Michigan wine is seriously underrated — so let’s fix that. 🍷💡 This state has a thriving wine scene thanks to its Great Lakes climate and diverse grape varieties. Here’s what you need to know:

Fast Facts:

📍 3,605 acres of vineyards, growing 50+ grape varieties
🍇 Riesling is the top grape, followed by Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc
🏅 Michigan has 5 AVAs (American Viticultural Areas), each with its own style

Where the Magic Happens:

- Old Mission Peninsula AVA – A narrow, 19-mile stretch with a long growing season, making it perfect for Riesling and Pinot Noir
- Leelanau Peninsula AVA – Home to 25+ wineries, this area’s well-drained soils make for bright, fresh wines
- Lake Michigan Shore AVA – The oldest winemaking region, producing everything from Merlot to Carménère
- Fennville AVA – Small but mighty, known for high-quality, artisanal wines
- Tip of the Mitt AVA – The newest AVA, bringing crisp, aromatic whites and fruit-forward reds to the table

Not yet y'all...it's pruning time. We will redo this pic in about 4 weeks? Can we please warm up a bit? April has me a bit impatient every year...It seems to always be the standard 400 days long. This year it seems every second is 60 seconds...For the plants and the farm it is the same old, same old...right now they are gearing up to bust out of their buds towards the sun. Pruning is a mandatory step for the vineyard to ensure good development for the fruit in the months to come...

The wine I always wanted to make….You see we, in the Traverse City area, benefit from the warmth coming off that ‘Great’ Lake Michigan…it lengthens our growing season and helps us avoid frost and freeze. That being said, when I sought out property to plant a vineyard, I looked at two wonderfully situated peninsulas: Leelanau and Old Mission. In my absolutely humble opinion, I thought, based upon the specific microclimate, both spots could produce world class Traditional Method sparkling wine. I landed on Old Mission Peninsula and the rest is history…and for the record, both peninsulas DO produce world class sparkling wine…
