To stave off loneliness, make real-life connections within your community. You could find a fitness class, volunteer, attend and/or join a church, or start a book club, etc. Exercise regularly; it helps produce feel-good hormones and improves physical and mental health, as well as providing opportunity for social connections. Practice self-care; pay attention to your well-being and spend time in activities that help you feel less lonely. Seek out counseling; a mental health professional can help you figure out why you feel lonely and assist you in finding long-term solutions to address it.

Greens & Cognitive Decline

Eating leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, collards and lettuce, may slow the rate of cognitive decline in seniors, according to a new study. The study followed 960 older adults, average age 81, for 5 years. Researchers focused on the amount of these vegetables needed to be protective against cognitive decline. When they compared the highest daily consumption (1.3 servings per day) to the lowest (.09 servings per day), researchers found that the rate of cognitive decline for those who ate the most was equivalent to someone 11 years younger, compared to those who ate the least. Adding one serving of leafy greens per day may stave off cognitive decline.

February Is Heart Month

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. As do men, women may experience pain, tightness or discomfort in the chest during a heart attack. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, pain in one or both arms, cold sweats, feeling lightheaded, back or jaw pain, and unexplained fatigue or weakness. For some women, symptoms may be present a month or so before their actual heart attack. If you experience symptoms of a heart attack, call 911 immediately!
