The Vermouth of Turin® Week is occurring now from June 23 to 30 and the only reason we are aware is from the WineCompass.com post 9 di DANTE, Inferno, Purgatorio, and Vermouth di Torino Superiore IGP (link below). The campaign is organized by the Turin Vermouth Consortium. If you are visiting Turin during this week, the bars, wine bars and restaurants participating in the initiative will be creating cocktails based on Vermouth of Turin. These recipes and photos will be published on the Consortium's social media and on the event website. In addition, cocktails will be served to the public, who will have the opportunity to get to know all the nuances of Turin's Vermouth and share the culture and passion for an excellent aperitif. Follow Vermouth di Torino and Vermouth di Torino Week for these recipes.

Who has visited a winery in Ohio? June is your chance as the Buckeye States celebrates Ohio Wine Month. The state hosts seven wine trails and over two hundred wineries, cideries, & meaderies. Wines are produced using "Heritage" grapes such as Catawba, Concord, and Niagara; hybrids such as Chambourcin, Chardonel, Vidal, Traminette, Frontenac, and Marquette; but also international vinifera varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Riesling. One of our favorites is the Firelands Winery Pinot Noir.
.
"Ohio has a long tradition of growing flavorful grapes that produce quality wines. It first began in the early 1800s when Nicholas Longworth, a pioneer in the commercial wine industry, planted Catawba grapes in Cincinnati above the Ohio River. Unlike the stronger-tasting wines of that era, Longworth’s Catawba grapes produced a semi-sweet wine that quickly won the praises of consumers. His initiatives proved so successful, that by 1859, Ohio had become the leading producer of wine, boasting more than 3,000 acres of grapes along the river between Cincinnati and Ripley, Ohio."

Last week during our Sonoma-Napa BevFluence Experience we scheduled a vineyard tour with Ivo & Luke Jeramaz to learn more about the winery's regenerative farming practices and as an added benefit sampled several library wines from their iconic portfolio. Grgich Hills Estate is a leader in this sustainable and chemical free farming method and it is reflected in the vibrant community of birds and beneficial insects thriving in their vineyard.
.
During the coming months we will feature other wineries committed to Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) farming using these five instrumental steps.
.
1) No till agriculture reduces erosion and keeps valuable nutrients and microbes in the soil.
2) Bio-diversity in the vineyard through at least four plant groups leads to sharing of nutrients.
3) Planting cover crops that become layers of armor by protecting the soil from sunlight and maintains moisture.
4) Let animals manage most vineyard activities such as mowing and pest control. Grgich Hills uses sheep, owls, songbirds, guinea fowl, and other animals to control cover crops and pests.
5) Institute labor practices that ensure sufficient wages and worker safety that leads to greater retention and thus increased productivity.

Connection Corner with Chandler and Bozal Mezcal Ensamble
.
Chandler Tomayko, Director of Bartending Lab, sips the Bozal Mezcal Ensamble. This is a light styled mezcal created by blending three different agave plants: Espadín, Mexicano, and Barril. This last agave plant is a thick-foliaged, wild agave, often used as fencing to divide land in Oaxaca, intensifies the complexity of this mezcal. The Mexicano is also a wild agave plant that thrives in the moist environment of lower elevations. And Espadin is the predominant agave used in mezcal production.

Most of our Travel Thursday posts focus on regions or countries, but sometimes a visit to a particular establishment is worthy of its own post. Veritas Vineyard & Winery is located in the Monticello AVA and can be reached using both the Monticello Wine Trail and Nelson Route 151 Trail. It is a second generation family-owned and operated vineyard & winery in Afton, Virginia that makes spectacular wine. The winery was started by Andrew and Patricia Hodson in 1999 and their daughter Emily has been the winemaker for over 15 harvests.
.
On this visit we focused on their Viognier which is usually one of the best in the state - bright stone fruit and juicy minerality. We always enjoy their different expressions of Chardonnay as well as the Petit Manseng, sparkling wine, and their Claret. A must visit for anyone visiting Monticello and Nelson County.

May is Michigan Wine Month and BevFluence has a long relationship with Michigan wineries - particularly through our 2019 Denver Experience where we tasted through the previous years Governors Cup Case Club as well as our 2020 influencer campaign with the Michigan Wine Collaborative. Both these events confirmed the outstanding quality of Michigan's cold climate grapes. Riesling is a top expression and our panels loved the Pinot - Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Grigio. Some of the descriptors referred to rustic and velvety to minerality and great acidity. Blaufrankisch is gaining in popularity and is typically showing black pepper notes upfront and a spicier pepper profile. And look for Cabernet Franc, Grüner Veltliner, and Chardonnay.

Connection Corner with Chandler and 135 East Dry Hyogo Japanese Gin
.
Chandler Tomayko, Director of Bartending Lab, sips the 135 East Dry Hyogo Japanese Gin. The gin is named after the 135° East meridian that crosses Akashi City in the Hyogo prefecture. Master Distiller & Blender Kimio Yonezawa chose to combine three traditional botanicals from Europe, together with five uniquely Japanese ones — all sourced from small local producers and the best specialists in Japan, distilled separately to preserve character and finally blended together.

May is Oregon Wine Month and Oregon is home to 23 federally recognized American Viticulture Areas (AVAs). The Willamette Valley, Oregon’s oldest wine region, has two-thirds of the state’s wineries and vineyards and is home to more than 700 wineries.
.
The Rogue Valley is a sun-drenched, fertile region comprised of three distinct valleys with progressively warmer micro-climates and the region successfully grows both cool- and warm-climate varieties so you can enjoy Rogue Valley wine with everything.
.
The Walla Walla Valley AVA straddles southeast Washington and northeast Oregon and is hemmed in by the Blue Mountains to the southeast, the Palouse to the north, and the Columbia River westward.
.
The Umpqua Valley is a result of the collision of three mountain ranges of varying age and structure: the Klamath Mountains, the Coast Range and the Cascades.
.
The last major region is the Columbia Gorge -- a place of extremes—extremes in climate, scenery, and style of wine. Let's discuss the grape varieties:
'
Pinot Noir: Most commonly found in the Willamette Valley and Southern Oregon, Pinot noir represents 59% of Oregon’s planted acres.
.
Pinot Gris: Most commonly found in the Willamette Valley and Southern Oregon, Pinot gris represents 14% of Oregon’s planted acres.
.
Chardonnay: Most commonly found in the Willamette Valley and Rogue Valley, Chardonnay represents 7% of Oregon’s planted acres.
.
Syrah: Most commonly found in the Columbia Valley, Southern Oregon, and Snake River Valley, Syrah represents 4% of Oregon’s planted acres.
.
Cabernet Sauvignon: Most commonly found in the Columbia Valley, Rogue Valley, and Snake River Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon represents 4% of Oregon’s planted acres.
.
Riesling: Most commonly found in the Willamette Valley, Columbia Valley, Rogue Valley, and Snake River Valley, Riesling represents 1% of Oregon’s planted acres.
