Madame Bollinger had every reason thinkable to drink champagne.

This weekend we can think of quite a few.
In Springbok victory
and All Black defeat
Come rain or sunshine
Popping corks shouldn’t be discouraged

Top that with spring day coinciding with Cap Classique Day on Sunday. It’s mandatory to enjoy at least one special bubbly.

Don’t be caught without some fizz this weekend. If you’re still unprepared, don’t stress we’ve got you. We even have a bottle or two open to try before you buy and a chance to win a magnum Rose of Sharon from Domaine Des Dieux.

See, we agree with Madame Bollie, there’s always a good enough reason to drink champagne, or Cap Classique.

Momento Vintage Release with Marelise Niemann

September 26 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm at Wine Menu Kramerville

R320 per person - Tickets available online.

Momento began in 2013 while Marelise Niemann was winemaker at Beaumont Family Wines in Botrivier.

She has since become known for wines of purity, elegance and honesty, working with old vines in Botrivier, Swartland and Piekenierskloof, putting terroir front and centre. The first winemaker in South Africa to make 4 individual, site specific Grenache Noirs.

Marelise has a deep understanding of soils and her particular love for Grenache is evident when she starts speaking of the variety. That first vintage was two barrels of Grenache Noir, and her love affair with the grape has deepened; she now works with Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and 4 different Grenache Noir sites.

The new vintages from Marelise will release in September and we offer you the opportunity to taste these new, single soil wines with her in a tutored tasting format.

The keyword for me in my winemaking philosophy is drinkability. My aim is to make the wine drinking experience for our customers as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.” – Attie Louw, 7th generation winemaker

Longridge Ultra Premium with Jasper Raats
September 19 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

R320 per person. Bookable online.

Nestled against the slopes of Helderberg, Longridge is the leading organic and biodynamic farm in Stellenbosch. Here they honour the age-old organic traditions by looking down into the earth, ensuring there are no harmful chemicals or toxins in the ancient, decomposed granite soils, or in the fresh mountain waters running down in cool underground aquafers from the Helderberg slopes. The cool Maritime breezes from the Atlantic ocean drifts in as morning mist, ensuring the vineyards are enveloped in a cool blanket to protect them from the heat of the day. The biodynamic view also guides them to look at the sky and the phases of the moon, and not just the soil.

In the cellar nothing is ever forced on the grapes. Natural winemaking techniques are used to ensure the story of the vineyards are guided to bottle as best as possible.
“Our goal is to produce world-class wines in a natural way, applying the age-old traditions of natural winemaking and respecting our land, by not using any herbicides, pesticides or chemical sprays.” Cellarmaster Jasper Raats
Jasper Raats is the shareholder, cellar master and managing director of Longridge Wine Estate, as well as partner in Vigneron Consulting, an international consulting business.  Jasper first gained prominence for wines he created in New Zealand. In 2003, he started working as viticulturist and winemaker at New Zealand’s Clos Henri in the Marlborough region, developing a new vineyard and making wine for French Company, Henri Bourgeois. During this period, he also started Koru Wines, which became one of New Zealand’s top and most expensive wines.

A white blend to make you look twice (and sip continuously)

Project Z Riesling Verdelho 2020 from Kleine Zalze
We tasted this wine recently and immediately fell in love, with the wine of course. Typical Riesling aromatics intertwined with limey Vedelho notes. It’s just a touch off dry, but with an amazing fresh acidity, making it rather easy to enjoy with just about any food and any weather.
The grapes for this unusual blend were sourced from Durbanville and Elgin in the case of the Riesling and Koekenaap for the Verdelho. The Verdelho grows very close to the Atlantic Ocean on the West Coast of South Africa and has natural high acidity and a low pH.
The Riesling was harvested early morning and fermented in stainless-steel tanks before maturation in an amphora as well as a component in older French barrels.
The Verdelho had a more interesting journey – harvested and pressed at a custom crush facility on the West Coast and then transported to Stellenbosch for fermentation and maturation in an amphora.

Chiselled and taut, the low pH allows this wine to age exceptionally well. The acidity will mellow over time, revealing a generous palate laden with typical Riesling aromas of honeysuckle, pear, and lime zest.

Available online and in-store at Wine Menu Kramerville.

Saturday Sipping Session – De Kleine Wijn Koöp

August 24 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm Free to join for all over 18s at our Kramerville store.

A very unique selection of wines will be poured this Saturday by De Kleine Wijn Koöp.

De Kleine Wijn Koöp is run by winemaker, Wynand Grobler, and his wife, Anya. The Groblers regard the ‘co-operative’ as a two-man family business, and manage the business from a small cellar and a dedicated team in the heart of Paarl. Wynand pays little attention to corporate structures or large cellar teams – his main goal is to be personally involved in the winemaking process. He produces only small quantities of wine with grapes from prestigious, and somewhat mysterious vineyards of Stellenbosch, Swartland, Walker Bay, Franschhoek, Piekenierskloof and Agter-Paarl.
As mysterious as the Black Cat.

As nomadic as David Kramer’s station wagon. As heroic as Wolraad Woltemade’s horse. With tiny volumes, De Kleine Wijn Koöp specialises in high-quality wines. De Kleine Wijn Koöp is a place for us to give creative expression and play a little outside the conventions of the store shelf.

So prepare yourself for one-of-a-kind wines.

We’ll be sipping on:
De Kleine Wijn Koöp Debutant Semillon 2022
De Kleine Wijn Koöp Kreatuur White 2023
Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Estate Red 2022
De Kleine Wijn Koöp Heimwee Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

A Chenin Blanc that pairs perfectly with the shift in weather in Johannesburg
Somerkind Old Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2023 from Roodekrantz.

Roodekrantz is known for their range of Chenin Blancs and other varieties made from Old Vineyards, or heritage vineyards as we call them in South Africa. These old vineyards have a story to tell after a minimum of 35 years in soil, weather and human interaction. Roots that are deep, not only anchoring the plant, but fetching nutrients and minerals from deep below the surface. They help the vines to handle the stresses in difficult vintages and seem to not be affected by weather quite the same way as young vineyards.
Somerkind is from a 38 year old dryland bushvine vineyard in the Groenekloof area near Darling. Fermented in old French barrels and left on the fine lees for another 14 months to add texture and richer mouthfeel. We love the purity and elegance in the wine, with just the right amount of fruit concentration.
Since it pairs perfectly with Joburg sunshine, we thought it fitting to share a little more on the pairing front. The wine’s tropical flavours will complement seared scallops with a mango salsa.
It will pair well with the rich flavours of grilled pork chops served with chutney. The slight salinity perfectly matches the bright, zesty flavours of shrimp ceviche. For a salad option, the delicate character of the wine pairs beautifully with the creamy texture of goat cheese and the peppery bite of arugula.

Available online and in-store with Wine Menu Kramerville.

16/08/2024

When it comes to presentation, Trizanne Barnard’s wines are in the front of the queue. It’s almost like one can hear the ocean and feel the breeze, just by looking at the bottles. Trizanne’s love for the waves, is beautifully captured and each label reflects something about the wine. From the fresh saline expression of the new Blanc Fumé, the sunset vibes of Pinot Noir to the spice and umami of Syrah.
(Spot Trizanne and her surfboard somewhere on every label.)
Trizanne has been sourcing grapes from the cool, windy Elim area since 2009. Here she has found the elegance and acidity she loves so much. Today all grapes are from the greater Cape South Coast, including Hemel & Aarde, Sondagskloof and the furthest point of Vermaaklikheid.
The 2023 vintage is marked by a great growing season and start of harvest. All white grapes were harvested and happily fermenting in the cellar by the time the heavy rains arrived at end March. Some quick thinking ensured the reds also came in a bit earlier than originally planned, but this turned out to be a very good decision. Freshness was retained at no expense of fruit concentration.
All 6 of the new wines are now unpacked and ready for you.
Elim Blanc Fumé 2023 from a 20-year-old vineyard shows lots of grenadilla and gooseberry with lemon and ginger notes in the background. The creamy acidity is supported by a saline finish.
Sondagskloof White 2023 breaks all Sauvignon Blanc barriers. Using oxidative techniques in the cellar, but due to high acidity and low pH the wine is protected and super stable. A textured wine with fresh flinty finish.
Benede-Duivenhoksrivier Chardonnay 2023, now in its 5th vintage shows classic stonefruit and citrus floral notes with toasted coconut and basil stem on the finish.
From Hemel en Aarde there’s the elegantly perfumed, yet crunchy spice note on Pinot Noir. While Barbera shows dried herbs and concentrated flavours.
Elim Syrah 2023 is another knock-out. Black olives, chorizo and nori paves the way for a tight and clean palate. Get some paella with this one!

Swiftly diverting you your attention to really cool Chardonnay.
Welma Smith’s energy is tangible when she speaks about her geeky love for wine. Together with husband Martin Smith they are creating exciting wines from different terroirs around the Cape. What started out as a Chardonnay project, now includes a few reds wines too.
Welma says: “Our formal range consists of four Chardonnays, each exploring four different origins in the Western Cape. We are self-confessed wine nerds, and with these wines we like to showcase our inner-geeky side. The Chardonnay grape is neutral in character but develops a unique identity when exposed to the influences of terroir, the use of oak and different winemaking techniques. The female warrior on each label represents her territory. She is feisty in portraying the unique characteristics of the respective terroirs and the resulting wine. It is this energy, radiating from each area, that we want to bring to life in each glass.”

Today we put the focus on Atlas Swift Cederberg Chardonnay 2023, one of the favourite wines at our recent Women of Wine tasting.
This wine has a pale straw colour, filled with inviting citrus aromas of lemon and lime peel, and a touch of orange blossom to round it off. The palate is precise and poised, with a tension derived from the fresh acidity, and lingering notes of lemon curd, almonds and desiccated coconut on the finish.
The grapes were hand-harvested, de-stemmed and transferred to French oak barrels (20% new and the balance made up of 2nd and 3rd fill oak) where it underwent alcoholic fermentation, without the addition of yeasts. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place in all the barrels. Matured in oak for a total period of 12 months, with lees stirring once a week to enhance the texture.
The label gives a good indication of what to expect in the bottle. A focused wine with cool freshness. Visit our website to see the other labels and read about the wines.
Available in-store and online from Wine Menu Kramerville.

14/08/2024

Storm Ridge Chardonnay just released, and we are delighted to receive our precious allocation of this world class Hemel en Aarde Ridge Chardonnay this week.

After 12 vintages in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, working intimately with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Hannes Storm discovered two tiny parcels of land with particularly exceptional terroirs. The two vineyards, one in the Hemel en Aarde Valley on clay-rich shale soils, and the other in the Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley on decomposed granite sub layers, were both planted in 2008 to Pinot Noir.

Hannes’s maiden vintage, 2012 Vrede and Ignis Pinot Noirs, were released in August 2014. In 2015, Storm Wines brought two new additions to the family by producing their Ridge Pinot Noir, from clay-rich shale, but at much higher altitude than Vrede with similar soils. The first Vrede Chardonnay was also added in the same year with great excitement. Ridge Chardonnay, came on board in 2019, taking the production to 3 Pinot Noirs from the 3 sub-appellations and 2 Chardonnays. Storm Wines is still the only producer that crafts single vineyard Pinot Noirs from each of the three appellations in the Hemel en Aarde.

Today Hannes and Nathalia Storm strive to steer the purest characteristics of each vineyard site towards bottle and cork. Small production, careful viticulture, minimal intervention in the cellar and a constant nod to the Old World present the wines with distinctive personality and character.

Today the focus is on Ridge Chardonnay 2023, freshly released.
One of the coolest years on record, leading up to harvest. Let’s not forget the heavy rain in March causing much damage in the Valley. Fortunately, Storm managed to finish harvesting in the first week of March, ensuring fantastic fruit quality in the cellar. The result is a vibrant vintage, with energy, texture and fantastic fresh natural acidity and low pH, ensuring the building blocks for extended aging in bottle.

A brand new release from the talented Woman of Wine at Vino pH, Hanneke Kruger.

Cabernet Sauvignon, hailing from the ever diverse Swartland.

Harvested in mid-February to ensure ripe tannins, yet a whole lot earlier than the traditional areas like Stellenbosch. 10% Whole bunches were crushed in the bottom of a cement conical tank and the rest of the grapes destemmed on top. 15 days maceration, pressed, and aged in old barrels for 14 months.

This wine oozes with delicious red and black fruit, ripe tannins and a juicy palate. Simply not your average Cab.

We are thrilled to tell you it is now available from Wine Menu Kramerville online and in-store. And with just over 800 bottles made this is not a wine you want to sleep on. Trust us.

Kaapzicht The Steytler Range tasting with Danie Steytler

August 15 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm at Wine Menu Kramerville.

R320 per person.

Danie Steytler Jnr has been making waves with his pure and classic wines, yet following in the footsteps of his dad, who was a leader in the creation of Pinotage blends in South Africa. Danie’s great-grandfather planted the first vineyard on the farm in 1946, creating a home for generations to come. Here on the Bottelary Hills, the Steytler family craft wines with a sense of place, wines of purity and concentration.
When one tastes and appreciates the wines of today, it’s important to look back into the history. Where it all started. We wouldn’t have heritage vineyards to work with if our great-grandparents didn’t have the vision to plant those precious vines decades ago.

The stories around this family is colourful, from leaving SFW when it was risky, to registering Wine of Origin Bottelary, and tackling the export market since 1995, long before many other estates. 2022 marks the year Danie Jnr (4th generation Steytler on Kaapzicht) and his wife, Carin, became the official custodians of this family farm.
Join us as we taste The Steytler Range latest vintages to release, with Danie Jnr.

🍇The 1947 Chenin Blanc 2023 – from the second oldest surviving Chenin Blanc vineyards in SA
🍇Steytler Pentagon 2021 – showing the power of Bottelary
🍇Steytler Pinotage 2021 – taking a heritage grape to another level
🍇Steytler Vision 2021 – the wine that made people pay attention since 2001
A selection of Steytler Vision from previous vintages will also be shared from the family vinoteque

This will be a tutored format tasting with limited seats. Book online today. Ticket Link in Bio.

Please join us for a very special Saturday Sipping Session, where we will be celebrating some of the wonderful female winemakers for Women’s Day!

3 of the brands available on the day: Brookdale, Wolf & Woman & Lelie Van Saron.

Jolandie Fouché - Wolf & Woman.
After more than a decade of earning her stripes in the South African industry, Jolandie decided to turn her attention to her passion project, Wolf & Woman Wines, fulltime. These days, she lives back home in the Swartland with her husband Gustav, Kiddos Helen and Zander, and the family’s two Labrador retrievers, Cinsault and Simba.

Natasha Williams - Lelie Van Saron.
Lelie van Saron is the realization of a dream by one of of South Africa’s brightest winemaking talents, Natasha Williams.  Natasha grew up in a small, rural town named Saron nearly two hours north of Cape Town. The name Lelie van Saron translates from Afrikaans to “Lily from the town of Saron.”  Growing up, she was referred to as being a lily by her family and this name paid homage back to her non-traditional wine upbringing. The range today includes the two core wines, a Chardonnay and a Syrah, and has grown to include two more experimental wines, a pét-nat and a red blend, under the Jade range.

Kiara Scott Farmer - Brookdale.
Kiara is originally from the Cape Flats area of Cape Town. She graduated from Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute in Viticulture and Oenology in Stellenbosch before being selected for the prestigious CWG Protégé Programme. Here, she caught the attention of renowned winemaker and cellar master, Duncan Savage or Savage Wines. Duncan recognised her ability and passion and so appointed her as his assistant winemaker at Brookdale Estate, where he was the consulting winemaker at the time. This young lady is moving vineyards, literally and figuratively, with her determination, outlook, skill and passion. We couldn’t be more excited to watch her leading the Brookdale wine philosophy and look forward to seeing what she does next!

3 of the wines available on the day: Sijnn by Charla Haasbroek, Anysbos by Marelise Niemann & McFarlane produced by Alex McFarlane.

Sijnn is a true unicorn within the Cape Winelands. Located in Malgas, they were the first to plant grapes in the entire region. 15km from the sea, the maritime climate is warm, but not too hot, moderated by southerly winds off the ocean late morning just about every day, especially in summer. Due to the low vigour and low yields from the poor soils and dry climate, all the vines are grown as bush vines, in a natural way adapting to their environment with gentle help from the human hand.

Marelise Niemann - Johan Heyns bought a piece of land in the Botrivier valley in 2008, today Anysbos is known for their exceptional wines made by Marelise. Her love for Grenache is what drew her to this farm.

McFarlane Wines was born while sharing dreams and desires one evening over dinner, sometime in 2018. A dream to have something family-owned and operated, and a deep desire to honour some of South Africa’s heritage varieties. McFarlane Wines aims to produce fine, honest wines from these varieties and share what we love about them with the world.

01/08/2024

David and Nadia Sadie are known for their dedicated work with old vines in South Africa. What better day to highlight their efforts than Old Vine Day right on the heels of their newest vintage release.
We had the privilege of tasting through the new releases with David last night and as always, are completely blown away by the overall quality of all the wines.

This year David highlighted the importance of understanding and commitment to each vineyard. It takes time to get to know each site, and to nurture these old vineyards to produce healthy fruit. They aim to secure vineyards where they can have full control all year round. That’s the only way to make sure the vineyard stays healthy and is cared for consistently.
All the Chenin Blanc vineyards they work with are Certified Heritage Vineyards, meaning that they are all older than 35 years. The oldest, Hoë-Steen, was planted in 1968 and the youngest in 1986. Each vineyard shows a unique characteristic, influenced by soil, wind, sun, age and of course clones. 8 Vineyards are used in the regional Chenin Blanc of which 4 are bottles individually to form the Single Vineyard Chenin Blancs.

Aristargos is a blend of 9 varieties, led by Chenin Blanc. 17 different vineyards are used as building blocks for this remarkable wine. It is rich and complex, yet fresh and focused.
There might be more white than red wines in the offering, but David has a very special place for Grenache Noir in his heart. They use 4 vineyards in Swartland, mostly on granite, for this detailed wine with remarkable length.
Grenache also forms the backbone of Elpidios, making up roughly 60% of the total blend. It’s textured and layered, packed with intrigue and aromatic nuances.

Over the past few years, their winemaker, Mark Le Roux, and viticulturist, David van Schalkwyk, both agree that the vine is a living organism which, in harmony with nature, produces the best grapes and authentic wines. The vine’s resistance and strength depend directly on its symbiosis with its environment.

At Waterford, they believe that a fine wine displays the character of its cultivar, a true sense of place, and should reflect the length on the palate, has a complexity of flavours, internal harmony between aromatics and the palate, and balance between its essential components.

See you Saturday to Sip Waterford.

In the spirit of the Olympics, lets take a little trip to France (from the comfort of your own couch)

Château Guiot Numa Costieres de Nîmes 2022 - Just unpacked and now available at Wine Menu Kramerville online and in-store.

Costières de Nîmes has more in common with the Rhône across the river than it does with the wines of Languedoc immediately neighbouring it. Château Guiot lies just outside the city of Nîmes, in the heart of this appellation.

Chateau Guiot estate enjoys a wonderful landscape where their fully organic vineyards oversee the Camargue. This red is a deliciously friendly blend of Syrah and Mourvedre aged I barrels for 18 months.

Deep purple hue, a beautifully scented nose with herby aromas, lashings of juicy forest fruits and spicy, rich berry flavours on the palate and a good, smooth finish.

“This wine conjures up happy memories of wine travels in the South of France. Enjoying the softer red wines of this incredibly beautiful part of the south. It feels a bit more like Rhone village wines, than the Languedoc light reds. A happy in-between just perfect for regular drinking.” - Corlien

The best part is that it’s really easy on the budget at only R448.
