I will soon be interviewing Christian Eedes, Editor at Winemag, for our 3rd Annual State Of the Nation Address (Wine).

We will be discussing the state of wine in South Africa, including topic such as up-and-coming producers, which areas are succeeding, style trends, varietal expressions and vintage comparisons among others. I have linked our previous episodes below.

Hogan Wines Pre-Release Tasting with Jocelyn Hogan

“Hogan wines was started in 2014 and is a small, family-run business with Jocelyn Hogan Wilson as winemaker. We make our wines in the beautiful Banhoek Valley and source our grapes from various regions of the Western Cape, selecting vineyards suited in terms of climate and soil to the varietals we make. We looked for older vines which tell the story of the vintage through their well-established root systems, gnarled trunks and lower yields. Through our close relationships with the farmers, we continually work to gain an understanding of the nuances of each vineyard, an understanding we feel is pivotal to making good wine.”

🍇Hogan Wines are no strangers to our shelves, vintage after vintage these wines continue to impress and delight. Jocelyn’s wine-making style is true to the cultivars and she lets the grapes do the talking, most of the time…

Meet our lovely Jane Ferreira-Eedes :) - Dainty Bess is run by Jane Ferreira-Eedes and concentrates on a single wine: Vintage Rosé MCC made from 100% Pinot Noir. The project originally started in 2009 when Jane’s parents made a bubbly from a small vineyard planted at Klein Optenhorst in Wellington. Jane has since changed the name to Dainty Bess, one of her mother’s favourite rose types.

Steeped in the history of 17th-century winemaking, Jessica’s forefathers made “sour” wine for the Emperor of Austria. It became her vocation to redeem her family’s reputation in wine and so after a gap year working locally and internationally in vineyards, she completed a BSc Oenology and Viticulture degree at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. She started Saurwein part-time in 2015. When she had a baby in October 2017 she resigned from her job to become a mother and full-time winemaker for her own brand. Today she focusses on handcrafting her two favourite cultivars, Pinot noir and Riesling, and makes three wines under the Saurwein brand name, two Pinot noirs and one Riesling. 🙂
