History Of Hospital Filling Station

Hospital Filling Station is essentially the oldest filling station in Bethlehem. Sister Hunger opened the pumps of Hospital Filling Station in 1927, she had no idea that 90 years later that it would still be operational.

Tragedy struck in 1963 when her son Dudley passed away in a car accident, She then decided to sell the business. It was at this pivotal moment, when Mrs. Jo Pretorius stopped at Hospital Filling Station to fill up, on her way to Durban from Bloemfontein. Hospital Filling Station was then sold and the Pretorius’s arrived in Bethlehem in the spring of 1963.

Hospital Filling Station is very much a family affair. Butch Pretorius took over from his grandmother in 1986 and has been in the driving seat ever since.

Butch Pretorius married Ria in 1988 who was a math’s teacher at Witterberg High school at the time.
