You are the first people in the United States to get to see what may go down as one of the best glass bottles I have ever seen, matched with some super delicious red wine made by winemaking superstar Nicholas Vellas.

We first saw this bottle in February of 2023, and we have been waiting to get our allotment of this wine for an entire YEAR. Finally, it has arrived and we could not be more pumped to bring it to you.

Why do we love it so much (in addition to the glass?!) - a video of the bottle can be found here.

The wine is made from Syrah and Grenache in more or less equal proportions here, and this exhibits what makes CostiĂšres de Nimes an increasingly popular and important sub-region of the Rhone Valley. It benefits from the same Mediterranean sun and breezes, and the same limestone soils, as any other southern Rhone appellation.

But here's the catch - unlike so much ChĂąteauneuf-duPape, this stuff is actually affordable!

To kick off March Madness, we'll have this on the tasting machine at all 8 stores for just $0.01 all weekend long.

TGIF y'all!

Reminder we open at 9am Thursday - Saturday!

We’ve been getting lots of deal offers lately, but every now and again we get one that has to do with a national restaurant chain not taking what they promised a winery, and then the winery has to figure out what they can do with the inventory.
Enter 2022 Alexana Terroir Series Pinot Noir.

Apparently a chain that is not to be named was not able to fill their commitment (they do have good steaks though), so we get to step in and pick up some amazing juice at a great price. It kinda feels like those cards out of Community Chest in Monopoly. "Steakhouse chain mixup - great wine coming your way"

If you’re not familiar with the story behind Alexana, it is a great one. Dr. Madaiah Revana created this estate in 2005 fulfilling an obsession with Pinot Noir. Alexana is named after his daughter and is located in the Dundee Hills appellation, 28 miles southwest of Portland. His portion of the Red Hills of Dundee is defined by ridges that run north and south, with small valleys on the east, south and west sides. Located between 360 and 640 feet above sea level, the site has eighteen soil types spread over a combination of rolling hills, steep slopes and rugged terrain. Revana Estate is 80 acres, L.I.V.E. Certified, and planted to ten clones of Pinot Noir on those eighteen different soils. Each block is vinified separately and then blended together and aged for eleven months in one-third new French oak barrels.

If this sounds like a lot of action - it is. Nearly 20 years in, the investments Dr. Revana made have really paid off. Alexana produces world class Pinot Noir and Cabernet (along with a few other things), with prices to match. So when we can drink any of their wines, especially the Pinot, for less than $30, we are all in.

No hesitation, never a doubt.

In a world where I feel like everything is starting to cost an arm and a leg, we continue to celebrate value here at winestore.

I'm not talking about just paying less for a product for the sake of paying less - I'm talking about real value. That feeling when you know you're paying less money for a high quality product and you get that ever so satisfied feeling.😁

Highland Falls at $9.99 is darn near the top of that value list for me.

It was our 2020 Wine of the Year, it sold more bottles than any other wine in 2021, and the momentum seems to only be picking up speed... (so much so the winery was out of stock for 4 months in 2022 and 3 months in 2023)

What's up with the wine?

"Mountain-grown, it’s the richest kind,” as coffee commercials used to say, but it’s also true of Cabernet. You rarely, if ever, can find mountain fruit in $12 wines. Like, I can't even think of one off the top of my head.

Foley Family's winemaking pedigree being involved doesn’t hurt either: the guys who bring you Merus, Chalone, Sebastiani and Chalk Hill Wines are behind the powerhouse Highland Falls lineup too.

It's kinda like if the people behind Dom Perignon launched a $12 sparkler - or the winemaking team behind Rombauer rolled out a $12 Cali Chardonnay.....these are the best of the best in the Cabernet world, bringing you world class value.

At this price, it still holds the red wine sales record for a 5 day stretch...and I understand why.

One of the foundations of our business model is that when we get a better price on an item, YOU get a better price on the item.

Once a year for the last two years the people at BR Cohn let us bring in a huge pop of this wine at $9.99, and it literally walks itself out the door. It's no surprise though, the wine is delicious and this is the lowest price this wine has ever been offered in the USA (that we can find).

The only real downside? We get one shot to buy in - and when it's gone we just have to wait till 2025.

This year there are 336 cases available. Last year you all bought 280 cases of this wine at $9.99 in 6 days. Just a heads up!

The Cohn family has a long history in the wine trade of Northern California (as well as a history of managing The Doobie Brothers but we must save that for another time...I'm serious). They were one of the original fruit sources for wineries like Sebastiani and Gundlach Bundschu and since 1984 they have been producing their own wines as well. Their first winemaker? Helen Turley. You read that correctly. She's like kind of a big deal right now...just like this wine!

Their Silver Label Cabernet is a staple of fine dining establishments across the country...one taste and it is easy to see why. It's rich, easy drinking and complex Cabernet at a friendly price point.

First come, first served. You guys know what to do!

Happy Wednesday!

I think it is official now, the #1 most sought after, most repeat purchased etc. out of our Holiday Advent box is Rue 37.

Of all the texts and e-mails we got regarding this wine, my favorite was from two weeks ago. (and really what got us excited to put this on sale). It simply said. "Hey, Rue 37 is soo bad a**. Please set another six pack aside."

In our running for our wine of the year last year, this wine represents everything we could ever want in a bold red wine...and on sale for $14.99 it suddenly vaults into the realm of becoming the top Rasteau value available in the US right now.

Don't believe me? Just start by trying to find a wine from Rasteau (when thinking Rasteau think Chateauneuf du Pape, Cotes du Rhone, Gigondas etc.) for less than $15...👀

Aside from sounding like Dustin Hoffman’s character in Midnight Cowboy (hey, I'm walking here!), Rasteau is one of the genuine values in red wine. More or less baby Chateauneuf, Rasteau these days mimics the blend that has evolved in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and now extends to other critical areas of the Southern Rhone: 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 5% other (in this case, Cinsault). It reflects a perceived truism of wine: if you want to create complexity in warm climates, you need additional grapes. It helps that these vines are between 30 and 50 years old, facing a most helpful southeast towards the famed Dentelles de Montmirail (the “teeth of Montmirail”, don’t you know), so they pick up all the morning sun and avoid the harsh sunlight of the late afternoon.

Old vines, low yields, perfect location? What is not to love.

A great one not to miss out on. I know what I'm drinking tonight!

Also - Vivino says the average purchase price is $49...so not sure what that is about but it makes me love this even more!

I'll start by saying this is the lowest price that this wine has ever been offered for in the United States, in any vintage, at any time.

We decided to partner with Bonterra on their remaining inventory of "The Roost" and the terms of the deal we struck with them are pretty simple. We can offer you all this crazy delicious Chardonnay at $21.99 per bottle until we run out or until 48 hours runs out - which ever hits first.

If you are into California Chardonnay, I am here to tell you that you will find not Chardonnay under $25 of this quality. I also don’t know of many single vineyard biodynamic wines under $25 - red or white. Honestly, I can’t think of one.

The 2020 Bonterra “The Roost” Chardonnay is a 100% certified biodynamic single vineyard Chardonnay from the Blue Heron Vineyard in Mendocino County, CA. Bonterra is as close to an OG among the wineries devoted to sustainability and true regenerative viticulture as any among American wineries. This single vineyard wine comes from a spot nestled between the shore of the upper Russian River and a blue heron nesting site and preserve; hence the name of Blue Heron Ranch. It’s biodynamically farmed, and shows the sort of rich and delicious cut that’s typical of Mendocino Chardonnay.

So what we have for you today is:
1) Lowest Price ever offered on this wine
2) Certified biodynamic and organic single vineyard Chardonnay for less than $25
3) 48 hours to get while the gettin' is good

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

Does Big Box mean Big Savings?

Every now and again, we feel it's appropriate to tackle the issue of wine prices. Not in the educational sense like Doug Frost does on occasion, but rather straight up store vs. store (or bottle vs bottle).

Since we opened in 2006, we've been asked on numerous occasions how our prices stack up against the "big box" retailers. Most often the store in question is Total Wine. It's a fair question as most of us just assume that a bigger store means lower prices. They constantly tell you that they offer the "lowest prices". Large retailers are supposed to wield endless amounts of buying power in order to get lower prices and squash independent retailers right?? Well, not exactly.

As we have for the last decade, we put this theory to the test by purchasing an assortment of bottles from Total Wine and comparing it to the exact same set of wines from winestore. We selected several wines for every day drinking (e.g. Meiomi and Sonoma Cutrer) and a few nicer wines for a special occasion (e.g. En Route Pinot Noir and Pine Ridge Cabernet).

The Total Wine product was purchased at Total Wine in Charlotte, NC. The winestore. product was purchased at our Southpark store in Charlotte, NC (but rest assured all our prices are the exact same at all our locations - this is not the case at Total Wine, even across NC).

The results were as follows:

11 bottles of wine from Total Wine (with tax): $351.62

11 bottles of wine from winestore. (with tax): $257.07

Savings of 27% or $94.55

Receipts can be found at the link in the Bio or below

We were not surprised, but we thought you might be. What could be better than being able to support local business and save money at the same time? What could you do with the extra 90 bucks? In the current environment, I would say quite a lot. Extra grocery money, anyone?

We want you to know we are looking out for you and your wallet - bringing you the best wine possible for the lowest prices - every single day.

As always THANK YOU for your business and we hope to see you soon!

Taste Prisoner BLIND vs $20 Rivals...

After the success of our 15th Silver Oak Blind Tasting you guys were clamoring for another blind tasting. Someone in a team meeting last week asked about the Prisoner and we realized we had NEVER done a Prisoner blind tasting before.

Well...It's go time!

"The Prisoner" Red Blend appears to be universally loved. It actually helped spawn an entire movement of "BIG" red wine blends (and kinda gave Zinfandel a re-birth of popularity if you will), and still sits atop its perch as King of the Gigantic Red Wine Kingdom :)

Which is why we're playing "Find The Prisoner" this Saturday. It's simple really. The wines will all be tasted blind on our tasting machines. One of them will be 2021 The Prisoner and the others will be an assortment of wines at every price point, from a number of different regions. All you have to do is load up your card with $8.00, taste all eight wines (you don't have to taste all 8 if you don't want to, but it's more fun if you do!), and pick your favorite. Yes, that's right, your favorite. If that's The Prisoner, then great, if not, well that's OK too. You may be surprised as to what your favorites actually are.

These events are always fun, and with this one being our first ever with The Prisoner, we can't wait to see what happens!

See you all Saturday!

Last week we met with the powers behind Bodegas Lo Nuevo in hopes of striking up some deals for you guys. They are kinda like the epic power players of Spanish wine, and they always have deals cooking.

Enter 4 pallets of Orlaida into the conversation.

They said they had 4 pallets (224 cases) of this Cabernet blend that they wanted to move out and we could do it at $9.99 per bottle if we took it all. Our decision took no less that 0.000001 seconds. Yes, please!

At $9.99 per bottle this wine represents some of the best Cabernet based values that we have ever offered.

Apparently I am not the only one that loves the 2019 Orlaida, as the Vivino iPhone App I use says it is in the top 4% of all wines in the WORLD, and that the current 2019 vintage rates better than any other vintage...so maybe I am onto something :)

You can see more here: https://buff.ly/3uylLPZ

Why do we love it?

Bodegas Lo Nuevo's success has allowed them to spread their wings to other prestigious regions. Their Montsant projects have brought them perhaps even more fame than in Jumilla. Orlaida could become a benchmark for the potential of Montsant. The vineyards for their Cabernet are at 2,000 ft. in altitude in the area of Cornudella de Montsant, with Priorat like slate soils. Cariñena vineyards in Darmós and Masrig are on clay soils, and the Syrah vines are located on limestone.

What does all that mean? Delicious, complex, and full bodied red wine that is right in my wine budget sweet spot!

So here we go - when it's out, it's out!

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

"In spite of rock and tempest's roar, in spite of false lights on the shore, sail on, nor fear to breast the sea!"
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The quote above is from the 2019 Dry Creek Mariner front label, and while it has absolutely nothing to do with how delicious this wine is, we thought it was pretty awesome and thus decided to include it in this e-mail. If you want to geek out and read the whole poem like we did, you can find it here.

Anyhoo - back to the topic at hand - Dry Creek Mariner one of the lowest prices in the USA! If still waters suggest depth, a wine of this balance and equanimity is proof that noise and intensity aren't required for richness. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec and 8% Petit Verdot, this has length and character, but it’s not ever about the high alcohol intensity typical of California’s celebrated wines.

The wine pairs well with Tuesday evenings and people who like drinking awesome red wine :) You can also watch a pretty cool video about the wine by clicking HERE.

Reminder We open at 9am Thursday - Saturday!

I anticipate today could create the single fastest selling sale item in winestore. history. No joke.

Why do I say this?

The fine folks at Foley Family Wines came to us three weeks ago with a deal. Could we move some product, at the lowest price ever offered on said product, with the sale coinciding with the end of dry January.

We were like "Yeah, of course, what is the wine...???"

They were like "How does Kingstree Proprietary Red for $12.99 per bottle sound"

👀

Needless to say this is a back up the truck, we are all in, type of situation we have now found ourselves in...

Nearly 250 ratings on Vivino with an avg. purchase price north of $25, it is almost impossible for me to tell you how pumped we are about this one.

This Cabernet blend has been a staple at our store for a long time, and at $12.99 it represents the type of value that even the pickiest wine drinker can get behind.

I'm in for a case. The record for the day is 4,000 bottles. I'm predicting it could beat that number by more than 1,000. Price is right rules.

I can't say for sure if this is the wine Taylor Swift was spotted drinking while celebrating the Chief's win last Sunday, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was...

How does a wine sell more in our store than Mer Soleil, Quilt, and other big names and it was promoted and or on sale just one time since June of 2022?

It's because this is the ultimate "If you know, you know" red wine. It also was behind one of my favorite lines from a recent Caymus blind tasting where a customer circled the number that was Pabellon and just wrote "If this isn't Caymus, I want a case..." 😁

What makes this wine so good?

The powers behind Bodegas Lo Nuevo need no introduction to our customers; we have followed them for several years now. Why? Because they have a remarkable set of vineyards in many of the sexiest parts of Spain, and because they always bring some crazy value to it.

This is a fairly new project for them, but like others they own, it consists not of a large family holding but is a collection of small plots, each planted 15 to 60 years ago. This is the most elevated region of Rioja, the Alavesa, where calcareous clay soils necessitate a reliance upon Tempranillo and where winemakers Bartolomé Abellån and Sara García rest this 100% Tempranillo in French oak for 10 months.

So here we go - on sale through Sunday.

Today we have an offering that not only benefits a good cause (V Foundation for Cancer Research), but the wine is also delicious and the deal is on point.

In 1993, when Dave Miner was President of Oakville Ranch Vineyards, Emily Miner became the Tasting Room Manager for Oakville Ranch and a few years later they married and started Miner Family Wines. The Emily’s Cab bottling is their eponymous offering in remembrance of Emily, who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2011 and a portion of the proceeds of Emily’s go to The V Foundation for Cancer Research. But the other reason to buy this wine is that Miner Family wines are just damned good. All of their wines get their fair share of acclaim but their Cabernets are next level; it helps to source grapes from Stagecoach Vineyard, Bonny’s Vineyard (where Silver Oak came to fame) or the legendary Volker-Eisele Vineyard.

We have a very limited amount of wine left at this price, so let's keep it short and sweet today, shall we?

You guys know what to do! TGIF!

In the last 3 years we have sent out only 3 newsletters mentioning Austin Hope "Austin", and that may be all they need. Just based on those 3 mentions you all have purchased over 40,000 bottles of this stuff. 👀

Like what is going on here?

Austin Hope, makers of the eponymous Austin Hope line of wines, as well as Treana, Liberty School, Quest, and a few others, released a few years ago an "entry" level Cabernet that is downright insane for the money.

Austin Hope’s family started farming grapes and wine in Paso Robles more than 30 years ago. While they planted apples, they were quick to realize that grapes could prosper as well; few did in 1978. Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Zinfandel, has long been their lodestar, and the power of Paso Robles Cabernet is now a benchmark for California wine. It also doesn't hurt that one of Austin Hope's mentors was Chuck Wagner (of Caymus fame).

The Hope family used to sell grapes to Caymus, and many have opined that the Austin Hope line of wines are eerily similar to Caymus in style, at a fraction of the cost. We will let you all decide if they taste as good!

So this may be a "if you know, you know" type of wine...and now we all know.

The hype behind our #1 selling Sauvignon Blanc in 2021 and 2022 finally caught up with the inventory at the winery, and this wine has been out of stock since January of 2023 👀.

So to celebrate the return of Cape Charles Sauvignon Blanc (this time from France!), we're putting it on sale all weekend and letting the good times roll.

What makes this wine so great?

The gang behind Valkyrie has pretty much carved a space out for themselves; their California efforts have fueled their successes beyond their humble start-up and now, after killing it with the AVERÆN project in Oregon, they’re hard at work in other parts of the globe.

Their first Cape Charles Sauvignon Blanc hailed from some vineyards in Walla Walla Valley, and now they've turned to Gascony to use its embarrassment of riches in this delicious treat.

Gascony is foie gras, delicious plums and apricots, rich dinners with Armagnac to follow. But the white grapes grown here are not just for great brandy, they have always been consumed as wine too and the last decade or so has seen an embrace of clean, cold winemaking to preserve the aromas of otherwise neutral grapes like Ugni Blanc or F***e Blanche. It’s also seen new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, a grape that requires no heroic measures to reveal its aromatic riches. What’s fun here is that these same winemaking methods generate something bright, dry and vibrant - needing only an ice bucket and a big glass for full enjoyment.

If this wine was your jam (and based on sales of it only being back in stock for 5 days that is a lot of people), then your boat has come in!

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

With all of the talk in the media over the last year regarding AI, I thought it would be fun to ask ChatGPT to write up something on what is one of my favorite value Italian wines.

Below is what the computer had to say.

"G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso, a true masterpiece from Italy's Langhe region in Piedmont, is a red wine that encapsulates the region's essence. Its deep ruby-red color beckons with a captivating aroma of ripe red and black fruits, intertwined with delicate notes of wildflowers, truffles, and spice. With each sip, this wine reveals its velvety texture and balanced tannins, offering a symphony of fruit and earthy flavors, enhanced by a subtle minerality. G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso is not only a sensory delight but also an incredibly versatile wine that pairs gracefully with a variety of dishes, making it a true representation of Langhe's winemaking heritage and contemporary excellence."

Not exactly my style, but not bad!

The thing I love most about this wine is that is takes what is usually a tough grape to enjoy young (Nebbiolo), sprinkles in some Barbera and Dolcetto, and makes a value wine that kinda sings on the palate. I love a wine that will pair well with food, but also just drinks well if I want a glass of wine to go with the new season of True Detective (starting it tonight!)

So if Italian value is your thing, and you've never given this a whirl, it is for sure a do not miss.

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

This is a wine that we tasted in February last year, absolutely fell in love with it, and due to demand it only just showed up in December!

I am here to tell you, this is the best white wine you've never tasted. Hands down, no question about it, it is going to rock your world.

The real question is, what is going on here?!?

Well.........

Lionel Gosseaume, the son and grandson of winegrowers, grew up in his family’s vineyard, but moved away. In 2007 he decided to return but needed some vines of his own. So he bought some from a family friend, and Jean-Claude (the friend) still lives and works on the property today, because he knows those vines better than anyone.

This sweet little vineyard is located in the Loire Valley, halfway between the famous mansions, Chateau Chambord and Chateau Chenonceaux (the kind of Chateaux you see in movies). Most of the vines are a quarter-century old, on clay and silt soils, locally called “sables de Sologne”; Sologne used to be Louis XIII’s hunting grounds, but Sauvignon Blanc is more planted in the region than hunting blinds today.

The Sauvignon Blanc here is complex, crisp, dry and aromatic. It has all the hallmark qualities people look for in more expensive Sauvignon Blanc (hello Sancerre?), at a fraction of the price.

So say hello to your new house white wine for 2024!

I know what I'm drinking tonight!

The Story Behind: winestore.

When we started this concept over a decade ago, we didn’t want to merely trod down a path where someone else had cut away the brush. Our real goal was to create a wine store that was friendly to everyone, not just the usual Napa Cab buyers (not that there’s anything wrong with that, as Seinfeld used to say). We looked at how could we brighten up the stores, make them easy to walk through, and allow people to even taste the wines before they bought them. That all seemed so obvious at the time, yet it wasn’t happening as far as we could tell.

So we set to work. We were able to find people who loved wine but understood the bigger issue – that it’s not what the wine retailer loves that matters; it’s what the customer loves. Heck, we all have different palates, that’s why we like different wines! The job of a great retailer is to make sure to understand the customer’s preference first and then find the very best version of that style and type of wine that he or she can. That’s the whole reason we trademarked the phrase “You’re the expert”.

Price came into it as well (we are retailers after all!). We continue to believe to our core that you shouldn’t have to spend thirty or fifty dollars or whatever to get a really good bottle of wine. The wine world is far too diverse and interesting today for that to be necessary. So we keep hitting the tastings and visiting places in Spain, Argentina, New Zealand, Italy, Washington State, wherever, to find wines that perform well above their price. We also stand by our everyday guarantee to you; everything we sell will be priced at the lowest retail price in North Carolina
and on many things we are going to offer you the lowest price in the United States. That’s just how we roll. We want to look out for your pocketbook the same way we would look out for our own.

Now, over a decade later, we seem to have found our customers and they’ve found us. It’s on us to keep listening to the people who walk in our doors, finding out what they like (rather than selling them the next shiny object), and bringing it to them at the best possible price. Maybe we’ll soon be able to celebrate our twentieth anniversary if we can stay focused on that.
