In 1986 Colin Collard started Wine of the Month with the idea to help wine lovers discover the very best wines at the very best prices. Wine of the Month is the only wine store in South Africa to have an independent panel of wine judges. The panel tastes over 2,000 wines each year. Each wine is judged in a blind tasting. Donatus Red 2019 - This nose is bursting with flavours of blackcurrant and liquorice. The palate is refined and elegant with silky tannins. On the palate flavours of blackberry and cassis are abundant, with hints of dark cherry and a touch of cedar.

Meet Clifford Collard (), the MD of Wine-of-the-Month Club. 🍷

Cliff is the son of Colin Collard, who started Wine-of-the-Month Club in 1986. Founded 38 years ago, the Club has changed a lot, but one thing remains constant. Having a panel that blind tastes and selects all the wines for Club members.

“Our panel of independent wine experts tastes over 3000 wines a year. They taste the wines blind. So they don’t know who made the wine, how pretty the label looks or what the price tag says. They focus on one thing and one thing only—how it tastes in the glass,” says Cliff.

Included in the box is the seasonal newsletter and neck tags for the bottles with tasting descriptions and food pairing suggestions, when best to enjoy the wines, etc. 🥂

This is a great way to start your journey into exploring the world of wine—or enjoying a regular selection of superior wines—without purchasing “plonk” and wasting too much money.

The inaugural winners of the Fine Wine Awards sponsored by American Express were announced on 13 June 2024.

The blind-tasting competition took place over four days of rigorous judging. The aim of the now annual competition is to house the largest listing of blind-tasted wines in South Africa, the most comprehensive independently judged guide for South African wine lovers.

This aspiration is firmly on track with almost 900 entries. The quality was high with 18 Golds and 341 Silvers being awarded. The top-scoring – 95 and above – in their class received a Trophy (12 in total).

The entries covered the whole gamut of styles, from Cap Classique to sweet, with 18 categories overall. The wines were evaluated by an independent panel of judges, with award-winning wine writer acting as Chairperson.

As a varietal, Malbec creates a rather inky red (or violet), intense wine, so it is also commonly used in blends, such as with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to create the red French Bordeaux claret blend.

It ripens mid-season and can bring a very deep colour, and ample tannin. Malbec is very susceptible to various grape diseases and viticultural hazards — most notably frost, coulure, downy mildew and rot.

The Malbec grape is a thin skinned grape and
needs more sun and heat than either a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Merlot variety to mature. 🍷
