Back in Texas for a visit to another AVA after exploring the Texas High Plains: the Texas Hill Country. Antoinette’s visit was driven by a practical session on pruning, pre-harvest grape sensory assessment, and chemical analysis in the Viticulture Program at Texas Tech in Fredericksburg.

Antoinette discovered that the Hill Country’s terroir features limestone and granite soils, shaped millions of years ago when the area was submerged under a shallow sea. The unique soil composition and local climate create ideal conditions for various grape varietals.

Texas wine is not widely distributed however we do carry what is available, predominantly McPherson Cellars.

Huge thanks to the Russian River Valley Winegrowers for organizing this week’s informative and inspiring Pinot Noir Forum. It was an excellent deep dive into the world of Pinot Noir with 20 brilliant and passionate winemakers as our guides.

The event was packed with small group seminars that covered every aspect of wine production. We explored the intricacies of viticulture in the region’s unique neighborhoods, from Middle Reach to Sebastopol Hills. The oenology discussions were fascinating, lending insights into the artistry behind crafting these exceptional wines.

Cheers to the talented viticulturists, winemakers, and trade people from the Russian River Valley making these beautiful Pinot Noirs available to the DC marketplace and beyond.

Cork & Fork had the privilege of attending VieVinum 2024, the largest showcase of Austrian wine and a premier wine trade fair in Vienna. We deepened our knowledge of Austria’s wines and engaged with the passionate winemakers behind them.

The event provided a platform to taste an exceptional range of wines from diverse producers, with a highlight being the moderated tastings led by renowned experts. Our visit to the Sekt Austria bar in the foyer allowed us to savor some of Austria’s finest sparkling wines, adding to our experience.

Organized by the Austrian Wine Marketing Board (AWMB), VieVinum focused on strengthening international business relationships for Austria’s winegrowers. With a gathering of over 1,000 producers, merchants, sommeliers, and wine journalists from around the globe, it presented a valuable opportunity to expand our network and unearth new Austrian wine treasures for our store and wine club.

This experience was truly unforgettable and has enriched our understanding of the Austrian wine industry.
