Did you know that millions of years ago Florida used to be home to an armadillo like mammal the size of a Volkswagen car?! 🤯😱

Glyptodons were heavily armored mammals featuring a massive shell of interlocking osteoderms and a spiked tail for defense.

Here we see just a small scute section which gives us an idea of what that armored shell looked like 10,000-3 million years ago.

Happy fossil Friday everyone we hope you had a great holiday.

This weeks spotlight goes to the Woolly Rhinoceros. 🦏 ❄️ Here we have a jaw segment and several molars.

This ice age species lived 200,000 to 10,000 years ago and is most closely related to the modern day rhino. Its most notable difference being its thick dense coat used for warmth & protection.

Woolly rhinos were typically 9.8–12.5 ft long and 4,000–6,000 lbs. However despite their size and impressive appearance fossils show wooly rhinoceroses were hunted by large cats and human hunters.

Meg Monday has gotten a little wonky this week 🥴 Let’s talk teeth! What is a pathological shark tooth and what causes this unique appearance?

Characteristics such as the development of an abnormality, mutation, or distortion of the blade or a disfigured crown can all be considered pathological traits. Pathological teeth can appear wavy, have a split tip, have multiple tips, or even have folds. 🤯

All of the following can effect the development of a pathological tooth such as;

Genetic mutations
Injuries
Nutritional deficiencies
Disease
Damaged or immature teeth

There’s a new baby shark in Venice, FL! 🥹🦈 Brittanie’s son, Thomas, was born on December 6th, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about this little blessing! We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting his arrival, just like we have.

Brittanie is currently on maternity leave and won’t be at either shop for a while. But don’t worry—our fantastic staff is still here to provide wire wrapping services and fossil identification.

We’re so in love with our future fossil hunter! 🩵

Happy Fossil Friday! What do all these colorful Megalodon teeth have in common?

They were all found locally here in Venice Florida.

The color variation between these teeth is a direct result of the various sedimentary material that surrounded the teeth as they fossilized. Different types of sediment will produce different colors in the fossilized teeth we see today! 🦈🦷

A very unique Meg for 🤩 This megalodon tooth is entrapped in its original limestone matrix. A fossil in matrix is a fossil surrounded by natural rock, or matrix. The matrix is made up of the sediments that originally buried the fossil and over time transformed into rock!
