Nicholas Ray’s grand-niece just bought ‘Nicholas Ray: An American Journey’ at the store. Nicholas Ray was one of America’s most distinctive film directors in the 1950s. Films such as “They Live By Night”, “In a Lonely Place”, “Johnny Guitar” and “Bigger Than Life” reveal the psychic ills of that decade, and Ray’s brooding pessimism and rebellious individualism reached their peak in his most famous film, “Rebel Without a Cause”. All readers are welcome—ebooks, audiobooks, textbooks, comic books... Liberated from the orthodoxy of traditional book clubs, you can bring whatever you’d like to read and chat about anything, before and after the 11AM/12PM reading time.

Bring your current book or choose one from our shelves. If you enjoy it during the reading time, you can either purchase it or return it to the shelves!

We will provide coffee and wine. will bake fresh NY-style bagels!!!

The event is free. Friends and strangers are invited to gather. Our goal is creating a space where we can connect with like-minded individuals, even if all that we have in common is a love of reading.

29 Palms is Formidable! Desert Hardware on Adobe Road (my favourite store in town) went through a major revamping but hasn’t lost the charm of a small-town hardware store. This is a local, family-owned hardware store and the oldest running business in Twentynine Palms (71 years old!!). Janet Kodish, the owner, talks about what’s new within the 2,500 more square feet of retail space. Congratulations!!!

The 2003 GRAMFEST and the ROCKIN’ FOR JOSHUA TREE 2000 CONCERT ( launched by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer ERIC BURDON to raise funds to support the decades-long battle to stop a dump project proposed next to the JTNP.) The posters are printed by long-time Joshua Tree-based fine art screen printer David Fick (Idavid Graficks).

“Desert solitaire” by Edouard Abbey. The book is Abbey's account of his time as a park ranger in Arches National Monument in Southeastern Utah, in the late 50s, some time before paved access roads were built. If you have any interest in saving your planet or your heritage then this book will interest you. If you have any interest in the history of forgotten people especially Native Americans, this will interest you. If you like a good true adventure story, this will interest you. The book is recognised as an iconic work fo nature writing and a staple of early environmentalist.

The California Desert by Edmond Jaeger
First published in 1933, the book includes chapter on weather, insects, reptiles & amphibians, birds, mammals, plants and the California desert native Americans. Dr. Edmund Jaeger was a biologist known for his work on desert landscape and ecology. He spent over 60 years exploring the California deserts, including the Joshua Tree National park.
