Established in 2000 and located in the Polkadraai Hills of the striking Stellenbosch winelands, Raats Family Winery has been instrumental in discovering areas were Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc are best suited, identifying specific soil types that influence the variety and nurturing vineyards, both old and young, with the utmost attention to detail, to produce outstanding wines that have received consistent local and international accolades.

This wine has a distinctive yellow apple, kiwi fruit and pineapple core, alongside notes of green melon and limes. The wine is thus bursting with fresh fruit and a zesty citrus linger on the palate, with a long mineral finish. Drinks exceptionally well now and will benefit from cellaring for another 3 – 5 years. Pairs beautifully with mild curry dishes, sushi or oysters.

To master the Tangram, a Chinese geometrical seven-piece puzzle, one has to look at the whole puzzle to understand and form the myriad of images to be shaped. The winemaking team has woven intricate elements into The Tangram wines to build true masterpieces to be savoured and treasured. This wine is a rich, full, concentrated blend of 88% Sauvignon Blanc and 12% Semillon, with flavours of citrus, spice, grapefruit and a nutty and lemon wax finish. This wine was rested in French oak barrels for 10 months and is an expression of an illustrious cool climate wine.

Eamonn's Selection is the Thelema Grenache 2022. This wine presents a bright ruby red colour in the glass. On the nose, it offers inviting aromas of ripe red berries, subtle spice, and a hint of floral notes. The palate is juicy with flavours of cherry, raspberry, and a touch of white pepper. It has a smooth, medium body with balanced acidity and gentle tannins, leading to a clean, refreshing finish.

Think roast turkey with lots of root vegetables or pork belly. Slow-cooked stews and braises can be a great pairing.

Our wine of the week is Thelema The Mint Cabernet Sauvignon.

Thelema Mountain Vineyards, situated on the spectacular Helshoogte Pass,
where the high altitude and rich red soils are ideal for premium quality wine grape production, is a family- owned and managed wine estate. The source of the “mint” character in this wine is attributed to the airborne transfer from the Eucalyptus trees, which border this specific Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard, to the grape berries. Ripe red berry, cassis and dark chocolate flavours are complimented by hints of mint and on the palate. The wine has fine tannins with a long, mocha finish. Roast Lamb is a classic choice to accompany this wine!
