Improve and Protect: two words that have risen to the top as to what I’ve learned about owning an authentic old building and business in a tiny outpost that grows in popularity every year. Ive had the luck of discovering Twin Lakes, owning land, building a house, and buying a business from 1994 to 2004 to 2014 to 2024. Essentially the core village is the same old quarky, authentic, blemishes-yet-strong, beautiful-yet-always-needs-paint/repair. Yet the main 2 differences I see are literally millions of visitors during this time who LOVE this village and the business’ here and in the valley because IT IS quarky and authentic sitting in one of the most beautiful spots in the American West. Also different are the many new residents and business owners, each realizing there are few places like this, and who want to keep it the same yet knowing some growth is and will happen but they too want to improve and protect their slice of the area so it doesn’t change to the point of being like so many other Mountain valleys around us. As the summer begins to let go, sunrise this morning gave me a feeling of gratitude for being so lucky and a reminder to do my part by keeping this store strong in business health, keep looking for new ideas to meet the needs of the growing visitor counts, and keep this place the way it is for those coming in 2034, 2044, 2054, and the almost 200 year mark of 2064. Come on in this summer and fall!

7 year anniversary for this labor of love. (This is a bit long…but a good summer read.) Just one of many owners and care takers of this hallowed ground and store for more than a century, beloved by generations of residents and visitors. When my son was two years old, (23 years ago) we sat on the steps eating ice cream. Like us, so many love an old general store, it and the Inn have been the cornerstones of this community, thru good times and bad, and will be in the future. For me, i moved here from cities and corporate life years ago to live in this tiny hamlet, an outpost really. What drew me to Twin Lakes was the simplicity, the peace, the beauty. But more amazing was the warm embrace and support of the community who loved that a local was buying the store and the relationships and ease of working together with the other business owners here and learning from the amazing small business owners of Leadville and Buena Vista. Today, many new businesses share our little unincorporated village, and a new generation of business owners are opening up unique and fun coffee shops, farm store, food trucks, water sports and bicycle rental, cabins, galleries, etc. each becoming just as beloved as this old store for generations of visitors to come. Im proud to know that If my parents and grandparents could have seen this store, they would have loved it as much as I… and would jump in to stock!!

14er season is ON! And your climbing basecamp of Twin Lakes is here to fuel you with books, info, maps, stickers, shirts, hats, water, hydration, gear…. Oh and did we mention FOOD TRUCKS and COFFEE SHOPS!!! Twin Lakes is at the base of Elbert and in the center of the Sawatch Range and a ton of 14ers and 13ers are within an hours drive. Come on down, when you come on down!

We remain open and the Village continues safe and open! Thankyou everyone who has expressed concern and offered help during the ongoing Interlaken Fire. All businesses in Twin Lakes are open normal hours except the water sports rentals as the Lake is closed to recreation while aircraft are fighting the fire. (They can still rent for Turquoise Lake)

Open for the season tomorrow. Fresh coat of paint, awesome new mug and tons of cool stuff this year…. But… it will be an ugly soft open till sunday, so dont trip over boxes we are still stocking from! New shirts and hats, albums etc will be out by sunday. 7 days a week full throttle till October 15, then 5 days a week till pass closes.

Sooo, its not unusual for early May snow and its welcome for the forest etc….but we are ready for the summer lets just say. … this will delay spring outside repairs so no “ugly open” this weekend and just 9-2 mothers day. Otherwise May 23 an hour before the pass opens at noon.
