A couple of nights ago, dad was talking about his father, S.W. Sr, and his first store. This is what I can remember...Stone's Grocery was on East Lincoln Street near South Roosevelt street from 1939 to about 1944. At that time South Roosevelt street was a main road into and out of Camp Forrest. Dad said that the store was open from 5AM until about 2AM. I asked why did they close for those three hours. He said they had to close to get the mud washed out of the isles. Dad also said in those days there was a small grocery store about every two or three blocks in Tullahoma. And with the large number of people at Camp Forrest, all the stores did well. According to dad, S.W. Sr. sold that store and opened another in Manchester, close to the current location of Spring Street Market. A year of so after opening that store, Spring Street market opened. It was one of the first supermarkets in the area. S. W. Sr. sold that store and opened up one on Highway 41, close to Murfreesboro.

S.W. still talks about this day in 1988. Steve Ennis and John Bell brought this group of Coca-Cola executives to the Minit Saver to see a small format store. They were very friendly, and asked alot of questions. They took pictures of every inch of the store, inside and out. Dad says somewhere in Japan today, there are a thousand Minit Saver Markets.

When crazy and tragic things happenned in the world, the Minit Saver was a great place to stop for a few minutes, and try to process what had happenned. FB has in a lot of ways fills that void and gives us all a place to think out loud. Still, I miss places like that.

Congratulations Pat Wright!! Minit Saver Employee of the Month for August 2012. ( time is fluid on fb! ) Pat could probably explain three and four dimensional time better than anybody I know. A really bright guy, strong family man, and another great employee in the 70's.

358, that's alot of fans! I want to do something nice for #400, and a few of our current fans too...here is the plan. # 400 gets their choice of a signed by SW Stone, 8x10 photo from any album. The same prize for four randomly picked current fans. The four random picks will be made by each of the four Stone grandchildren. They will give me a number, and I'll find that fan on the list and contact them. Sound good?? On to 400 !!

June and July...Time to buy some Watermelons and stack them out on the sidewalk !! OK a watermelon story... and there are several to pick from...In about 1980, the Stones were in Panama City Beach Florida for a family vacation. Part of the fun was a trip to Ebro, to watch the greyhounds run. Well, SW who is a skilled race dog picker, and a little lucky, bet the noon trifecta, and picked them 1-2-3. It paid big, and on the way home a day or so later, instead of being broke, we had some money. We never made it to Tullahoma with the money, he stopped in Birmingham at the Farmer's Market. After an our or so of serious bartering, he bought a semi truck load of watermelons. The truck arrived at the store about midnight the same day, and we all called friends, and went to the mall and rounded up people to help unload them. I remember we paid $1 each and sold them for $2.99, which was still less than anywhere else in town. That same year, he also had me sit at the alley between the old post office and Tullahoma Hardware with a load of watermelons on the old green truck. The price there was $2. Every time the light changed, windows would roll down and I'd sell three or four watermelons. Somebody would say...$2 ?? your daddy is selling them for $3 !

Congratulations.......Billy Rymer! May, 2012 Minit Saver Employee of the Month ! Billy worked during the 70's and still lives in the area. He is a devoted family man, and has managed to keep his sense of humor, and his many close friends throughout the years.

Another sad day...Mr. Jimmy Smith, The Candy man, passed away this afternoon. He was a hard working, good man, and a friend to every small retail store he ever served. I will post visitation and funeral arrangements asap.
