break the bank!
