I will soon be interviewing Christian Eedes, Editor at Winemag, for our 3rd Annual State Of the Nation Address (Wine).

We will be discussing the state of wine in South Africa, including topic such as up-and-coming producers, which areas are succeeding, style trends, varietal expressions and vintage comparisons among others. I have linked our previous episodes below.

Dawn Patrol Sauvignon Blanc 2022

“Hogan wines was started in 2014 and is a small, family-run business with Jocelyn Hogan Wilson as winemaker. We make our wines in the beautiful Banhoek Valley and source our grapes from various regions of the Western Cape, selecting vineyards suited in terms of climate and soil to the varietals we make. We looked for older vines which tell the story of the vintage through their well-established root systems, gnarled trunks and lower yields. Through our close relationships with the farmers, we continually work to gain an understanding of the nuances of each vineyard, an understanding we feel is pivotal to making good wine.”

🍇Hogan Wines are no strangers to our shelves, vintage after vintage these wines continue to impress and delight. Jocelyn’s wine-making style is true to the cultivars and she lets the grapes do the talking, most of the time…

Meet our lovely Jane Ferreira-Eedes :) - Dainty Bess is run by Jane Ferreira-Eedes and concentrates on a single wine: Vintage Rosé MCC made from 100% Pinot Noir. The project originally started in 2009 when Jane’s parents made a bubbly from a small vineyard planted at Klein Optenhorst in Wellington. Jane has since changed the name to Dainty Bess, one of her mother’s favourite rose types.

Steeped in the history of 17th-century winemaking, Jessica’s forefathers made “sour” wine for the Emperor of Austria. It became her vocation to redeem her family’s reputation in wine and so after a gap year working locally and internationally in vineyards, she completed a BSc Oenology and Viticulture degree at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. She started Saurwein part-time in 2015. When she had a baby in October 2017 she resigned from her job to become a mother and full-time winemaker for her own brand. Today she focusses on handcrafting her two favourite cultivars, Pinot noir and Riesling, and makes three wines under the Saurwein brand name, two Pinot noirs and one Riesling. 🙂

These are South African wines, via French hands. Julien and his wife Sophie live and make delicious Riesling in Alsace, France in the village of Saint-Hippolyte in the Colmar region. Julien’s wines show elegance while remaining concentrated and are true to both origin and cultivar. :)

Thorne & Daughters ‘Copper Pot’ Chardonnay 2021

The Chardonnay is sourced from a handful of vineyards in the Cape South Coast region, where good soils (predominantly clay/shale) and cool growing conditions combine to produce elegant wines.

The winemaking is as minimal as possible.All ferments take place using wild yeasts, no additives (other than minimal SO2 during maturation) are used. The wines are whole bunch pressed in the old Vaslin basket press and fermented in old French oak barrels.

The wines undergo natural malolactic fermentation and are matured for 9 months in a mix of older small French oak barrels to avoid a dominant oak character. SO2 is added very late in the wine’s life to allow a very natural stabilisation of the wines.

Residual Sugar: 1.8g/l | Total acidity: 6.6g/l | Alcohol: 13.5% | pH 3.35

Jane’s focus is on producing the best Rosé MCC she can – she sees Extra Brut (RS of less than 6g/l) and extended lees ageing (42 months) as pillars for this goal. Delicate yet focused, this 100% Pinot Noir Cap Classique is harmonious, dry and delicious. :)

Tyrrel & Anette Myburgh Tyrrel and Anette are the 5th generation of Myburghs on the Joostenberg farm in Paarl. They strongly believe in the fundamental importance of origin. This manifests itself in the vineyards by farming organically and often without irrigation. The winemaking philosophy avoids obtrusion as much as they deem is possible without compromising quality.

Luddite ‘Saboteur’ White 2021

Normal service resumed! After the fuller, richer 2020 we are back to the leaner style of previous vintages. We still continue to have some skin contact on the Sauvignon and Viognier portions.
All components spent 11 months in French oak (majority old).
The blend is 66% Chenin Blanc, 17% Viognier, 17% Blanc Fumé (Sauvignon Blanc).
Notes of orange blossom and apriocot on the nose, with white peach and green melon on the palate. Savoury palate, with some nice weight, and a citrus-salt finish. ;)
