June 6, 1833: Felix Dominy (1800-1868) was hired to cover the dome of the Montauk Point Lighthouse lantern with copper. His work cost $230. Dominy was permitted to keep the old copper he removed from the dome.

June 4, 1912: The menhaden fishing steamer, George Curtis, out of Greenport, grounded about two miles southwest of Montauk Point Lighthouse in dense fog and became a total wreck. The captain claimed the ship’s compass was malfunctioning at the time of the incident. The captain of the Ditch Plains Life Saving Station, Carl Hedges, along with his wife and son, and a visitor assisted in setting up the breeches buoy to retrieve the crew, only to spot a second fishing vessel pull up and remove the crew. The ship was taken to New London for repairs about two weeks later.
