Yes, I changed…

Far removed from the modern world, the Bajau people of Indonesia live a life closely connected to the sea. Often called “Sea Nomads,” this remarkable community spends nearly all of their time on houseboats near the waters of Sulawesi. Unlike most people, the Bajau rarely go on land. Their daily activities—whether fishing, cooking, or even sleeping—take place entirely on water.

The Bajau have developed unique adaptations and skills that allow them to thrive in their aquatic environment. One of their most incredible abilities is deep-sea diving. Many Bajau divers can hold their breath for several minutes and dive to significant depths without using any modern diving equipment. These skills are not newly acquired but have been passed down through generations, becoming a vital part of their identity and way of life.

Their eyes are also said to adjust better underwater, and their spleens—larger than average—may help them stay submerged longer, a trait being studied by scientists. The ocean provides everything they need, from food to transport to spiritual meaning. Their strong relationship with the sea not only defines their culture but also makes them one of the most captivating and resilient maritime communities in the world.

While modernization threatens their traditional ways, the Bajau continue to hold onto their unique heritage. Their deep connection to the water, passed through family lines, highlights the beauty and diversity of human adaptability. The Bajau stand as a rare example of a society shaped entirely by the rhythm of the ocean.

Being born into difficult circumstances often felt isolating. The people around me didn’t always understand how heavy poverty could feel—how each hardship seemed to birth another, shaping every decision and weighing down every choice. I wasn’t just hungry for food, but for understanding. And often, it felt like the world didn’t care. The problems kept piling up.

What carries you through is love. Hope. The belief that maybe tomorrow will feel a little lighter. That the dreams you hold for a better life aren’t beyond reach.

For me, that hope often came through books and words. Uplifting others is, in itself, an act of love. It says, “I see you. I support you. I believe in you.” May we continue to love, by helping others rise 🤍🙏🏽

Clara Belle Drisdale Williams [1885-1993] was the valedictorian of the graduating class of Prairie New Normal and Independent College, now (Prairie View A & M University) in 1908.

She enrolled at the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in the fall of 1928, after taking some courses at the University of Chicago. While she worked as a teacher at Booker T. Washington School in Las Cruces, she also took college courses during the summer.

Many of her professors would not allow her inside the classroom, she had to take notes from the hallway; she was also not allowed to walk with her class to get her diploma.

She married Jasper Williams in 1917; their three sons became physicians. She became a great teacher of black students by day, and by night she taught their parents, former slaves, home economics.

In 1961, New Mexico State University named a street on its campus after Williams; in 2005 the building of the English department was renamed Clara Belle Williams Hall.

In 1980 Williams was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws degree by NMSU, which also apologized for the treatment she was subjected to as a student. She died at 108 years old.
