Here's a great wine recommendation... Wolf & Woman 2022

Jolandie Fouché’s approach to wine making is fresh and immediately instils confidence, with her determination to produce wine that reflects her Swartland origins in a style "that I like to drink myself". She has people lining up for both her Chenin Blanc and this elegant Grenache Noir rosé. Inspiration for the name came from poet Clarissa Pinkola Estés: "Sometimes I am more wolf than woman, and I'm still learning how to stop apologising for my wild".

Provençal in style with a Swartland edge, this rosé has fresh subtle fruit flavours like pomegranate, honeydew melon and berries with a mineral core. Crisp and endlessly flavoursome. Pairs well with light summer salads, sushi and grilled calamari.

Our wine of the week is Hermanuspietersfontein Wines Kleinboet 2019

Although quite the lad, he’s not too big for his boots...
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot varietals are blended together and then aged as a blend for 24 months in 6000ltr French oak foudre, resulting in a wine that displays a deep red hue. Aromas of black currant, lavender, black olive and fynbos persist. The palate is rich with fruit such as raspberries and blueberries with savoury notes of cloves. Fine, powdery tannins finish the wine with great balance. Pair with Karoo lamb, a delicious home-made beef burger with grilled cheddar topping or mushroom risotto.

Today is "The Day of The Dead". Amoungst our unique range of skeleton and skull tequila, is the Kah Anejo Tequila (Black Skull) is made from 100% blue agave and is aged in American Oak casks for at least 12 Months. The black bottle design is inspired by the Nicaraguan tradition of The Day of the Dead. In Nicaragua, in addition to the standard traditions of building a shrine and gift-giving, many people linger and sleep in the graveyard. They believe that this act re-enforces the emotional connection between them and the deceased. The Gooseberry Bush Sauvignon Blanc has tropical guava, coriander and ripe tones of passion fruit flavours on the palate. On the nose there are hints of gooseberry. This wine is a delicate crisp and dry fruitful wine in the “new world” style. The upfront acids add a refreshing dimension that carry through well into a long tangy finish. She explored the farms, experienced first hand how the wine is made, met the wine makers and of course, drink wine - all of which has helped better equip Valenica to serve her customers at TOPS with great recommendations for all palates no matter the occasion or preference!

Our featured wine farm of the week is Diemersfontein Wines Farm

The Diemersfontein range of wines encapsulates the magnificence,

It's Pinotage Day and Beyerskloof is the brand which has become synonymous with Pinotage 🍷

It was ‘born’ when Beyers Truter planted the first vineyard at the small home farm off the Koelenhof road in Stellenbosch, bought in 1988. 1995 was the inaugural vintage of the much-loved Pinotage and in 1996 it won the first of many Top Ten awards. 2018 saw Beyerskloof win the Trophy for the best Pinotage at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. This award-winning tradition has continued to this day, under the guidance of winemaker Abrie Truter.

This week we're raising a glass of Pongrácz MCC bubbly...

Our wine farm of the week is Anura Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Positioned on the foothills on the Simonsberg Mountains, Anura Vineyards aim to produce handcrafted wines for individuals who are looking for something unique and distinctive, combining the robust fruit of the New World with the elegance and complexity of Old-World winemaking styles. Their Sauvignon Blanc features mineral, grassy, green fig tones combined with pineapple, lemon, and granadilla, grapefruit flavours. This wine has a fresh, crispy acidity, which is supported by well-rounded juicy, refreshing palate. Pairs beautifully with canapes, salads, seafood, poultry, sushi and fresh fruits.

All their spirits are distilled in small batches and individually bottled and labelled in the true craft philosophy. All the botanicals are sourced close to home and local suppliers are supported wherever possible.

Our Store Manager, Avinash Nundkisun, enjoys drinking beer when he is off duty, often discovering a new and interesting craft beer. He is loving the different styles, aromas, hues and flavour profiles of the huge range of craft beer we stock in our massive beer fridge and beer experiential room. He is also embracing the gin revolution and experimenting with different gin based cocktails.

Avi commenced his career with The Dolphin Coast Retailers (DCR) Group at the Tops at Stanger in 1998, whilst still studying towards a Bcom degree. He worked in many departments within the SPAR supermarket environment and then returned to head up the DCR liquor portfolio. He is passionate about working with people, learning from others and ultimately creating a holistic liquor experience for our customers.

Avi is super proud to be part of the newly revamped and the way that the store complements and adds value to the atmosphere, vibe and diversity of Lifestyle Centre Ballito. He can't wait to welcome you all back when we are able to reopen!
